By my dad, captain, Billy did Cook and myself, Carrie Garcia, Harold and Pete ran a big block Chevrolet on gas with a PSI screw blower supplied by John Lee got bill in the el Maroge 200 on our club and the muroc 200 mile an hour club got me in the El Mirage and Bonneville 200 mile an hour club top speed 252 miles an hour at Bonneville and 3 miles and 229 miles an hour at El Mirage and 215 at Murach 2015. We were inducted into the drryblakes Racing Hall Fame also my dad was inducted in the Hall of Fame and 98 my mom and 99 and my grandfather in 2001. I got my 1st taste of running out on the salt in 2001 with the USFRA going for the 130 Club with friends. We were driving a 1990 Ford Mustang. I was hooked. So I built this 1979 Camaro that was given to me. Finally got it on the salt in September 2003 going for the 150 Club. I broke out by going over 170, so I decided to enter in a class the following year. At that time the record in A/CGC was 229.604. Finally got out there in 2004 and licensed up to go over 200 then Griffith Racing broke the record at 237.280 the same year. And have been going after that record since. In 2018 I was just short 1 mph to qualify. Last time I ran on the salt was 2021, Looking forward to this year. On this weeks Racers Spotlight, we have Ted Cox! In 1991 he purchased a new Dodge Stealth (same as a Mitsubishi 3000 GT) because of its streamlined body and low coefficient of drag. He modified the non-turbocharged V6 engine and added a nitrous oxide system -- and the car became a 12 second/103 MPH quarter mile sleeper! Many of the owners of fast cars Ted "blew off" Friday night grudge racing said things like, "Ted, your Stealth runs more like a V10 Dodge Viper than a V6 Stealth!" The little V6 was fast and very quick ... so he named it "JrViper". Ted has run the car three consecutive years, 2017, 18 and 19 at Bonneville. The car has been inspected and certified by SCTA tech experts each year and is approved to run at speeds over 250 mph -- by a qualified driver. It has all the required safety equipment, construction, heavy duty Wilwood disc brakes, Goodyear Landspeed tires, Stroud parachute system, etc. Ted says the car runs "straight as an arrow" at 200 plus! And on today’s Racers Spotlight we have Mark with his Z! My first trip to the salt was in 2018 and i want to thank ric knight and all the guys from the monkey business car for the invite. They have been going for years. I went down to help in pits but hafter about 10 minutes on the salt i knew i was addicted, made a call to the wife back in Washington state and gave her the bad news. The following weekend after getting home i had the motor and trans pulled from the 76 zcar that was supposed to be fixed for the wife. Im a low budget build it myself kinda guy. I had numerous folks help out along the way and made it back down in 2020 to run the 150 class so i could move over to the big course. And now, for a team, you never not see out at a Bonneville event On this week, Racer, spotlight we have the Volk bros Nish team with the 590 modified roadster ! 590 Modified Roadster Originally built in 1970 by Mike and Mel Swain. The car looked very different back then. The car moved onto it’s second owner Jerry Jones (no not the owner of the Dallas Cowboys haha) in 1972, and then onto Ken Logan and Jim Dincau in 1976. Dincua and Logan Racing made the first modifications to the car by lengthening the wheel base considerably, adding rear suspension to the car, and giving it a new fiberglass body. They ran the car together until we purchased it in 2018. Once the car became part of the Volk Brothers and Nish Racing garage. We completely stripped the car to the frame, and quickly realized that if we wanted to achieve records over 300 mph with the car we needed to rebuild the car. We were able to keep the bottom main frame rails and proceeded to build and entiry new roll cage and skeleton for the car. We also needed the car to handle better and stop the tire spin we were experiencing, so we built a 400 lb wing to help at low and high speeds. We now feel safe to run at speeds of 300mph and more. We hit 278 mph, “in the quarter” which is the first timed section of the race course, this October before kicking a rod out of the block haha. We still had 2.75 miles left in the course!!! If the motor would have held together we would have been well over 300. But it didn’t so 278 mph is the cars fastest speed to date! How about a street car? On this weeks racers spotlight we have Mike Callahan! I’m Mike Callahan from Cincinnati Ohio. My goal at Bonneville is not to set a record. My goal is to run 200mph in my street car, 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II. It all started with running the 130 and 150 clubs. In 2016 and I drove the Mercury from Ohio to the salt flats and ran 154 then in 2018 I again drove out and ran 165. On that long drive home I decided I would set the bar high and try to go 200 in my street Cyclone. The first challenge was coming up with a plan to get thru Bonneville tech and still have a real street car that I could drive every year on the Hot Rod Power Tour and Woodward Cruise. A full roll cage, door net and fire suppression system was installed. Since my car does not have a door window frame, I had polycarbonate windows made that bolt in and wind up and down. I also added an Ultra Shield containment seat with a bolt on halo so it can be removed for highway driving. I have a race and street mode with a list of things that I can add or remove. And of course I studied the rule book very close. The Mercury passed tech with no issues at 2021 WoS and 2022 & 23 at Speedweek. My car has a full interior with factory rear seat, headliner, carpet, dash, radio and parking brake. Last time I ran was in 21 WoS with top speed of 170. At that point I knew I had gone as fast as the old Mercury would go with that 351 Cleveland engine. I now have a new 408 Cleveland, Tremec TKX and 2.75 Detroit Locker that I hope will be able to power me to 200 this year. Going from 170 to 200 is easier said than done, as everyone reading this knows. Now for a team who’s roots are deeply ingrained into everything we do on… On this weeks racers spotlight, we have Burkdoll Racing and their newest monster! The third in a long lineage of streamliners, the Burkdoll’s newest monster is gunning for the current C: Fuel Streamliner record of 335 MPH. Jim and Juli have been going out to the salt for years, so long that their very first date was to the races! But, above all they have been some of our longest Tenured volunteers. Juli currently serves as chief timer, Jim having worked nearly all positions in the organization at one point or another including presidency. It’s time we highlight one of our own… On this weeks racers spotlight, we have our own Shirl Lloyd and his javelin! After taking some time off after joining the 130 mph club in 1978, Shirl felt the need for speed again and started attending the meetings again, coming back to a family’s welcome. Shirl has been volunteering for the USFRA for years now, starting out as a course steward in the early two thousands and expanding into basically any job needing to be done. It’s not uncommon, as many of us can speak to, that Shirl is the very first one out on the salt to start prepping for an event and having to come back late into the night to pickup his car and his team to go and race.
