Amidst the rugged beauty of Alaska’s Brooks Range, caribou roam freely just outside the Nunamiut community of Anaktuvuk Pass. Situated along the traditional migration routes of the Western Arctic and Teshekpuk caribou herds, Anaktuvuk Pass lies within the boundaries of what later became Gates of the Arctic National Park. This remote community is the ancestral home of the inland Inupiat people known as the Nunamiut, whose lives have been intricately intertwined with the caribou for millennia. Here, caribou are not merely a staple food source but also hold immense cultural and spiritual significance. However, the forced settlement of the Nunamiut into a single village site in 1957 disrupted their nomadic way of life, which revolved around the annual caribou migration. The Western Arctic Herd, once the largest caribou herd in the world, now faces a critical status. Since 2003, their population has plummeted from half a million animals to approximately 188,000, with a quarter of these losses occurring in just the past three years. This decline not only threatens the long-term survival of the caribou but also jeopardizes the traditional lives and livelihoods of the Nunamiut people. Step into @AmyToensing’s dreamy landscape of Australia’s Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, as the moon sets behind desert oak trees in the early hours of the morning. The park is known as a living cultural landscape where earth and memories exist as one, its iconic rock formations hiding ancient wisdom and diverse plant and animal life. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again… and Karine Aigner (@kaigner) did, speculating that she took nearly 10,000 frames to produce this spectacular moment! This perplexing cactus bee behavior known as balling occurs when a gang of worker males all attempt to mate with the single queen in the center. Little cactus bees turn into big competitors in this all-out buzz-brawl for a queen. @kaigner’s life reads like a set of novellas. Raised in Saudi Arabia, Karine motorcycled through Vietnam, circumnavigated the globe by ship, taught English in Taiwan, and even had hyena pups chew her shoes while wearing them. Karine’s action-packed adventures have driven her passion for stories of animals: their relationships to humans, their relationships to their own world, and their existence in the space between the two. In a vast expanse of ice, @estherhorvath witnesses a polar bear and her cub cautiously approach flags placed near the Polarstern icebreaker in the central Arctic Ocean. The flags mark the “go” and “no go” areas towards the scientific installations on the sea ice. From 2019 – 2020, Esther Horvath spent almost four months on board the Polarstern documenting the MOSAiC expedition, the largest ever Arctic Ocean science expedition. These important reserves provide fresh water to communities and harbor vital ecosystems but face enormous danger due to premature melting accelerated by climate change. Jane Goodall braved the unknown to give the world a remarkable window into the lives of chimpanzees. But her research methods were entirely unorthodox. She named her chimpanzee subjects instead of giving them numbers and insisted that they had individual personalities, rather than typifying their behavior. Because she had not been to college, she simply researched in the way that made the most sense to her! Once she began studying at Cambridge in 1962, she became aware that her methods went against those established by the scientific community. She was told be her professors that she had done "everything wrong" in the field. However, Jane's extraordinary body of work proved her methods worked. Over time, the scientific community has gradually adopted Jane's perspectives and approaches, turning what was once seen as "right" on its head. Jane Goodall has inspired all of us to challenge norms and follow our intuition, even when it seems unconventional. We are honored to share the work of @tailyrirvine who is a Salish and Kootenai journalist born and raised on the Flathead Indian Reservation in western Montana. Her work focuses on providing in-depth representations of the lives and complex issues within the diverse communities that make up Native America. She is one of the recipients of our first Environmental Photography Grant and is currently using the funding to document the change of stewardship of public lands back to tribal nations. At one time, there were as many as 60 million bison in North America, but mass slaughter was used as a tactic to weaken Native American resistance, nearly wiping out the species entirely. The devastating impact on Native American communities and culture cannot be overstated. Conservation efforts in the late 19th and 20th centuries helped to save the buffalo from extinction, and today, they serve as a symbol of resilience. Her image, “Buffalo Walk”symbolizes deep historical and cultural relationship between the Séliš (Salish) and Ql̓ispé (Kalispel or Pend d’Oreille) people and the buffalo, known as q̓͏ʷeyq̓͏ʷay. It emphasizes how buffalo were integral to a traditional way of life, providing not only material sustenance but also spiritual significance. Despite facing challenges such as non-Indigenous settlement and government actions, including the establishment of the National Bison Range on their land, the tribes have persevered in their efforts to maintain their connection to the buffalo. The return of the Bison Range to tribal ownership recently represents a significant restoration of sovereignty and this reconnection with cultural identity and heritage. Earlier this month, Pat and I were fortunate enough to snag tickets to see Dr Jane Goodall speak in Vancouver BC in celebration of her 90th birthday. We’re so lucky to have been able to take Lily and Liam to hear the extraordinary story of her life. Dr Goodall has long been an inspiration to me and I’m so grateful Lily got to see firsthand how this woman, alongside many others, are making significant contributions in STEM. Happy World Penguin Day! Did you know that King penguins are serial monogamists? They are believed to find a partner and stay with them throughout the 13-16 month breeding season. The couple takes turns cradling their egg on their feet to keep it warm and then care for the vulnerable chick together. We are so grateful to the incredible @sissebrimberg for contributing this stunning moment of King Penguins nuzzling one another. When I was a young photographer living in Denmark, a family member suggested I read Jane Goodall’s book about her work with the chimpanzees at Gombe. My first good look inside the Geographic was a revelation — it inspired me to try to get a foot inside the door of the magazine. Though we only have met briefly Jane became my inspiration and my adopted mentor from the beginning of my career at the Society. She has been an inspiration ever since, and I am honoured to be one of the 90 female photographers celebrating her and the critical conservation and community-building work she has done for so many, many years. On our recent tour with Dr. Jane, she shared something insightful (as she often does). When we asked, "When did you learn that?" she replied, "Just this very second." If there's one lesson we took away from this 90th birthday tour with Dr. Jane, it's this: Keep learning. Keep asking questions. Be present and interested in the world around you. Retaliate against the thought that you've got it all figured out. Surprise and delight yourself with new information. Assume everyone you meet has ideas you've never considered (maybe very good ones!). Stay curious. Stay open. Stay engaged. This Earth Day, I feel privileged to join forces with Dr. Jane Goodall (@janegoodallinst) and 90 remarkable women, advocating for our planet and its inhabitants. I want to celebrate their work and share my photo exploring the secret world of pandas—a journey that spanned three years and tested every ounce of my creativity. The experience was as surreal as it was unforgettable. The biggest challenge was getting access to one of the world’s most endangered species—the elusive giant panda. With its precarious status and formidable teeth and claws, each panda is as vulnerable as it is precious. It was not just about getting access and gaining trust, but also about working without impacting them. I had to become one of them and wear a panda suit scented with their urine each day. The hope was that they would not become comfortable with humans since we are their biggest threat in the wild. Right now, there are fewer than 2,000 Giant Pandas in the wild. For over thirty years, researchers have been working on breeding and releasing pandas, augmenting existing populations and protecting their habitat. And they’re having success. They are taking captive born pandas and releasing them back into the wild and their numbers are growing. It’s one of the most hopeful and surprising stories I’ve had the privilege to work on. Today, let us celebrate not only the strides we have made but also the commitment of those like Dr. Jane Goodall and these remarkable women in this initiative, who dedicate their lives to protecting this planet. Dr. Jane Goodall is touring the world for her 90th birthday to inspire us to protect and respect our Animals, to protect and respect our People, and to protect and respect our Environment. — To acknowledge the interconnectedness of all aspects of our world. Dr. Jane brings a message of hope that each one of us can make an impact, no matter how small the contribution (pick up litter, smile at a stranger, donate your excess, plant a tree.) Dr. Jane believes our planet needs all of us to help, right now. I was lucky to see her in Vancouver, BC; she’s remarkable, alert, passionate, an icon. These elephant diptychs from my archives seemed to fit the message. African Animals and their Zoo Counterparts - an unfinished project from 1990-91. My photography business got busy and I never finished this, although it has never left my mind. These are scanned work prints made to fit IG - originally meant to fit side by side. Earth Day. Dr. Jane Goodall is touring the world for her 90th birthday to inspire us to protect and respect our Animals, to protect and respect our People, and to protect and respect our Environment. — To acknowledge the interconnectedness of all aspects of our world. Dr. Jane brings a message of hope that each one of us can make an impact, no matter how small the contribution (pick up litter, smile at a stranger, donate your excess, plant a tree.) Dr. Jane believes our planet needs all of us to help, right now. I was lucky to see her in Vancouver, BC; she’s remarkable, alert, passionate, an icon. These elephant diptychs from my archives seemed to fit the message. African Animals and their Zoo Counterparts - an unfinished project from 1990-91. My photography business got busy and I never finished this, although it has never left my mind. These are scanned work prints made to fit IG - originally meant to fit side by side. We are honored to share the evocative photograph of @aletheiacasey’s A Lost Place (Wiradjrui Country). Through the painting, scratching, and reworking of her own archival images, Casey breathes new life into her memories, confronting the looming threat of environmental challenges with courage and creativity. The work is her personal reaction to the climate emergency, particularly the Australian fires that almost destroyed her family’s home. The interference of her brushstrokes on the prints is a mirror of human intervention in nature, her own hand attempting to control the uncontrollable.
