A week of making compromises #datavisualization Compromises aren‘t always easy, but they’re a part of life. This week, I decided to document every compromise I made, using the concept of color blending as a metaphor. Just as artists blend different hues to find the perfect, harmonious color, compromises involve blending diverse ideas or positions to find a workable middle ground. 🔎 How to read Swipe left to see the chart keys 🔑 Each circle cluster represents a compromise I made during the week. The color combinations reflect the reasons behind these compromises: The whys: - Analogous color: For managing relationships - Complementary colors: For resolving conflicts - Triadic Colors: For avoiding negative outcomes A dot next to a cluster means the compromise was due to non-human factors, like weather conditions. 📊 Takeaways I logged 7 compromises this week, with 6 being people-related. Initially, I viewed compromises negatively, but this exercise revealed a different perspective: often, they‘re about trying to make things work, a sign of effort and adaptability. And when they don’t? It‘s okay to simply say ’No‘ and step aside. Have you made any compromises lately? What did they look like?

A week of frustrations #datavisualization Adulting is hard, isn’t it? There are always those unexpected moments that throw us off, making our big goals seem far off. This week, I took the time to document all those frustrating moments. I was going to make this super sad and serious. But then, Tulip Day happened, and I thought, why not make this fun and colorful instead? It’s all about getting through the tough stuff and finding a way to smile, right? 🔎 How to read Swipe left to see the chart keys 🔑 Each tulip petal represents a moment of frustrations. Different color hue indicates to whom I feel frustrated. Pink means I was frustrated because of myself; Yellow means I was frustrated by policies defined by work or society. Purple means I was frustrated by other people; Orange means I was frustrated by the environment surrounding me, which could be weather, tech, or simply feel unsafe. Each tulip petal stands for a different frustration. The color tells you what caused it: Pink for frustrations with myself; yellow for annoyances with work or society’s rules. Purple petals are for frustrations with other people, and orange for when my environment gets to me—like bad weather, tech problems, or not feeling safe. The number of lines on each petal shows how frustrated I felt—the more lines, the greater the frustration. 📊 Takeaways About 70% of my frustrations were tied to feeling constrained by rules or unhappy with my surroundings. The deepest frustrations came from dealings with other people. Interestingly, I noticed a lot of entries about rain affecting my plans, even though I usually don’t mind the weather. And funny enough, getting out of bed was a struggle every. single. day. Maybe it’s a sign I should just wake up whenever? Hoping your week has been smooth and frustration-free. A week of using ‘I think’ at work. #datavisualization After counting a week of ‘Just’ last time, the next words that pops up is ‘I think’, another term I frequently use to soften the tone when sharing opinions. This time, I tracked all the ‘I think’ I wrote in @slackhq A visit to aquarium @calacademy inspired this week’s design. My brain was full of those soft and glowing jelly fish 😆 🔎 How to read Swipe left to see the chart keys 🔑 🦀 Crab: I wrote ‘I think’ because I was expression an opinion that I was not 100% sure about. For example: I think the content makes sense. 🪼 Jelly fish: I wrote ‘I think’ because I want to soften the tone. For example: I think we should first chat about what we wanna present first. 📊 Takeaways Similar to the week of ‘Just’, I did notice I probably said more ‘I think’ than I wrote. I was trying to sound less dominant or assertive because I believe there is ambiguity in everything. It’s not very helpful if you’re trying to convince someone, but at the same time, I find it’s important to be more open-minded. There is no right or wrong answer, only better or worse, isn’t it? How and how often do you use ‘I think’? A week of “words” searched on Google #datavisualization If there’s one site I can‘t do without, it’s @google . I feel like Google knows everything about me at this point. This got me thinking: What exactly am I searching for all the time? To find out, I tracked every search I made this week. Inspiration hit when I saw this amazing Japanese fireworks festival poster. As the new year unfolds, I decided to capture my Google searches with the same burst of color and energy seen in those fireworks. 🔎 How to Read: Each firework tail in the visualization represents a Google search, grouped by the purpose behind it. There are four seasons: - Red firework: Research. This is when I‘m diving into new topics, like languages, history, or social skills. - Blue firework: On the hunt. I have a vague idea but need Google to fill in the blanks. - Yellow firework: Casual lookup. Searching without a specific plan in mind. - Purple firework: Planning. Gathering information for future activities, be it travel, cooking, or something else. 📊 Takeaways: I’ve searched 72 times on my phone in a week. And I’m pretty sure adding in my iPad and computer, we‘d hit triple digits. er. Not a day went by without a Google search, proving its role as a staple in my life. Most searches were practical, like finding a place to eat, but a good chunk was all about learning something new, such as a new vocabulary or a historical figure. What’s your latest Google search? Or, if you‘re not using Google, where do you turn for answers? This month, we have a sketch challenge with my friends. Every other day, we draw a sketch on a new topic - there are 15 of them. Yesterday’s topic was “well”. This data sketch represents the amount of water supply in Texas reservoirs yesterday (Dec 4), according to wateroftexas.org. I created a non-map visualization to represent it as a conceptual data landscape. #datavisulisation #d3 #dariakoshkina #datasketch #water #dataart

How far can your monthly food budget go in the Apple universe (female 19~50 years edition) #datavisualization Today, I'm looking at something a bit different: food budgets. Did you know the @usdagov publishes a monthly report on different food plans? They break it down into low-cost, moderate-cost, and liberal plans, showing us how to maintain a healthy diet at various price points. 📊 I focused on the monthly food expenses for women aged 19-50. With the holiday season in full swing, I got curious about how these numbers stack up in an Apple store. 🛍️ (can you believe it’s December?!) Here's what I discovered: On a low-cost plan, spending is about $311.4 per month – that's almost like buying AirPods Pro. For those on a moderate-cost plan at $380.28, it’s comparable to the price of an Apple Watch. And on a liberal plan with $485.16? That's about what an iPad costs. 🎧⌚️📱 This got me thinking – we spend a lot on food just to live. But skipping that new Apple Watch could mean saving a month's worth of groceries! 💰🛒 📌 Quick note: The original USDA data is for a 4-person family. I adjusted the numbers for one person by adding 20%, as they suggest. You can check out the original 4-person family costs in the iPad display of the drawing or find more details in the link below. A week of activity highlights at Crane Cove Park #datavisualization Have you every wondered what people are doing after work in your neighborhood? This week I did some people watching at a local park. Everyday after work, I’d go to the park, stand at a corner, and count people who passed by a particular point for 3 minutes. There were many flowers blooming in the season, so I decided to create a design based off of those beautiful flowers. 🔎 How to read Swipe left to see the chart keys 🔑 Each flower or leaf represents a person. If the person is traveling with a dog, it’s shown as a crane feet. Type of activities: Dark green leaf: Walking Light green leaf: Running Pink flower bud: Biking Yellow Daisy: Relaxing Coral pink magnolia: Scootering Purple pansy: Playing 📊 Takeaways Monday and Thursday were the least popular days. Walking was the most popular activity among all. I was expecting more biking or running, but the runner-up was actually playing. It made sense since it’s a park in a pretty residential neighborhood, and there were many kids having fun in the park. This is my 2nd time people watching. TBH, I wish I could observe for 10 minutes like what I did last around, but I felt a bit shy this time. Observing people makes me feel more present and get to know my neighborhood and the people around me. For example, I never really know there are I live in a very kid-friendly area until I saw so many kids playing in the park. Do you like people watching? A week of Desserts #datavisualization #nationaldessertday Finally, I decided to document all the sweets I had during a week. I was really hesitate to track this data initially, because I was worried about seeing myself eating too much sugar. But I guess one has to face the reality one day, hasn’t she? To celebrate my love for desserts, I used a night sky themed design. Since stargazing might be the only equivalent activity as having desserts, to me personally. 🔎 How to read Swipe left to see the chart keys 🔑 Type of sweets: ☾ Moon: Wagashi; ★ 5-Pointed Star: Pastry; ✶ 6-Pointed Star: Dessert On a scale of 1(low) to 5(high), I rated each sweet’s flavor and appearance based on personal preferences. - Flavor rating: Number of ✦ - Appearance rating: Number of stardust trail 🩷 heart means I was enjoying the sweet with other people 📊 Takeaways On average, I had one sweet treat everyday. Although technically, I only ate sweets 4 out 7 days. One day I had 3, no shame here 🤣 I least favorite one was a Cherry coconut elderflower matcha affogato, it’s just too much flavors in one tiny cup. The most memorable one a bunny shaped wagashi from @k.minamoto_usa . It’s too cute to eat. I do feel like every time when I was documenting food, I became more conscious about what I was eating, so maybe I normally ate more sweets? What’s your favorite sweet? A week of mood #datavisualization This week I paid extra attention to my mood, noticing what made me feel happy or upset. The design concept is quite subjective. I thought about how to show this and decided to use donuts 🍩 because they make me happy. I picked a flavor I don't like for the tough times, and my favorites for the bright moments. 🔎 How to read Swipe left to see the chart keys 🔑 Each donut represents a mood. 🍩 Cinnamon Sugar - Negative mood 🍩 Flavored Glazed - Positive mood 📊 Takeaways My mood dipped during the first half of the week, gradually picking up as the weekend approached. This is all within expectations, but observing it closely helped me identify what was driving my mood swings. I also found that associating my bad mood to a donut flavor that I dislike made me want to toss it quicker. Guess that's one way to feel better, right? 🤣 Thanks for reading! 💜 . . . . . . #datahumanism #datadrawing #deardata #informationisbeautiful #mentalhealthawareness #worldmentalhealthday #datatherapy #dataiscute #datajournalism #datasketch #datavizsociety #doodle #deardata #drawing #invisibledata #procreate #journaling #journalart #womenwhodraw #artoftheday #illustration #artistsoninstagram #イラスト
