This Tom Sawyer inspired story is beautifully shot and is equal parts humorous and just plain hard. The writing is raw and produces emotions exactly as I imagine writers/directors Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz intended. I laughed, cheered, winced, cried and left uplifted by the tenderness of Zak’s #birthdaywishes and realization that he truly is a “good guy”. #hero .
But I also left pensive, ruminating on the harsh reality of life for special needs individuals (the wonderful Zack Gottsagen) and their caregivers (portrayed by Dakota Johnson), those damaged by loss and financial hardship (Shia LeBeouf as Tyler, the lawless leader), and those who have lost self (Thomas Haden Church as washed-up wrestler Salt Water Redneck). Somehow these characters each break free in their own way to come out stronger and more lovable. .
