JUST BECAUSE IT HURTS DOESN’T MEAN IT’S INJURED.<br /><br />Unfortunately, this is a fact from neuroscience that most Western PTs and specialists don’t yet understand. Just because your knee is hurting, it does not always mean the solution lies in the knee.<br /><br />For most of us it makes sense that if our knee is hurting we would go get it checked out, and we would expect to be given some exercises or treatment related to the knee. And for many of us, that will be exactly what we need.<br /><br />But when standard protocol doesn’t work for someone, it can become quite debilitating. By the time someone is diagnosed with chronic pain (a condition in which the nervous system actually adapts to send a pain signal even when no threat is present), they have seen an average of 7 specialists. Being told that there is not a problem with your knee, when it clearly hurts is extremely damaging.<br /><br />It’s not the specialist’s fault per se- the whole system of Western medicine functions in silos. We have specialists for each individual body part or system, but no one that truly understands how those systems interact with each other.<br /><br />If you have tried traditional healing practices and are not getting results, it is time for you to do something DIFFERENT. Thankfully, when you are playing with the brain, there is an infinite supply of different things to try! For most of us it makes sense that if our knee is hurting we would go get it checked out, and we would expect to be given some exercises or treatment related to the knee. And for many of us, that will be exactly what we need.
