After finishing The Collector, I immediately started watching The Collection (2012), I had to know what happens to Arkin. The first one was filled with anxiety and gore, so that’s what I’m hoping to get again. The collector is back but this time at a club, leaving Arkin as “bait” in the trunk in the bathroom of the club. After escaping, Arkin must help find the next girl that was taken before the collector adds her to his collection. This one definitely tops the blood and violence of the first one. The story is not as great as the first one, some of it just isn’t believable. I did really enjoy the last 5-10 minutes, it really saved the movie for me. Laurel/New World Films . ________________ I was itching for another horror anthology after watching Body Bags 1993, so I decided to check out Creepshow 2 for the first time! This was just as fun as Body Bags and the first Creepshow. The stories are campy and entertaining. The practical effects look amazing thanks to Tom Savini, who also looked amazing as The Creep; I’d like to be him for Halloween @gahveenoh 👀. The music was good, but it’s a bit quirky and doesn’t have much suspense for the “scary” moments. Now for the segments themselves, (Old Chief Woode’nhead): This one didn’t age well… Started off slow but got interesting when the kills began though. (The Raft): This story was cheesy, but I liked the effects in this one the most. (The Hitchhiker): Probably my favorite story only because of Annie, who is honestly a horrible person but I found her hilarious lol. That poor hitchhiker too 😅 “thanks for the ride”. Overall, a great sequel and it’s a shame I didn’t just watch all three films back to back. I’ll be watching Creepshow 3 next, but I lowered my expectations when I saw it came out in 2006 lol. —Did you like Creepshow 2?— ________________ (Would I recommend/rewatch this?) -Definitely recommend if you haven’t already. John's Horror Corner: Dr. Giggles (1992), a wonderfully funny “medical horror” loaded with cheesy one-liners. This movie is solid! THE MONSTER SQUAD [1987] Finally got around to checking out this 80s classic again last week on 4K. I've seen this film loads of times in the past, but never has it looked as good as it does on 4K. This picture is absolutely amazing! This film itself is still a hell of a lot of fun with it's Goonies vibe mixed with classic horror characters. The release is stunning too, with three discs, one disc is the excellent Wolfman's Got Nards documentary from 2018. After being absolutely blown away by Horror in the High Desert, you know I immediately rented Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva (2023), especially since the third one is out now. This one looks into some tragedies in 2018 in North Eastern Nevada. Minerva was found dead in a trailer she was living in and another woman went missing completely even after a full search and rescue search. Could these crimes be tied to the disappearance and murder of Gary Hinge and what is actually happening out in the High Desert. This was a great sequel to an awesome found footage/mockumentary. I found it to be just as interesting as the first one and it had me hooked from the beginning. The sounds from the trailer and those clips from her sleeping were nuts as well as the clips from the search and rescue effort. 🎞Movie Review🎞 No Way Up (2024) (Rated R for language and bloody/grisly images) -90 mins- -32%🍅score with 22 critic reviews- . Directed by Claudio Fäh . . RLJE Films . ________________ I had mixed feelings about this after watching the trailer. The idea was interesting, but I’m used to killer shark movies being cheesy and full of bad CGI. To my surprise, No Way Out was much better than I expected! This movie is about a group of people looking for a way out of a crashed plane submerged in the ocean… and yes… sharks are making it more difficult 😅. The majority of the film takes place inside the plane with only a handful of characters, so if these survival films bore you… you can expect the same from this. I personally love these kinds of films, and to be honest this could’ve even worked without the sharks 🤷‍♂️. The film kept my attention the entire runtime with enough suspenseful moments... Although the sharks felt underutilized. I thought the acting was alright, and I found myself getting attached to some of the characters as well. There is some CGI but it’s not Sharknado bad lol, and I thought it has some cool underwater shots as well. Overall, I thought this was an above average shark flick if you compare it to a sci-fi original 😅, but it’s nothing to rave about. I’m just glad I didn’t skip it because it’s not as terrible as some of the reviews made it out to be. —What are your thoughts on this one?— ________________ (Would I recommend/rewatch this?) -If you love your creature features, add this to your list! I love non American horror movies so when I saw Incantation (2022), a Taiwanese horror movie show up while scrolling on Netflix, I figured I would give it a shot. I was even more interested when I realized it’s actually found footage or more of a mockumentary style. All being filmed by the main characters new camera, footage from a trip 6 years in the past and footage from recorded therapy sessions. It starts with Li Ronan speaking to the camera explaining the curse haunting her family. She hopes making the video will help her find help for her young daughter. We then learn that Ronan hasn’t had custody of her daughter Dodo, she actually gave her up years ago due to struggling with mental illness. Even though everything seems to be going great the first day Ronan brings Dodo home, it isn’t long until strange things start happening. As things get more strange, you start to wonder was Ronan actually mentally ill or was there something else going on the whole time. Holy shit does this movie start off with a brutal punch, no warning just goes right into it. With such little explanation and so much happening right away, it left me dying for answers. Even after it does slow down a bit to set up the story, the creepy moments sneak back in when you least expect it. The movie goes back and forth in time between 6 years ago and the present, which does make it hard to follow at times. Overall it is a good movie and it wasn’t what I was expecting at all. There was a twist at the end that was really great and helped wrap things up nicely. Shudder/My Box Films . ________________ I hate spiders… and this didn’t help… Unlike many killer spider films, Infested takes itself seriously and delivers with great effects and plenty of creepy crawly action. The main character was kind of annoying and is the reason many of the events end up happening… but I’ll ignore it for the plot I guess 😅. The acting is good and the cinematography looks great. I can see why the director of this got the green light for the next Evil Dead movie, and I’m excited to see what else he’s got 👏. I love horror films that aren’t American and especially if they aren’t in English. I was so excited to see When Evil Lurks (2023) since I had never seen an Argentinian horror movie before. I saw it right when I came out so I figured it was time for a rewatch. Pedro and Jimi realize that there is a possessed one in their small rural town, and a demon is about to be born. When their plan to get rid of him goes wrong, an epidemic of possession spreads amongst the rural town. They must get Pedro’s children and escape before they all fall victim to the possession. This was a refreshing take on possession. It was such a unique and interesting story without skipping on the bloody and gore. The violence is extra shocking because of how well placed it is; my jaw hit the floor when the dog attacked. Or the whole scene with Ruiz, his wife and the goat; so shocking and perfect at the same time. Kids not being sweet and innocent was also amazing, I loved how the children were protecting the rotten and turned into gross evil little things. I really enjoyed this movie both times I watched it; the second time even more than the first. It is in Spanish so you got to be down to read the subtitles but it is so worth it. I love sci-fi/creature horror so Monsters looked like something I would enjoy. There is nothing like a good alien monster movie so I had to give it a shot. Six years ago NASA discovered the possible alien life. We sent a probe to gather samples but upon returning the probe crashed near the Mexican border. Soon after the crash, new life forms began to emerge and the whole area had to be quarantined off and the American and Mexican militaries contain the creatures. Andrew and Sam must cross the quarantine zone on foot, avoiding the creatures to make it back to the United States. This is a fun alien/creature feature. The creatures are scary but also unique and cool looking. The story is pretty exciting, even if it is a bit predictable. It has its faults but overall it was pretty good and it kept my interest. The folk horror doesn’t stop … today, @fiona_thompson and I have been to Lord Summerisle’s home, Culzean Castle. We first visited a couple of years ago but unfortunately, while it was possible to see the exterior, the castle itself wasn’t open. Today it was. Most of the castle interiors as seen in The Wicker Man were shot at Lochinch Castle, which, unfortunately, is a private residence and not open to the public, but one interior scene was shot at Culzean - the room just before Summerisle and Howie exit to take a tour of the gardens. It was great to be able to tick-off another Wicker Man location, especially on May (bank holiday) Day! John's Horror Corner: The Cellar (1988), the classic story of young boy versus the monster in the basement. For 75 minutes this movie tries to cultivate a rich story and meaningful characters while slogging you through an occasional monster claw and general boredom. The last 10 minutes, however, is a blast of creature effects and silly nonsense. So this is probably a recommendation more for the “bad movie” fans than it is to the general 80s horror crew. New Life (2023) is this month’s rental in the horror group I am part of. I went in totally blind for this one, and I sure am glad I did. Jessica is on the run and heading north for the border. Elsa, a fixer, is assigned to bring her in. As the pursuit unfolds so to the details of what is really going on and what is actually at stake. This was a beautiful thriller, a slow burn done very well. Jessica’s story is nonlinear which helps build the background and give more context; while Elsa’s story is woven in until the two finally intersect. They really have you focused somewhere else and when I realized what was actually going on it made it so much more fun. This is not the scariest of movies, so if you’re looking for violence, blood and gore, this movie isn’t for you. After enjoying the first Blackwell Ghost movie, I had to rent The Blackwell Ghost 2 (2018). This one picks up right where the first one left off.. that package at his door. If you haven’t seen the first one, I highly recommend you go do that, then read this review. Turner is heading back to the house after receiving a package from a woman who actually knew Mrs. Blackwell. After finding out some new information, he decides to spend 3 more nights at the house. Turner was really hoping for good footage since the house is being sold soon; it seems like he got exactly what he wanted. This one was just as good and fun as the first one. It also made me want to keep watching the rest of them; which I will most likely do soon.
