I was strolling through Amcorp Mall on a Sunday when I came across a poster announcing that Khir Johari, author of THE FOOD OF SINGAPORE MALAYS, would be appearing for a book signing that day. I immediately sent a photo of the poster to @yatzerooni asking if she’d heard of the author and/or book. YES I LOVE IT she replied, which was when I knew I HAD to get a signed copy for her. I hung around the signing table but failed to get a copy—they ran out of books and I also had my own convoluted plans messing things up. BUT I got to talk to @khir19 and get a selfie for Yati to squeal over. And now, just a week later, I’m in Singapore pouring over the book with her, which prompted us to head to Warong Nasi Pariaman for a Nasi Padang lunch. I had an amazing meal, all because my curiosity was piqued by a poster in PJ. Flipping through this beautiful book was an education. It’s not a cookbook, but a deep dive into history and culture. A gloriously ambitious evening of food and education, exploration and adventure, of outsized personalities and erudite expositions. Having someone like Khir Johari to curate this special menu on this most special of nights was inspired, and there is none more qualified to pull it off with than Ivan Brehm, he who explores world cuisine. Each dish has its roots in the Malay world but also a connection to the wider world, explored through produce, cooking technique, origins, culture, trade, religion, exploration, simply people connecting to other people across the ages. I didn't know what to expect but this meal definitely exceeded expectations. I enjoyed it not just for the food but because I got such a wide view of Malay cuisine, tradition, culture, and practices, both ancient and modern. Unsurprisingly, Khir is an incredible host, always there to explain, to check in, to ensure you have a good time. A few Sundays ago, I had the privilege of meeting Khir Johari (@khir19) who is elusive, extremely busy and with great reason why. His book “The Food of Singapore Malays” is seminal, a long time coming and a runaway success. I told Khir that I was probably his first cookbook buyer when I saw it on our publisher’s website (we are both represented by Marshall Cavendish @marshallcavendish). I was frantically soul-searching because a recipe of mine had been mistakenly described as Malaysian, not Indonesian, thus creating a viral uproar on a Malaysian foodie page. I felt that I needed to better understand the nuances and the background of my dishes! Khir treated me (and I invited one of my best buds Noora @nooraalsagoff whose family is intertwined with Khir’s book) to tour Geylang Serai market. It rivals markets I have been to elsewhere - be it Bali, Chiangmai or Fez in Morocco.❤️❤️ The place holds lots of memories for me because my late parents always went there to get key ingredients. But believe it or not, I had never stepped foot in it. So it was the best tutorial one could have with Khir. This tome - and at 600-plus pages I truly do not use that word lightly - was 11 years in the making, and that degree of dedication and love suffuses every page, from the stunning photos to the carefully researched recipes. It’s less a recipe book than a volume of cultural anthropology and ethnography - he traces the creation and spreading across borders of dishes like mee rebus and mee siam, collects recipes from grandmothers, weaves in Malay poems and pop songs of yore, unearths the lost names of heirloom durians (Kuching Tidur, “Sleeping Cat”!) There’s a fascinating essay on the history of food incubated in Kampong Gelam, a neighbourhood I’m privileged to visit every Saturday - soy sauce in a Jalan Pekan foundry, Pashtun tea dust on Haji Lane, the once-popular Japanese-inspired mee odong of Jalan Sultan. This book truly is a monumental undertaking, and I think I appreciate that all the more given how fraught the subject of cookbooks became last year with the Makan scandal. I picked up my copies of “The Food of Singapore Malays: Gastronomic Travels Through The Archipelago” by @khir19 earlier this evening. I only intended to just flip through the book before my evening shower, but instead, got glued to the book for 2 hours, and that was just browsing! KONGRES EKONOMI BUMIPUTRA Isnin 7 Jun 1965 Pada hari ini dalam tahun 1965, Kongres Ekonomi Bumiputera yang pertama telah dibuka dengan rasminya oleh Perdana Menteri pertama, Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj di Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman (kini Pusat Pelancongan Malaysia (MaTiC)), Kuala Lumpur. Kongres yang berlangsung selama 3 hari ini, dipengerusikan oleh Menteri Pelajaran, Allahyarham Tan Sri Mohd. Khir Johari. Sebanyak 10 kertas kerja antaranya mengenai pembentukan modal perniagaan dan perdagangan, perkhidmatan dan pemasaran telah dibincangkan. Perbincangan itu berjaya meluluskan sebanyak 70 resolusi dalam sidang pelancarannya yang ketiga. Diantara resolusi-resolusi yang diluluskan ialah, mencadangkan nama RIDA digantikan dengan Majlis Amanah Rakyat Bumiputera. Sesungguhnya Kongres itu merupakan permulaan bekerja, berusaha dan melaksanakan apa yang telah diputuskan untuk merealisasikan matlamat yang dikehendaki. Editor's Note : When I saw this watch on @dyanasmd's instagram (thanks to @chelsiang), I knew it will be one hell of a story. So I slid into her DMs and asked her about the watch. She was very accommodating and told me that the watch belonged to her husband, @zairilkj. Special thanks to Mr Zairil and Ms Dyana for the opportunity to talk about this piece that carries in it, a piece of Malaysian history. For all of you who are not from Malaysia, Zairil Khir Johari is currently the Penang State Executive Councillor for Public Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation. He is also a Member of the Malaysian Parliament for Tanjung Bunga, Penang. I sat down in his office to talk about his watch that he got from his father . Snippet from the story : "This is a watch that my father wore his whole life since the day he got it until the day he passed away.
