Black cockatoos are one of my favourite birds to hear or encounter. This is a female Carnaby's cockatoo. The Carnaby's cockatoos are only found in the Southwest of Australia. They are listed as endangered and they are in decline. Like many other species their biggest threat is habitat destruction. They also have a relatively slow reproduction rate so it can take them a very long time to recover from drops in the population or disasters. It's deciduous beech - or 'fagus' - time! The crinkled leaves of this Tassie icon is currently transforming the landscape into brilliant autumnal colours, before it descends into 'hibernation' for our cold season. The fagus is a paleoendemic - that is, an ancient species that was once widespread across the whole landscape, way back when Tassie was still connected to Antarctica (it's been found in the fossil record from 80 million years ago)! AMBUSH. Olive pythons are skilled ambush hunters, utilising classic sit-and-wait tactics to capture unsuspecting prey. As frequent rocky country residents and capable swimmers, many olive pythons will utilise waterholes in their pursuit of a meal. I first saw an olive python using a small rock pool for this purpose nearly seven years ago, and about ten metres from where this photo was taken. The area abounds in diamond doves, peaceful doves, spinifex pigeons, and an array of finches, as well as wallaroos and purple-necked rock-wallabies. All of these animals are fair game for the python (body size permitting), which will wait patiently in this position - completely submerged except from the eyes forward - until something comes down for what might be its final drink. I quite often see Malleefowls on this road but everytime I stop and change my lens from the macro to the bird lens, it seems to have disappeared 😅. Same happened yesterday, so today I went out with the sole aim to capture a Malleefowl. First lap of the road - nothing. I just came to the part of the road where I know some threatened Eremophila viscida grow, I past them amd just as I was going to turn around I all of a sudden spotted 3 more Eremophila viscida 50m from the first stand which I've never noticed before. And then on the way back I spotted the Malleefowl! It was just about to cross the road but hid back in the bush. I parked my car and just waited. Just a few minutes later it came out again and crossed the road and I finally got to take a photo of it. As I was waiting for it, I also spotted a Redthroat which I've never seen before. The joy of seeing these wonderful animals 1 minute from my back yard! Some fun facts about Kangaroos! 🦘 1. They’re the largest marsupials in the world. 2. The majority are left handed.. yep! 3. Some of them can hop 25ft (long, not high, lol) 4. They eat grass just like cows, but burp less methane. 5. Sometimes, they will drown their enemies 🦘 (Excuse the grain in these images, it was a dark evening) Growing up in Australia as a kid, kangaroos were cool, but I never thought too much about them due to how often I’d see them. everywhere, everyday. Eastern Osprey tucks into a Bream 28/03/2024 - Cool to see the nictitating membrane on the Birds eye in action. Helps protect and creates moisture very helpful for Osprey’s that are always diving in the water. They are translucent so the bird can see while in effect blinking, we cannot. Neither can we fly unassisted or dive in the ocean and catch fish with our feet. A cool bird I think. This particular day I watched 4 different birds catch 4 separate fish. It was windy and hot and 5 birds at one stage were within a 10m radius. Plus no other bird botherers were on the rock shelf. Except on big clumsy pommie.

Hanging by a thread, literally! These baby huntsman spiders are still clumped together for safety after hatching. Their vivid yellow-green will fade as they grow older and molt, but for now it helps them blend into the grasses where they were found 😊 I love using natural light in my photography, and I had just enough light at dusk to still illuminate the spiderlings before my camera started struggling. When we think of flightless birds, often the first species that comes to mind are penguins. But they're just one black and white section of a very colourful palette, so to speak! There are around 60 species of flightless birds still alive today, and one of them is the Tasmanian Nativehen (Tribonyx mortierii) pictured here. One of twelve birds only found in Lutruwita/Tasmania, their stately walk and captivating berry-red eyes belie their absolutely awful call. The small clip is one I took on my phone (hence potato quality) of a small group of hens absolutely going for it and living up to their name of 'turbo chooks'. I’ve been enjoying taking a break from posting on here for the last few months. Life became a bit chaotic over the summer and sometimes it’s nice just to strip it all back and focus on what’s important like my time with family and friends. This account was always meant to be a means for me to keep a visual diary to remind me of all my adventures and hopefully spread a little awareness of what treasures exist out there needing our protection and conservation efforts.
