Have you ever looked at another riding discipline and thought to yourself “oh hell no I’d never do that.” Whether it be jumpers, hunters, Eq, dressage, eventers…whatever. If you’re like me and you’ve done that…I am here to say… “never” is a word I’m removing from my vocabulary in this sport… During “Sitting and WITting” after my last show, I revealed that we have a new plan in my riding journey to build my fundamentals and my technical skill. And I never thought I’d be saying this…but that plan is that this jumper is now headed into…the 🥁🥁🥁 …EQUITATION RING 🥲😳😅 …and don’t get it twisted I never said “never” to the Equitation ring because I didn’t like or respect it. I have so much respect and tremendous admiration for riders dedicated to that ring. The reason that i thought “never” had everything to do with being intimated by it! It looks so difficult and intimidating and demanding and I truthfully never thought I’d have what it takes to be successful in it. But I’m seeing my gaps and where I’m falling short in my riding in the Jumper ring and because I’ve never done Hunters or the Eq, it’s time to slow it down, and force me into learning technical fundamentals that I can take back into the jumper ring when the time comes to return to that discipline. Yes I’m nervous, and I realize it’s going to take a TON of work because I am NOT a pretty rider 😅 But I want to be. I want more than anything to be better so I can stop making the same dumb mistakes and really force myself to be more accurate. Whatever it takes right? And so I’m SO EXCITED to announce that the journey in finding my new Equitation partner has begun! I cannot wait to meet the horse that will force me to focus on myself and take my riding to another level. You ever just have those lessons where you’re so in sync with your horse and everything just falls into place that it makes you so grateful to have them, and it makes you really think… Of all the horses in the world that I could have tried…our paths somehow crossed completely at random because we were both at the exact right place at the exact right time. He was in transition, I was in transition, and had we picked different dates to try horses, or a different city, had we gone two days sooner or even two days too late…we may have never met. I’ll never forget when @ramsayequine first brought him into the ring. I was walking behind him on another horse, he turned around, looked me dead in the eye, and I swear I felt my future. Whether we have challenges to overcome, or lessons that just come easily to us, this horse confirms every single ride and every single moment that he was truly meant to be mine. I didn’t start this year with a ton of confidence…and that was a disappointing feeling after ending last show season on a high. Now I can see where I fell short and I’m so grateful for the lessons. This weekend I focused solely on confidence and my relationship with Waffles. He’s been teaching me some lessons at home which I’ve now realized that he’s just asking me to be better so I can BE BETTER in the long run. This weekend taught me that if he holds my hand through every mistake…we will never grow as a team. I won’t have to. But to get to where we want to go…he’s asking more of me. And honestly, I feel pretty damn lucky to have a horse that recognizes I can be better. He’s helped me around for 3 years and now he’s showing me I HAVE to learn from my mistakes. We “stepped down” to the .85s so that we could have some solid rides and build our relationship, and I truly feel it worked. With solid, confident, clear, easy, FUN rounds, I felt that connection with him again. We were teammates again, and he let me make mistakes but he also so kindly helped me learn along the way. For that…I feel like a winner. Im not a pro, but as an amateur (that has quite a competitive side) if you have to take a step back to take a couple bigger steps forward…do it. Even though you don’t have all the normal show jitters or winning feelings…it’s a really really good feeling to just ride safely and ENJOY the crap out of your horse. In working on some top secret projects, I was recently asked “What does 'whatever it takes' look like to you?” And I realized I never really spelled it out even though it represents the name of this brand. So here it is: To me, Whatever it takes is first and foremost (and most importantly) the idea of "true horsemanship." Putting the horse and the horse's wellbeing FIRST before any ride any show...everything. It's about always remembering that pure love we just have for being around these animals. It’s about doing whatever is necessary to make sure you put your horse before the sport…even if that means competition takes a back seat. Second, "Whatever it takes" represents the horse person that wakes up thinking about horses and goes to bed thinking about horses and everything they do in between in some way directly reflects their passion for the sport. For instance, my horse and my progression in riding is always the first thing I think about when it comes to prioritizing my time, making any career changes, budgeting accordingly, and making sure Im doing everything possible to put my horse and the sport at the forefront of my life. YES I do many other things and certainly have a life outside of horses, but I consider my horse and my riding before making many of the biggest decisions in my life. When I was 25, I traded my wedding money in for a horse. The @noellefloyd x @erinlaneequestrian x @oncourseequestrian Horses and Money workshop brought me back to this time in my life and it’s a funny story I should share. My parents pulled me out of riding when I was 13. Partially because we couldn’t afford to take me to the next level and also because they felt my time was better spent focusing on high school sports. From the time I was 13-25 I had a full on identity crisis without horses and felt so out of place everywhere. I was a horse girl through and through and knew I had to do whatever it took to get back to it. By the time I was 25, I had a job in software sales and had saved up some money. It was December of 2015 and I was done waiting. I needed to get back into riding. It’s the only thing that ever made sense to me. So I started shopping and found a Hunter mare that I fell in love with on @bigeq . I had saved over half for her but it still wasn’t enough. One day, I literally woke up with a burning idea. I shot out of bed and immediately called my mom. Throughout my life, my mom mentioned money her and my dad had been saving for my wedding. So there I stood in my tiny apartment in Austin Texas in front of a Christmas tree. I asked my mom if I could use my wedding money for the rest of the money to pay for the horse I wanted. They thought I was crazy….but said yes! They assured me they wouldn’t be paying for a future wedding and I was fine with it. One week later after a trial and a vet check I bought the mare you see in this photo. Her name is Tatjana and she’s every bit of the reason I got back into this as an adult ammy. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for her and I appreciate every dollar I’ve saved, every day I dreamed, and every moment I craved horses. I appreciate my parents’ open mindedness in my dreams and my story wouldn’t be the same without it. So here’s a (really blurry) photo of the exact day I officially made Tatjana mine at 25 years old in Austin, TX December 23, 2015. This photo started the very story of WiT Equestrian and will forever remain the backbone of where it all began.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about names because as we’re coming up on my official date of ownership for Waffles, I plan to change his show name from Bordeaux back to the name he had prior to being imported. His original name was “Bo des Gars” which I have now been told means “Beautiful Damage” and its a play on words-usually spelled “Beau dégat”. I cannot wait to return to the show ring with his new/old name soon 🤞🏼 Other nicknames include (but not limited to): Big Boi, Guapos, Wafflehead. Coming to the end of my summer sunset rides… I’ll be riding under the arena lights in no time 😭
“Don’t settle.” We’ve all heard it over and over again but I never really understood it until I found Craig. Prior to him, I dated people that questioned my passions, inserted their opinions on my love of horses, the amount of money I’ve spent on them, and just…didn’t get it. I’d make excuses and say that their lack of interest was ok. I didn’t need it, but deep down it sucked that I couldn’t share my excitement of riding and horses and receive true interest and excitement back. And then Craig came along and while he was hesitant around my mare at first ( because she was giant and intimidating, and he had no horse experience) he always always tried. He’d ask to lead her, he’d ask about different aspects of the sport, he WANTED to understand it because it meant the world to me. Now, 6 years later, I can honestly say he not only cares about my horses, my passion for riding, and my competitive dreams, but he’s IN IT with me. When I knew I couldn’t afford Waffles on my own, he helped because he knew Waffles was my dream. He’s never complained about being at the barn or helping me with little barn projects here and there. Craig has never missed a show, is always the first giant smile I see when I leave the ring. High fives me after every round and let’s me chat incessantly about it over wine after. Craig texts me “have a great lesson, babe” before EVERY lesson. Never turns down any crazy idea I’ve had when it comes to getting another horse. He even baked me a freaking cake to celebrate my last show. He’s my biggest hype man and believes in me more than I do. I’m pretty positive he thinks I can jump 1.50 if I wanted to. There are countless things this man does for me just in terms of my riding and it’s taught me what “not settling” really means. The point of this isn’t to brag about my partner…I just really really want any of you who are single or with someone that doesn’t support your dreams to know you DO NOT ever need to settle. We celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary yesterday and it made me realize that my accomplishments mean SO MUCH more because of this man. I’m really good at watching my trainer ride my horse like the pro she is and then undoing literally all of her fine tuning over the course of a weekend. It’s been a hectic summer full full of work, showing, riding, reflecting, more work, rebranding, reframing, more showing, dreamy photo shoots with @elizabethhay_ , …and more work…you get it 😮💨 But it’s so good to be back and I’m so encouraged and excited by all of your kind words. I missed all things WIT, and each of you but definitely enjoyed the time to focus on other things that were demanding my attention. As I mentioned, I took the time to reflect on where I truly want WIT to go and I think I’ve come up with a pretty good plan. To summarize…more fun, less salesy, more real, more comedy, less factory driven merch, more environmentally conscious, less overproduction, more creativity, more Waffles and my personal riding life, more adult ammy, less commercialized, more partnerships/collabs, more lifestyle less brand(y) etc… I know it’s vague, but just trust when I say I’ve got some extremely exciting things coming your way soon 😘
Horses and riders were in top form last week at the @blenheimequisports Summer Classic! Papillon-K and Anni Richard navigated the CPHA Foundation Finals with grace. Both horse and rider stepped it up and produced great round for both their first time riding in a medal final. Jacque Graham started the week with a win in a big Open .90m class then stepped it up to place 3rd in the 1.00m Low Adult Jumpers and wrapped up the week with a 4th in competitive $500 Low Child/Adult Jumper Classic! Barno V and Anni Richard started the week with a win in a big open 1.00m class then took 1st in the 1.00m Low Adult Jumpers, finishing with a 3rd in the $500 Low Child/Adult Classic out of 30+ riders! Desert Rose owned by Gina Schwichtenberg put in solid rounds to place in all of her Green Hunter classes and a 2nd in the Green Hunter Under Saddle! So nice to have all the horses jumping double clear rounds all week and smooth and consistent in the hunters and equitation. He had a story. He’d never get to share it with a loving home or family, but he had a story. When @allseatedinabarn’s Tahlia texted me his picture from the direct ship pen and told me we couldn’t save him because he was under a contract that required he go to slaughter, I cried for 3 days. I was distraught and devastated over a horse I had never met and felt helpless. So I named him Brave and was determined to find a way to help him and his memory and his face live on. He’s now the face behind Project Brave Bronco and his line has helped so many other horses be rescued from the slaughter pen, get the medical care they need, and eventually find the loving home they deserve. And now…I can genuinely say nothing has done him justice or brought him to life better than this ethereal painting by @lederman.art.and.design Alex captured his spirit, conveyed his bravery and grit, and took his terrible past and gave him the heavenly aura he deserves. Brave Bronco - A Painting Origin Story ⠀ In September of 2020, @witequestrian reached out to me with a story: ⠀ — This handsome gelding was a former bronco horse used for rodeos until he injured his leg and ended up at an auction where @allseatedinabarn found him and attempted to buy his rescue. However, in order to protect the anonymity of his former owner and prevent their reputation from taking a plunge, this gelding was under a contract where he had to be slaughtered. @witequestrian has since dedicated a “Brave Bronco” collection featuring the image of this gelding on various apparel and stationary with all of the proceeds going to @allseatedinabarn ⠀ All Seated in a Barn is a horse and donkey rescue (with the occasional zebras and yaks) out of Bakersfield, California who have bought hundreds of animals from kill pens and provided whatever rehabbing, medical attention, and rehoming needed. Their goal is to not only rescue horses and donkeys from being shipped overseas for slaughter, but to also involve the community (on both local and national levels) in the rescue and rehabilitation of the animals they save. They’re refreshingly transparent about all of the day-to-day, sometimes hour-by-hour, work and care involved in maintaining the well-beings of the rescued animals, as well as the emotional toll of not being able to save them all. ⠀ ⠀ Then @witequestrian proposed an idea: — Could I design a painting of this gelding to not only tell his story, but to share his image that represents all of the equine lives lost due to contracts that prevented their opportunity of rescue. Contracts that protected the anonymity of the entities that surrendered them in horrendous conditions. Contracts that prevented any possible future of love and care, even if it’s just 5 minutes of love and kindness before humanely ending their pain. ⠀ A year and a half later, the painting of Brave Bronco is finally complete and ready to share his story.
