Good question! Surprisingly, VERY LITTLE. Almost everything I needed to get started I already had. This is what I consider totally essential:

1. A water bottle & a travel mug if you drink coffee/tea on the go
2. Cloth grocery bags & produce bags (fine knit is nice so they can also hold bulk bin purchases like rice)
3. Reusable utensils & cloth napkins
4. Some jars or Tupperware of some sort

But I'm willing to bet you already have most of these things in your house. The only thing I bought were some produce bags. I've since upgraded my water bottle, purchased some designated travel utensils, and every time I run out of something, I try to find a more ethical replacement. But bottom line is that you don't need to run out and buy a bunch of stuff!!! Using what you already have, you should still be able to SIGNIFICANTLY reduce your trash starting TOMORROW!
