Alamo Square, a beautiful residential neighborhood and park is an essential stop while in San Francisco for its stunning postcard view of the Painted Ladies, six extravagantly remodeled Victorian and Edwardian mansions next to each other. Built for high-ups like the archbishop and foreign consuls from Russia and Germany, young newcomers to the area began restoring these houses in the 1960's. They painted them in three or more colors to emphasize their architectural details. It is one of the most photographed locations in San Francisco and has been the backdrop for many movies, television shows and commercials.
