Today is the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. This feast was established by Pope Pius XII in 1955 in order to combat the atheistic Communist holiday of “May Day” (May 1st).
The Church has always fought its enemies by either co-opting or supplanting their holidays. All Saints Day was made the day after Samhain/Halloween in order to redirect the pagan celebration of the dead toward the remembrance of the Saints.
But with the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, Pius XII was directly attacking the communist holiday by trying to replace it.
The Communist mindset engenders envy and laziness in its subjects. In every society it’s been tried, Communism has failed because it removes the incentive structure around hard work and directly penalizes success.
The Feast of St. Joseph the Worker counters this because Joseph personifies the value of humble labor. Work is not just something we do for our finances, it has a direct connection to our spiritual growth.
Many today fall into the error of thinking that being spiritual somehow means not working. But it’s impossible to grow spiritually without laboring on the material plane. All labor is service of one sort or another, and we are here to serve our fellow creatures.
