🥳Wow, there are SO many birthdays right now and lots of new baby gifts heading out the door. When we had our first child, our favourite gift was always food. Where we lived in London at the time, there was a supermarket nearby and everyone that visited us would get off at the bus stop and pick up a cake from the shop. It's Meet the Maker March and I wanted to take the time to get you acquainted with these three gorgeous people! Heavenly Harriet, Super Sue and Bean Daddy. We are so grateful to have such a wonderful team of core staff in the bakery, creating the most delicious treats for your eating pleasure. When people compare our products to that of a supermarket, it breaks my heart a little. Everything you see is handcrafted even down to the thousands of oranges and lemons zested and juiced. It's impossible to compare the work of human hands, to that of machinery and the quality proves it. Their hard work, creative genius and vision, paired with our locally sourced, high quality ingredients speaks volumes and we are so proud of this. Over the years we've been encouraged to automate processes and find shortcuts, but you don't have the control and quality of ingredients. Luxury handcrafted cakes and bakes are what we do and we're sticking to that! 💓OMG I just found this from the vault. 10 years ago... Can you believe it? We were in Thailand and without a care in the world. Waiting for our traditional Thai breakfast on the beach at Koh Samui. Coming from a large family of January babies, I feel obliged to tell you the truth: 🤣 YOU maybe on a diet because it's the new year, but we are already depressed enough that nobody wants to go out in January and it's our birthday, so we are eating all the cake and then some- this goes the same for those that drink alcohol. Dry January relates to different kinds of wine in our book. 🤣 We know when you re-gift unwanted Christmas presents because you forgot our birthday- all January babies have a story to tell here 🤣 Please don't give us gift vouchers... all the stuff in the shops are end of line thingys in January. Bizarre colours/ combinations and odd sizes. Perhaps this is how Bean Daddy and I ended up with such a flamboyant way of dressing... The list goes on, but if you have January birthdays in your family/ friendship group, ACT NOW... Don't forget them. I actually start buying our son's birthday presents in the autumn so I avoid the curse. January birthday people- stand and be counted. Tag yourself and tell me your January birthday nightmares. 2023 WOW, WHAT A YEAR! It's completely incredible when we look back at 2023 and all that's happened this year. 🥳 Winning the Barclaycard Payments Business Boost Award 🥳 Having a pitch at @latitudefest (an absolute dream come true) 🥳 Speaking at the Womenta event in early September 🥳 Compéring the main stage at Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival and seeing all of our lovely customers and friends there 🥳 Hiring another Baker (woah Mama) 🥳 Buying our first van I will never forget how special it was to see so many of our day one customers pop by at Latitude Festival. It was like something out of a dream. We have really pushed ourselves to the limit this year with everything we've done and we're so thankful to everyone that's supported us along the way from our family and friends, to our wholesale customers and of course you! Our business is a family business through and through. Almost every single member of our immediate family has helped us out at some point this year. Super Sue has been absolutely incredible this year and has risen to every single challenge thrown her way. Not only is she so proactive, she does it with a smile and magically presents you with a cup of tea at the same time. She is the beating heart of everything we do and we love her so much! Harriet (our new Baker) has fitted in perfectly too. Such a wonderful human being, a marvellous Baker and when she finally allows me to, I will show you her in person! It's Christmas Jumper Day and I couldn't let it pass by without telling you a little story... Back during lockdown, Bean Daddy and I had scheduled a Christmas photo shoot. Bean Daddy is very much "his own man" when it comes to fashion. He has a rather "eclectic" sort of style (and who am I to get in the way of creative genius). I told him to buy a Christmas jumper (expecting a 99p jobbie from eBay as it was August). NO... oh no... being the King of "Shop Small" and the champion of small business that he is, he went one better. He found a business hand knitting fair isle jumpers on an island off of the coast of Scotland (can't remember for the life of me the name, but it was remote, put it that way). Fab idea- what's not to love? HOW ABOUT THE PRICE..? The Christmas jumper in this photo cost more than my wedding dress. Can you actually believe it? I thought he was joking when he told me how much he'd spent. He prefaced it with: " it's a jumper for life... I'll wear it all the time..."- he hasn't worn it once this season. Now I'm a firm believer in buying quality items. I'm not one for the fast fashion movement, but there is most definitely a ceiling price (in my mind) when it comes to a Christmas jumper and what he spent was beyond my wildest imagination. 🚛 Something super exciting happened this week... We only went and bought our first van! Oh yes we did! It was such an emotional moment for me. Just under 5 years ago when we began this journey, owning a bakery wasn't even on our radar. It's amazing the twists and turns that life can take, but isn't that what keeps things interesting? We were absolutely terrified of venturing into cakes as we were determined to remain a brownie bakery. Luckily for us we had a guardian angel watching out for us that gave us the confidence to begin building a range. I remember our first wholesale cake delivery so well as it was also the day I started my Mini MBA at the University of Suffolk. I was absolutely sick with nerves. That one action started a whole new direction for our business and we will forever be so grateful that we were given a nudge 😇. ❤️ It's our wedding anniversary this week... 7 years! Our wedding party was so magical because we based everything around food (no surprises there)! We had all of our favourite restaurants in London create the most delicious meals, a gigantic wheel of @fenfarmdairy's Baron Bigod cheese, our bread came from a fabulous local bakery to us in Greenwich and lots of our friends baked cakes from their country (or their family favourites). We got our sparkling wine directly from a farm in Spain and there was so much food and drink, we had an impromptu cheese and bubbles party the next day at our house to get through it all! Fantastic memories for such a special day! Those of you who know the story about Bean Daddy buying a Christmas jumper that cost more than my wedding dress won't be surprised to know that his wedding shoes cost more than the Jimmy Choos I wore on the day. 🥲I get a bit weepy at this time of the year with all of the lovely boxes being sent out to university students across the UK. It may have been 25 years since I went to uni (can you actually believe it?), but I still remember it like it were yesterday. For some unknown reason, all of my parents friend's bought me spider plants and jars of Marmite as gifts. I could have opened my own botanical centre, there were so many of them (obviously they all died within a few weeks 🤭). The supply of Marmite kept me going the whole way through uni.
