ON THIS DAY IN 1980… The Empire Strikes Back was released in theaters! For those of us who were’t there (myself included) it was quite the cultural phenomenon. “A New Hope” was already a breakout, but Lucas outdid himself with this one. The stakes are higher, the character development runs deeper, and the interplay BETWEEN characters gets more interesting—and complicated. It balances the breakneck speed of space chases through astroid fields with the quiet, introspective moments of Luke training with Yoda. And obviously, it contains one of the best, most quotable plot twists in movie history. Since my main characters love Star Wars, seeing “The Empire Strikes Back” is something they would’ve anticipated. In fact, the first conversation between the main love interests is about Star Wars. What better way to hit it off? Little did they know they were about to live through something freaky of their own. And this time, there are no light sabers. And they can’t tell the good guys from the bad ones. #starwars #empirestrikesback #releasedate #georgelucas #scifimovies #1970scinema #1980scinema #writersofig #readersofinstagram #horrorgram #yafiction #youngadultbooks #youngadultfiction #aspiringauthors #onthisday #onthisdayinhistory #1980s

#Runaway #MichaelCrichton #GeneSimmons #SciFiMovies #1980sCinema #tomselleck

Inconceivable!! It’s Friday already?! That means it’s another #FiveStarFriday post for all you lovely people. Today’s pick is from @andersfholmes and it’s Rob Reiner seminal comedy classic The Princess Bride released in 1987. It stars Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shawn and the mythic and legendary Andre The Giant. As the kids say these days, it’s an absolute banger. Anders’s thoughts on The Princess Bride: “I know it’s a cliche to say that with some films you can watch it again and again and never get bored of it. The Princess Bride truly is one of those films. You could be down in the dumps, having a bad day or just not feeling well, you put this film on and it immediately fills you with joy and puts a big smile on your face. There is nothing about The Princess Bride that I would change. It’s perfect. Every camera shot, music choice, piece of dialogue and performance is top notch. Like everyone involved with this film understood and knew the assignment. It’s one of the best comedies of all time. And apropos, if you’re a super fan of the film, I’d recommend Cary Elwes’s book ‘As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the making of The Princess Bride’. Just one of the best films I have ever seen and I always get excited when I sit down to watch it” #ThePrincessBride #RobReiner #WilliamGoldman #CaryElwes #RobinWright #MandyPatinkin #andrethegiant #chrissarandon #inconceivable #hellomynameisinigomontoyayoukilledmyfatherpreparetodie #anybodywantapeanut #HolmesMovies #holmesmoviespodcast #fivestarfriday #movies #cinema #cinephiles #80smovie #1980scinema

This was another pickup from the Kino sale. Chuck Norris was a big 80s action star and the namesake of a thousand memes. This was one of his first starring roles in a ninja/martial art fueled film popular at the time… Title: The Octagon Year: 1980 Director: Eric Karson Starring: Chuck Norris, Karen Carlson, Lee Van Cleef Genre: Action, Martial Arts Synopsis: Scott James, a retired martial artist, discovers a sinister plot by a faction of ninjas to create a worldwide training camp for terrorists. Haunted by his traumatic experiences with ninjas in his youth and driven by the mysterious assassination of his friends, Scott must confront his fears and his own personal connections to the ninja world as he battles to thwart their plans. My Take: “The Octagon” is an essential entry in the martial arts genre of the early 80s, showcasing Chuck Norris at his best. The film mixes classic martial arts action with an intriguing storyline about ninjas and international terrorism. Although some elements may feel dated, Norris’ performance and the well-choreographed fight scenes keep it engaging and exciting. What are your thoughts on this title? ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL AND MOLLY RINGWALD SPENDING THEIR BREAKTIME IN A RECORD SHOP DURING THE FILMING OF "THE BREAKFAST CLUB" Algonquin Records, Des Plaines, Illinois - 1984 📷 Steve Kagan The Breakfast Club is a 1985 American indie teen coming-of-age comedy-drama film written, produced, and directed by John Hughes. The film tells the story of five teenagers from different high school cliques who serve a Saturday detention overseen by their authoritarian vice principal. The students pass the time arguing, listening to music, and smoking marijuana, gradually opening up about their home lives and their reasons for being in detention. Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall dated from 1984 to 1985. They met on the set of Sixteen Candles, where Molls played an awkward teen who had to deal with the school geek’s (Hall) crush, and started dating during the filming of The Breakfast Club. Although the entire group was growing close, the two spent the most time together of any cast members. Not only because they had already worked together, but because they were the only actual teens in the cast. Being both 16, they were required to spend many hours together with their on-set tutor. As the filming process went on, Hall and Ringwald became more and more interested in each other. In fact, Ringwald even told Hall’s mom that she was “falling in love” with her son. Soon enough, the two were involved romantically. Hall’s mother, Mercedes (who played his mother in the film, dropping him off at detention in the morning,) remembers being on the Breakfast set “and Molly coming up to me and saying, ‘I think I’m falling in love with your son.’ I said, ‘That’s so sweet- why don’t you tell him?’ The next day, they were walking around holding hands.” They had a lot in common, both were precocious ginger-haired actors with jazz musician parents and shared the same taste in music. Their love affair didn't last long, but the two are still good friends. 🎵 Madonna - Crazy for you 🎶

Friday’s film newsletter just gone out. To read it, please click the link in bio. Today’s film is Breaker Morant (1980), starring Edward Woodward. Here’s a taster: "Between the early 70s and the late 80s, Australia produced a series of remarkable films, sometimes described as the Australian New Wave. I’ve yet to see many of these films- it’s a failing on my part which needs to be corrected, but the ones I have seen are superb: Nic Roeg’s Walkabout (1971)- one of my all-time favourite films (a teenage Jenny Agutter stranded in the Australian outback), Peter Weir’s haunting Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), Weir’s moving, if flawed, Gallipoli (1981); My Brilliant Career (1979), starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill; the maritime thriller, Dead Calm (1989), also starring Neill- and, one of the best of the pick, Bruce Beresford’s Breaker Morant (1980). Breaker Morant is set in South Africa during the Second Boer War (1899-1902); the story of three junior officers: an Englishman, Lt. Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant (Edward Woodward) and two Australians, Lt. Peter Handcock (Bryan Brown) and Lt. George Witton (Lewis Fitz-Gerald) of the Bushveldt Carbineers- a dodgy irregular unit of the British Army- court martialled by the British for war crimes, including the murder of nine Boer prisoners of war and three captured civilians (including a German missionary) in three separate incidents. It’s a contentious, controversial and much-debated subject. Despite his considerable Englishness, Harry Harbord ‘Breaker’ Morant has become an Australian Folk Hero- like Ned Kelly- with Lord Kitchener depicted, to some extent, as a Machiavellian hypocrite sacrificing Australia’s innocents- acting under orders- on the altar of diplomatic and political expediency..." #australiannewwave #breakermorant #courtroomdrama #1980film #1980scinema #WarFilm #HistoricalFilm #MilitaryJustice #EdwardWoodward #ClassicFilm #AustralianCinema #FilmReview #MovieNewsletter #CinematicHistory #FilmAppreciation #AustralianFilm

"Too Beautiful to Die" (Italian: Sotto il vestito niente II) is a 1988 Italian thriller film directed by Dario Piana. Despite being an in-name only sequel to "Nothing Underneath" (1985), the film stands on its own, presenting a suspenseful narrative. The plot revolves around a group of models and dancers who face a grim reality when one of their own is raped and subsequently murdered. As the group grapples with the tragedy, they discover that the killer is seeking revenge against those involved in the initial assault. The tension rises when a new member joins the group for a music video-styled project. The film, criticized for its emphasis on style over substance, has garnered negative reviews from various critics, including Scott Aaron Stine, Roberto Curti, and L'Unita. #TooBeautifulToDie #DarioPiana #ItalianThriller #1980sCinema Cast: - John Phillip Law - Elena Pompei - Tano Cimarosa - Eva Grimaldi - Ted Rusoff - Silvia Collatina - Gianni Garko - Valentine Demy - Silvio Anselmo #VHS #VHScollector #VHScollection

I'm trying to get my head around the 1980s- that puzzling, head scratching, contradictory decade. Of course, there's no logical reason why the so-called '1980s' should start in 1980. Because it started in 1977. With zipped-tartan trousers, pierced ears and safety-pins. People- scientists and historians, especially, like to tidy things away in boxes. Is this a male trait? In Britain, I see two opposing energies. Mrs Thatcher's so-called 'Victorian Values'- like a seismic plate, rubbing up against a new-found vitality; a spiky, edgy and radical force, yet the two things part of the same. Vivienne Westwood and Colefax & Fowler may have more in common than they might imagine. I'm about to write my Sunday newslettter (for free subscribers on Luke Honey's WEEKEND FLICKS.) and it's all about an 80s British classic (without giving too much away, or perhaps, giving too much away, we're in eye-liner, quiffs and cricket jersey territory). I watched it again last night and realised that underneath the surface period detail, there's an 80s spike. It's fascinating. The first half of the 80s was a Golden Age of Independent British Film-making. I'm now beginning to understand just how good it was. An outstanding period of British cinema. #1980sculture #britishfilm #80sMovies #IndieCinema #Cinephile #FilmEnthusiast #1980sCinema #FilmHistory #britishfilm #FilmMaking #80sfashion #paulinaporizkovavogue #1980sdecade

Back to French comedy - remember 'The Toy' with Pierre Richard? My childhood world was shattered in half after seeing a boy's toy room filled to the brim with all the toys you can only imagine. I vividly remember a remote control boat and an electric toy car that you can drive around the house! I do slightly remember some unsettling moments though, like allowing him to send himself in a wooden box just to please a spoiled child that doesn't know the word 'no' and such. #TheToyMovie #PierreRichard #ClassicFrenchComedy #1980sCinema #RetroFilm #FrenchCinemaGem #TheToyFilm #VintageComedy #PierreRichardClassic #OldSchoolHumor #FrenchMovieMagic #CultClassicFilm #ThrowbackCinema #IconicFilmRoles #NostalgicMovieMoments #ComedicGenius #FrenchCinematicTreasure #love

Happy 40th anniversary to “Sleepaway Camp.” I love this special little slasher film from the 80’s. Purely unique and charmingly campy, this movie separates itself from other slasher movies of its time and the whole 80’s decade, especially with its ending. To this day, “Sleepaway Camp” is loved by many and it continues to find new audiences. It’s a movie that if you show it to someone, you won’t know what kind of reaction it will get out of them. God bless @felissarose123 and everybody who worked on this classic. #sleepawaycamp #sleepawaycamp40thanniversary #sleepawaycamp1983 #sleepawaycampmovie #movie #movies #film #cinema #horror #horrormovie #horrormovies #horrorcinema #horrorclub #slasher #slashermovie #slashermovies #80shorror #80shorrormovie #80shorrormovies #80s #80smovie #80smovies #1980s #1980smovies #80scinema #1980scinema

Released in cinemas on this day (7 November 1986): the late Jonathan Demme’s anarchic yuppie-in-peril screwball comedy / road movie Something Wild which I first saw as a teenager and had a HUGE impact on me. Demme’s diverse oeuvre encompassed everything from the wonderful women-in-prison exploitation flick Caged Heat (1974) to the Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense (1984) to AIDS drama Philadelphia (1993) to his biggest hit Silence of the Lambs (1991), but I’d argue this twisted black comedy is his masterpiece. Jeff Daniels, Melanie Griffith (pictured), and a genuinely scary Ray Liotta (who - as Owen Gleiberman of Variety put it - “was so lean and mean it was like seeing the movie debut of James Dean’s evil twin”) are outstanding as the central romantic triangle. Why isn’t Something Wild celebrated as a 1980s cult classic? It boasts a killer post-punk soundtrack AND a memorable cameo appearance from John Waters himself! #somethingwild #jonathandemme #melaniegriffith #jeffdaniels #rayliotta #johnwaters #lobotomyroom #1980scinema #cultcinema

DOLPH LUNDGREN and SYLVESTER STALLONE in a still from ROCKY IV PNE Agrodome, Vancouver, Canada - 1985 📷 Dave Friedman In Rocky IV, Dolph Lundgren played the towering, ripped Ivan Drago. Wanting their battle to look as real as possible, star and director Sylvester Stallone told him he wanted a few punches to really connect. “Dolph Lundgren put me in the hospital for nine days,” Stallone said in a previous interview. “I knew I was in trouble when I showed up and nuns met you at the ICU.” On the day of the fight scene, Stallone said he told Lundgren to forget the choreography. “Just go out there and try to clock me,” he told his fellow actor. “For the first minute of the fight, it is going to be a free-for-all.” Looking back at the footage, Stallone says the punch that did all the damage was an uppercut, which “caught the ribs and hit the heart against the ribcage.” The doctors told the actor that type of injury usually occurred in head-on collisions. Stallone quipped, “I said, ‘Close. I did hit a bus, of sorts.'” “All I did was obey orders,” Lundgren joked. “He was the boss. I did what he told me. We came back to L.A. and the producer was like, ‘Hey Dolph, you’ve got two weeks off — Sly’s in the hospital.'” 🎵 Survivor - Eye of the tiger 🎶

After watching Poltergeist 2 and 3, I will say that these sequels don’t reach anywhere near the heights of the first film but that’s not to say they aren’t worth checking out. These sequels have their flaws but they do have heart, atmosphere, creative ideas, cool practical FX, and the late Julian Beck’s performance as Reverend Kane. Poltergeist 2 and 3 tried to be more than just cash-ins, they tried to be good movies. These sequels have more substance and ambition than some modern paranormal horror movies like The Conjuring Universe. Overall, I would grade Poltergeist 2 a B- and I would grade Poltergeist 3 a C+. #flickortreatmarathon #poltergeistiii #poltergeist3 #poltergeist #poltergeistii #poltergeistiitheotherside #movie #movies #horror #horrormovie #horrormovies #80shorror #80shorrormovie #80shorrormovies #80s #80smovie #80smovies #1980s #1980smovies #80scinema #1980scinema #horrorclub

Santa Sangre 1989 Initial Rating: 8.5/10 This is going to be a huge shocker: this movie by Alejandro Jodorowsky is weird! I know, shocking! The director who made The Holy Mountain and El Topo made something funky. That said, this is actually a lot easier to follow than the other two Jodorowsky films I've seen. Santa Sangre is about a kid who works at a circus and has odd and somewhat abusive parents. Then he grows up and other stuff happens. Like I said, this is a weird one. A two sentence summary barely even scratches the surface. I liked Santa Sangre a lot. While it contains a healthy dose of Jodorowsky's typical offbeat visuals, I was able to get a lot more from this one as I watched it. The plot is fairly easy to follow, yet still has depth to it. There's random blasts of horror and comedy throughout the film, most of which land quite well. The effects are impressive for the low budget, and the acting did what it needed to. My biggest gripe with Santa Sangre is one character's arch that didn't make much sense to me. There are also a couple moments it can feel a bit pretentious for it's own good. But beyond that, this is a very well put together film. I highly recommend Santa Sangre. The Holy Mountain is better in my mind, but this is a way easier jump off point into Jodorowsky's work. The film flows well and still gives you a nice intro to the bonkers stuff that fills the directors films. Final note: nobody sponsers me (which makes sense considering that like 100 people tops will ever read this). But I watched this on Kanopy, and it's neat. I just plugged in my library card number and then could watch this for free. In other words get Kanopy. You're welcome. #SantaSangreReview #JodorowskyFilm #AvantGardeCinema #SurrealHorror #CinematicArtistry #CultClassic #1980sCinema #MexicanCinema #HorrorMasterpiece #FenixStory #CircusLife #ChildhoodTrauma #AxelJodorowsky #AdanJodorowsky #MovieMagic #Empire500 #CinematicGem #FilmEnthusiast #MovieNostalgia #MustWatchFilm #kanopy
