When we think of flightless birds, often the first species that comes to mind are penguins. But they're just one black and white section of a very colourful palette, so to speak! There are around 60 species of flightless birds still alive today, and one of them is the Tasmanian Nativehen (Tribonyx mortierii) pictured here.
One of twelve birds only found in Lutruwita/Tasmania, their stately walk and captivating berry-red eyes belie their absolutely awful call. The small clip is one I took on my phone (hence potato quality) of a small group of hens absolutely going for it and living up to their name of 'turbo chooks'. The bird brawl went on for quite a while, but there were no clear winners - only lost hearing 😛
