You can freak out or 😎 take a breath.
You know the differentials for pale gums - this is vet school 101. Complete your clinical exam - vet school also taught you how to do this! .
OK. No murmur, quick PCV says 20, no history of trauma, clear lung sounds and heart sounds (so it’s not bleeding into the thoracic cavity) - either this dog is bleeding somewhere in the abdomen or it has IMHA. You identify this dog is in shock. You know how to treat shock! Give a fluid bolus (10ml/kg), provide oxygen and give pain relief. You have just brought your self 10 minutes to figure out your next move… aka. where is this dog losing blood from. 🏥

The unknown can be scary but remember go back to basics - do your clinical exam, run your diagnostics and take it step by step. Then have a back up plan - VIN/textbooks or a senior vet or a specialist clinic on call for advice. You will never be truely alone. After working in practice for 6 months IT GETS EASIER, you will adapt to your normal - for GP clinics this can be skin, ears and gastro and it will be a walk in the park. For emergency - our normal is gastro, seizures and trauma patients. It is absolutely daunting being sole charge - but taking deep breaths, approaching a case step by step and having someone to call relieves much of the stress associated.🥰✨✌🏼🐶
