Many years ago whenever I found myself longing for the Philippines, I would take a trip to the Yucatan in Mexico. It was the closest approximation I could find to the Filipino qualities I missed the most: people, climate, food, culture and society.
Back then we could just go without any prior reservation and would always find a room on the beach and pay in cash. I would never suggest that now of course. Because Tulum's coastline is bordered by the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve, development is restricted and kept to a minimum; hence, the appeal, high prices and in-demand nature.
This is one of my absolute favorite pictures from that period. My son was still young enough to be "natural" on the beach without causing a scene. Our resort would give us fresh coconuts right from the tree at no extra charge - just like home. Its probably why I hold such fond memories of Tulum.
