Our friends at @Shotdeck recently paid tribute to #Shakespeare adaptations on screen and we thought we'd expand on that with a look at 10 #Films or #Television adaptions that stuck a cord. 1/ Richard III (1995), shot by Peter Biziou BSC. For this adaption the filmmakers moved the story to the 1930s and placed Richard as the leader of a fascist party seeking power. 2/ Hamlet (1948), shot by Desmond Dickinson BSC. Sir Laurence Oliver's adaption became the go-to adaption winning the Oscar for Best Picture. 3/ Rosaline (2022), shot by Laurie Rose BSC. A comedic retelling of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," told from the point of view of Romeo's jilted ex, Rosaline - a must watch! 4/ Henry V (1989), shot by Kenneth MacMillan BSC. This adaption by Kenneth Branagh helped put the actor/director on the map. 5/ Hamlet (1996), shot by Alex Thomson BSC. The first full adaption of the Hamlet text. Branagh and Thomson chose to shoot on 70mm to capture the epic nature of the play. 6/ The Hollow Crown (2012-2016), shot by Zac Nicholson BSC (The War of the Roses, featured). This TV adaption was shot by many of our wonderful society members but the film featured is the "The War of the Roses" series. 7/ Macbeth (The Tragedy of Macbeth) (1971), shot by Gil Taylor BSC. An odd fact about this film is that many studios declined to finance it, so Playboy stepped in to the fund the film with Columbia Pictures. 8/ Othello (1995), shot by David Johnson BSC. Laurence Fishburne delivers a fantastic performance as the Moorish General, Othello. 9/ ShakespeareRe-told (2005), shot by Nic Knowland BSC (Macbeth episode). This modern retelling of four of Shakespeare's plays caught audiences attentions - the episode featured is "Macbeth" where the play is adapted to a chef (James McAvoy) and his restaurant-hostess wife who resort to murder to take ownership of a high-class Glaswegian restaurant. 10/ Julius Caesar (1953), shot by Joseph Ruttenberg ASC BSC. Suddenly, phones got better cameras, and too quickly. I've had no qualms in using a smartphone as my B cam in certain shoots. Then at times I think of college when we had tape cameras shooting at 576p, and getting a 1080p camera was really the ceiling - we were far too excited and really juiced that sugarcane to its limit once we got our hands on it. I learned video on a 480p camera. To think that only a few years later, I'm shooting 4k *instead of* 8k on my smartphone is such great fun. And my phone's already outdated. Waiting for the day when a 35mm sensor fits into a smartphone, I'll probably buy five of those. Anyway these are some usual, everyday boring visuals from my village. Turns out even here apartments have come up thanks to the new airport and tourists from Goa 'finding hidden gems' or something. Challengers (2024) par Luca Guadagnino. 🎬🍿🎞️ Ma note : 3/5 Amour, Gloire et Tennis ! J’ai passé un bon moment devant Challengers ! Des films dans l’univers du Tennis, il y en a pas tant que ça. Le dernier qui me revient en tête c’est l’excellent biopic La Méthode Williams avec Will Smith (2021). D’où ma curiosité d’aller découvrir le film en salles. J’ai été émerveillé par la direction artistique du film notamment sur les matchs. Whaou, coup de chapeau ou plutôt coup de raquette pour le travail monstre effectué. Les caméras embarquées comme si nous étions les joueurs qui frappent dans la balle c’est une idée géniale. La façon de filmer les personnages est d’enchaîner et alterner entre des plans larges et d’autres très serrés pour mieux cerner les émotions d’un personnage est excellente. En gros, la caméra était la balle de tennis littéralement. Globalement, la reconstitution de ce qui fait un tournoi de tennis est là y compris les off(s) et autres tractations internes (négociation,contrat, News TV). Il y’a de la tension et il y a une très belle alchimie entre Tashi, Art et Patrick. Les acteurs sont bons. Ce n’est encore une fois pas ce film qui me fera dire que Zendaya est une grande actrice mais je l’ai trouvé convaincante. J’ai eu énormément de mal avec l’histoire. Trop puérile et peu crédible. Mitigé aussi sur la fin du film. Je m’attendais à tout sauf à cela et cette issue ne m’a pas transporté émotionnellement. Regrettable. Le travail sur le son est bon même si à la longue petite overdose d’un theme qui revient trop souvent à mon goût. En conclusion, sans être une tête de série, ce Challengers de Luca Guadagnino nous offre des séquences renversantes et transpirantes d’ingéniosité. Une réalisation sublime qui valide l’énorme coup droit gagnant du film.
