A few Sundays ago, I had the privilege of meeting Khir Johari (@khir19) who is elusive, extremely busy and with great reason why. His book “The Food of Singapore Malays” is seminal, a long time coming and a runaway success. I told Khir that I was probably his first cookbook buyer when I saw it on our publisher’s website (we are both represented by Marshall Cavendish @marshallcavendish). I was frantically soul-searching because a recipe of mine had been mistakenly described as Malaysian, not Indonesian, thus creating a viral uproar on a Malaysian foodie page. I felt that I needed to better understand the nuances and the background of my dishes! <br /><br />Khir treated me (and I invited one of my best buds Noora @nooraalsagoff whose family is intertwined with Khir’s book) to tour Geylang Serai market. It rivals markets I have been to elsewhere - be it Bali, Chiangmai or Fez in Morocco.❤️❤️<br /><br />The place holds lots of memories for me because my late parents always went there to get key ingredients. But believe it or not, I had never stepped foot in it. So it was the best tutorial one could have with Khir.
