My bread sticker is starting to look pretty worn but that's because I've saved it and reused it for 8 weeks in a row now! I buy the same bread every week so I just glance to make sure the price has stayed the same. ________________________________________ Now about that price... There was a time I would have gawked at a $4.99 price tag for a loaf of bread, but it doesn't bother me much now. First off, it truly tastes miles better than the $1.99 loaf and second, now that I'm not buying ziplock bags, plastic wrap, body wash, paper towel, garbage bin liners etc., I, personally, can justify the added cost of real food. ________________________________________ Honestly, I have overall seen my grocery bill go down since transitioning to a 'zero waste lifestyle' because I'm simply buying fewer things. However, it's not always cheaper on a per item basis. That's just the unfortunate reality. A lot of zero waste tactics are pretty much guaranteed to save you money, but others are not. Disposable plastic was the first thing I swore off and I think it's probably the most important. Even if you're not willing to give up all plastic packaging (after all, this is a little more challenging in Lafayette since we can't recycle glass curbside), make an effort to swear off the 'Big Four': 1. Plastic Bags!!!! 2. Bottled Water & Beverages 3. Straws & Lids 4. Disposable Coffee Cups _________________________________________ Bring your own bags, opt for a can or fill up a water bottle, skip the straw & lid at the sub shop, & ask your barista to make your drink in your reusable mug. Vegan 'Nice Cream'! (And someone's grabby fingers.) ________________________________________ Dairy has been one of the things that has been hardest for me to find without packaging and unfortunately my family has a major ice cream addiction. I can get it package free at the Baskin Robbins (they're willing to scoop it into a jar for me), but they charge per scoop so it ends up being pretty expensive. (Plus several of my students work there and let's face it, they probably already think I'm strange enough without me coercing them to fill up mason jars 😜) ________________________________________ Anyhow, I was so happy with my vegan cheese the other day that I figured I'd try a vegan version of ice cream as well. It's made almost entirely from banana and it's awesome!!! I'm really excited because I think I might have found a viable alternative everyone likes and we can make a bunch of different flavors. My little son technically just became the first in our family to make the switch to a bamboo toothbrush! Which is good, considering his old one was BY FAR the worst offender. Remember my previous post about food not breaking down in the landfill?? Ok, so the same is true for 'compostable' items! With less microbes and oxygen, compostable containers can sit in the landfill for a VERY long time (and also create harmful gases). ________________________________________So while I'm excited when stores offer compostable utensils & containers, I'm also worried about the number of people who don't understand that this doesn't do much good if they simply throw them in the trash. Yes, it's better than styrofoam, but let's make sure we're reaping the full benefits here! Ok, so I might have rescued some funny looking carrots at the market yesterday, but I also had the most epic zero waste fail I've had in a while! I had to get up early to meet students (and their parents) for a showing of their work. One of my colleagues brought in coffee and a stack of cups and before I realized it, I'd grabbed one and filled it up! 😳 ________________________________________Given this one cup probably isn't the end of the world but I was really surprised! I really thought that at this point I'd broken myself of the disposable cup habit completely! I'll blame my toddler who didn't sleep worth sh*** the night before ;) but it just goes to show, it can be a HARD habit to break! ________________________________________ BUT... It's also an incredibly important one!!! It's actually estimated that 500 BILLION coffee cups are produced EVERY YEAR and no, they are NOT RECYCLABLE! They're paper, yes, but they also contain a plastic liner which makes them difficult and not cost effective to recycle. Ok fine, it sorta does, but "sorta" being the operative word. It takes WAY more time and produces WAY more dangerous methane gas when food is left to decompose in the landfill, rather than being properly composted. (You can read why below.) ________________________________________ So, if you think composting isn't really that important, please reconsider! Composting is not hard and it's estimated that for the average household, it can reduce the amount of trash that ends up in the landfill by 40%!! ________________________________________ [An item biodegrades when it is exposed to microbes that feed on it. This process can happen either aerobically (with oxygen, like in a compost pile) or anaerobically (without oxygen, like in a landfill). Things break down a LOT faster aerobically and the process produces mainly CO2. Good question! Surprisingly, VERY LITTLE. Almost everything I needed to get started I already had. This is what I consider totally essential: _________________________________________ 1. A water bottle & a travel mug if you drink coffee/tea on the go 2. Cloth grocery bags & produce bags (fine knit is nice so they can also hold bulk bin purchases like rice) 3. Reusable utensils & cloth napkins 4. Some jars or Tupperware of some sort _________________________________________ But I'm willing to bet you already have most of these things in your house. The only thing I bought were some produce bags. I've since upgraded my water bottle, purchased some designated travel utensils, and every time I run out of something, I try to find a more ethical replacement. But bottom line is that you don't need to run out and buy a bunch of stuff!!! Several months ago my husband commented that he thought we wasted a lot of food. I immediately got defensive about it and told him that no we don't! We certainly don't waste any more than anyone else! The problem is 'everyone else' actually wastes a LOT of food. So this year, I made a pledge to not throw out ANYTHING. And with very few exceptions, we really haven't. I buy ONLY what I plan on using THAT WEEK instead of following the convention of maintaining a 'well stocked fridge'. I've had quite a few people ask me this and I admit I even wondered the same thing when I first began researching sustainability. But the answer is that 99% of the time, it's far more sustainable to wash a reusable item than to throw out a disposable. ____________________________ What people forget to factor in is just how much energy and water is used in the manufacturing of disposables. It's easy to overlook this, because we don't see it as the consumer, but it's a huge amount. I ask people to skip the disposables and put my order in my own reusable container all the time now. And they're almost always happy to comply. (I think in almost 6 months the only person who actually gave me a hard time was the lady at the Albertsons fish counter.) Everyone else generally says something like, "wait, so you just want it in that? Oh ok. I guess I can do that." ____________________________ Just be friendly, make sure your container is clean, and use common sense to decide if the situation is appropriate. As a rule of thumb, if it's a food item and they package it in the back, I won't ask. But if it's an over the counter transaction at the front of the store, I have no hesitation. Ever think 'I should do that', but then worry people might look at you funny? Yep, me too. In fact, I've wanted to try to live a zero waste lifestyle for a while but have worried about what others might think. We realized a while ago that our cockatoo only eats about a third of her expensive food, so we started collecting the seed she tossed out of her bowl and saving it for the ducks at the park. My son loves feeding the ducks, they like the leftovers, and it's a lot healthier for them than bread! (We're also in the process of trying to find a mix she actually eats. Yep, seriously. Dig through it! The first step towards eliminating garbage is to understand what you put in it. Make sure the items in your trash shouldn't actually be composted or recycled. Then look for your 'biggest culprits' (items that show up frequently). Do your best to eliminate these first. ___________________________And Keep in Mind: _____________ 1. If something is wet in your kitchen garbage, it very likely should be in the compost instead ____________________ 2. Just because your curbside recycling doesn't take something, doesn't mean it can't be recycled. Who's ready for some zero waste irony? Know what these are? These are reusable travel utensils dipped in... umm well, plastic...................................... So here's the story: ever since I started this zero waste journey, my husband has been really supportive, but he's gotten frustrated that I've actually lost a couple of our own utensils at restaurants. See, I never bought travel utensils of any sort; I just started packing utensils from our house in my purse. And 95% of the time, that worked just fine........................................... However, occasionally restaurants would hand us real silverware wrapped in a disposable napkin. I'd refuse to unroll it and just whip out my own instead. But my silverware and the restaurants', well, they basically looked the same. So twice now our utensils have disappeared with our plates. The two I've lost were from a mismatched set but now we're down to our "good" set. ........................................... So... My husband bought a couple travel sets for our family, and THEN he dipped them in a colored plastic coating he's used in the past on car parts. That way they'll never be confused with the restaurants. Lol. ........................................... Anyhow, my advice for zero waste newbies might be to find some travel utensils that look distinctly different from normal silverware. Good examples of this include: -eggs in cartons (not styrofoam or plastic) -pasta in cardboard (not plastic bags) & -large & family size containers of just about anything (provided you can use it all before it goes bad) & AVOID INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED ITEMS! Buy a large container of yogurt and dish it into small reusable Tupperware. Buy a chunk of cheese and cut off individual sticks. I think shopping from bulk bins is great and I wish I could buy everything in my own container, BUT... I don't think it's the most important thing for someone just starting out. Personally, I think the first step anyone should take is to avoid plastic bags and films! A lot of people tell me that they recycle their plastic bags so it's ok, right? They'll just be made into more bags? Unfortunately, no! Bags and films are downcycled into things like construction materials, playground equipment, etc. Those items then can never be recycled into anything else, so ultimately they end up as trash. However, the BIGGEST problem is that we produce WAY MORE bags than there's a market for so only a FRACTION of plastic films ever get recycled! Today's not perfect but low waste grocery run. Bulk/package free = coffee, sugar, chocolate chips, candy, & flour. I was informed though that our Whole Foods is phasing out bulk honey & maple syrup, which is a big bummer but I think Rouses might still have these ? I keep getting asked if I'm spending more money on groceries than I used to since, let's face it, Whole Foods isn't exactly known for their low prices. The answer is honestly, no! I'm definitely spending more per item, but overall there are so many processed things I'm not buying anymore that my overall grocery bill has gone down.
