Yesterday, the CPA NSW celebrated may 1st, the international worker's day, with thousands of other unionists and progressive activists. We joined the march in calling for greater rights for workers, repealing draconian protest laws, and for the liberation of Palestine. Personal note: In some countries, sadly, Labor Day or the international workers day is not celebrated, but still, those workers will march with red flags, the sky ringing with their songs. However, in my home country Finland we dont celebrate this workers day but instead a day that celebrates students graduation, i oppose this on a personal level because most students on this day get drunk, and then the next day forget where they are or where they came from. My DC balcony was gorgeous and had a beautiful view. My PA balcony overlooks a parking lot and dumpsters. I’m grateful to have a balcony. I use the less-nice balcony all the time because I can share it with my kitties. In DC I was on the 7th floor and had no way of keeping them from scampering onto neighboring balconies. I love my cats but I was not going to do parkour hundreds of feet above the ground trying to chase them down. They weren’t allowed on the balcony. Which meant I rarely used the balcony because I felt too guilty with them watching me from inside. I will let things go to waste rather than enjoy something I can’t share with my loved ones. Because it doesn’t feel good without them. My dad was the same. He saved gifts of food to share with others on special occasions. This included gourmet popcorn sent by my aunt and uncle at Christmas, which my aunt discovered on top of the fridge on a visit. The special popcorn she sent several years prior—my dad was saving to share with others. She threw it away. I thought the occasion when three of my dad’s sisters came to the house to visit my mom when she was dying might be an appropriate one to share a jar of Damson plum preserves made by my grandmother, who died in 1994. It was 2000. My father was so mad at me. That proved NOT to be the special occasion he had in mind. He was mad at me a lot that summer. Which made me try to disappear more and more. Obviously he was saving the Girl Scout cookies I sent him each year for his birthday to share with others on a special occasion. I miss that unusual fellow. I would so love to be watching the protest news and talking it all through with him. I know he’s cheering them on from wherever he is. I love you, Papá. Thank you for giving me a unique and profound education. For instilling anti-colonialist, anti-imperialist values that have made choices harder for me than they have been for many around me. Helping me not make the same choices. Today is the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. This feast was established by Pope Pius XII in 1955 in order to combat the atheistic Communist holiday of “May Day” (May 1st). The Church has always fought its enemies by either co-opting or supplanting their holidays. All Saints Day was made the day after Samhain/Halloween in order to redirect the pagan celebration of the dead toward the remembrance of the Saints. But with the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, Pius XII was directly attacking the communist holiday by trying to replace it. The Communist mindset engenders envy and laziness in its subjects. In every society it’s been tried, Communism has failed because it removes the incentive structure around hard work and directly penalizes success. The Feast of St. Joseph the Worker counters this because Joseph personifies the value of humble labor. Work is not just something we do for our finances, it has a direct connection to our spiritual growth. Many today fall into the error of thinking that being spiritual somehow means not working. But it’s impossible to grow spiritually without laboring on the material plane. All labor is service of one sort or another, and we are here to serve our fellow creatures.
