A number of fine large gobblers gazed curiously from behind the glass window at the crowds gathered about them.” — Atlanta Constitution, 1902 🦃 🦃 🦃 (Today's Throwback Thursday ATL takes us Peachtree St. in 1899.) In October of that year, Atlanta's very first department store opened to great fanfare. Bass Dry Goods was located on the city's bustling Whitehall Street (later renamed Peachtree Street). Though only five floors, the Atlanta Constitution heralded the building as a skyscraper, calling it "the best constructed and most thoroughly equipped building south of Philadelphia." What could you buy at Bass Dry Goods? Pretty much everything... Basement - Household goods 1st floor - Dry goods 2nd floor - Men’s clothing, shoes, & hats 3rd floor - Carpet & furniture 4th floor - Dressmaking & millinery 5th floor - Groceries (including a “meat, fish, and vegetable department”) The store was known for its creative marketing stunts—displays with live canaries, a full orchestra during special events, and even turkeys waddling in the storefront windows during Thanksgiving. For 125 years, the Bass Dry Goods building has stood proudly in @downtownatlanta (about a block from the Five Points MARTA station). Next time you're around, glance upwards to see the same terra cotta decorations that graced the building when it first opened in 1899. It's true... We miss the great view we had of that gorgeous stadium and shiny logo. We loved the different eras of architecture from this one vantage point... To the ➡️ - Historic Hotel Row (early 1900s) To the ⬅️ - 222 Mitchell (mid 1900s) And ⬆️ - The undeniably modern @mercedesbenzstadium HOWEVER... It's okay! The signs of progress aren't always what you expect. Those cranes are part of a neighboring development, @centennialyards. And that building is going to be an 18-story residential tower. By the end of 2025, it will be home to 300 new neighbors. And that's a very good thing. We're very proud of the work we're doing here. But we also love watching others innovate, build, and work towards a better Atlanta. ❤️

👀 We're always surprised what we find in these old buildings. Take, for example, the Bass Furniture Building at 142 Mitchell Street. During a recent exploration, we stumbled upon.. — some fallen chandeliers, — a random drum kit, and — a tiny toy scarecrow. Standing for more than a century, this distinctive brick building in downtown Atlanta was once home to Bass Furniture. And thanks to the hustle of local preservationists in the 1970s, it proudly sits on the National Register of Historic Places. Although our evaluation is ongoing, we're optimistic about the future of this space (potentially a residential community with around 40 units). Boosting the residential population in South Downtown is one of our top priorities. More residents means more support for local businesses, improved safety with increased foot traffic, and a more vibrant social scene. We can't wait to see more people calling @southdowntownatl home. 😀
