I have completed my 46th trip around the Sun,
Go back in time if you will to 11/25/1977, Thanksgiving dinner approx 1830 hrs with all of my aunts, uncles, some cousins, and my paternal grandparents sitting at said table at our family farm. Merriment an cheer are as abundant as the wine and turkey when my parents stand up to make a toast. They anounce my birthday the the upcoming April. Cheers were heard all around except for 1 person, my paternal grandmother, who stood up in front of everyone and slammed her fist hard into the table. “ that can not be his child! I refuse to believe it! You must be some kind of a whore to have convinced him of it!” Dead silence except for the coffee pot in the background. My mom burst into tears tears and was going to leave right then, shock was the look from everyone at the table. My dad grabbed his coat to to head out the door, when my grandpa stood up to say congratulations to them and told my grandma to sit down and be quiet. My parents left. I am my dad’s child, and I was there designated the Black Sheep of the family before I was ever born. And hated by my grandma and too embarrassing for my mother.
This story got repeated every year on my birthday, which lead to a lack of celebration of any kind. I’ve learned to live with it. It is just another day on the calendar, what the DMV puts on your DL, and what I as a mortician will carve into your headstone, nothing more in my case.
Imagine being hated because you were born.
So please, save your breath and never wish me a happy birthday ever, not here, not in DM, and not via text message. It is unnecessary and not pleasant. It will make me very angry in fact, because all it does is remind me of how unwanted I am.
Just be kind to others, because you truly never know the battles one faces behind closed doors.
