Today I'm throwing up a second post. The building on the left (on the northwest corner of Lyell and Dewey avenue) was once a department store called Tent City. The first few levels were the retail store and the top levels were apartments.
When I was a little kid in the 80s I used to buy model cars and other hobby stuff here, whiffle bats, model rocket engines, footballs, you name it they had it.
At some point in the 90s the retail portion closed and more of the building was converted to apartments and other use. It went abandoned sometime around 2000 by memory.
The retail store Tent City actually did move to a new smaller location just around the corner on Dewey in the early mid-90s before completely failing.
It's been gone more than 25 years now, but the memories aren't. I look back on those years in particular fondly. (I'm not so sure about where we are today...)
