(1943) Our Celebration of Memorial Day starts off with this Portrait of "Douglas MacArthur" recipient of the Medal of Honor. General MacArthur mobilized, trained and led the Army in the defense of the Philippines against an invading Jap Army of overwhelming superiority in men and arms. The success of the Philippine and U.S. Troops in delaying the Jap advance was considered a result of MacArthur's leadership and his disregard of personal danger. #wwii #worldwarii #MacArthur #medalofhonor #memorialday #memorialdayweekend #greatmen #Army #usarmy #historyinpictures #portraits #portraitart #wararchives #warart #historicalarchives #patriots #american #america #ushistory

Today for Asian American/Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we’re looking at Sergeant Jose Calugas! Born in the Philippines in 1907, Jose Calugas joined the Philippine Scouts at age 23 and was sent to Camp Sill, Oklahoma for training. After basic and artillery training, he was assigned to the 24th Artillery Regiment of the Philippine Scouts and returned to the Philippines with his unit. After the United States entered World War Two, Calugas was fighting at one of the northernmost lines when his regiment was attacked in January 1942. When one of the American battery gun positions was put out of commission by enemy fire, he voluntarily raced across the battlefield to the gun position and organized volunteers to restore it. His bravery and initiative earned him the Medal of Honor, making him the first Filipino American recipient of the Medal in World War Two. Calugas did not receive his medal until 1945. The Japanese continued to advance across the Philippines, and when the Americans surrendered Bataan in April 1942, Calugas and the rest of the troops were forced on the Bataan Death March. He spent almost eight months as a POW until he was released to work in a rice mill. He then escaped and joined a Philippine guerilla unit and continued to fight against the occupation of his home until the Americans returned to liberate the Philippines in January 1945. Jose Calugas served as part of the occupation force in Okinawa after the war, and during this time he completed his US citizenship requirements. He retired from the Army in 1957as a Captain. Honoring the life, service and ultimate sacrifice of United States Navy Hospital Corpsman Second Class David Robert “Bobby” Ray, who gave his life during the Vietnam War while serving with an artillery battery of the United States Marine Corps. His heroism and devotion to duty were recognized with the Medal of Honor, awarded posthumously for his actions on March 19th, 1969. Ray was born on February 14th, 1945, in McMinnville, Tennessee and joined the Navy in 1966. In May 1968, Ray requested a tour of duty and on July 12, was deployed to Vietnam. On the day of Ray’s death, his command post was attacked by a battalion of People’s Army Of Vietnam (PAVN) soldiers. During the attack, Ray moved from parapet to parapet rendering medical aid to his fellow Marines and was seriously wounded. He then had to confront two PAVN soldiers attacking his position and refused to be aided by his fellow corpsman and continued his life-saving efforts under enemy fire. After he had ran out of ammunition, Ray’s final act of heroism came when he threw his body upon a wounded Marine after he saw a grenade land near them. Ray died in the blast while the Marine he sacrificed his life for, lived. He was laid to rest with full military honors here at Mountain View Cemetery in McMinnville, Tennessee. Today, we pay tribute to this true American hero who gave all so that we may enjoy the freedoms we have today. “ Brave hearts bright stars “ My father wanted to serve his country during World War 2 . As the story goes he was turned down several times and to this day I am not exactly sure why . Finally dad was able to enlist in the Army Air Corp ( not the Air Force as I mistakenly said yesterday) He was stationed in “The Azores “ and earned the rank of staff Sargent . I still have his uniform. I am sure that my Dad’s bravest act was to try . For that brave action he always had my utmost respect. Sharing dad’s pictures , a patriotic plaque I found and displayed on our door after September 11, thrifted rusty star , my great grandfather’s union medal, and my great aunt’s school bell . Georgia native, Ralph Puckett Jr. graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point and received his commission as an Infantry Officer in 1949. Though offered a medical discharge for his wounds, Puckett refused and continued to serve on active duty at assignments that included the U.S. Army Ranger School and West Point. As a Ranger advisor to the Columbian Army, Puckett established the prestigious Escuela de Lanceros program. Later, after completing Special Forces training in 1960, Puckett commanded B and C teams in the 10th Special Forces Group in Bad Tolz, Germany. Retiring in 1971, he became the national programs coordinator of Outward Bound, Inc., and subsequently established Discovery, Inc., a leadership and teamwork development program that focused on “Personal Growth through Safe Adventure.” In 1992, he was an inaugural inductee into the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame and, from 1996 to 2006, he served as the first honorary colonel of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Other honors followed, including an appointment as an ambassador of goodwill by the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, selection as a 2004 distinguished graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, and being chosen as a 2007 recipient of the Infantry’s Doughboy Award. For his heroic actions while serving then as commander of the Eighth Army Ranger Company when his company of 57 Rangers was attacked by Chinese forces at Hill 205 near the Chongchon River, during the Korean Conflict on November 25-26, 1950, Puckett received the Medal of Honor on May 21, 2021. On April 8, 2024, he sadly passed away at his home in Columbus, Georgia, at the age of 97. 💚 💪 This post is dedicated to Girl Scout Cora from Troop 8744 of Traverse City, who has been awarded The Medal of Honor. This recognition is granted to Girl Scouts who demonstrate bravery by either saving a life or attempting to do so, without endangering their own. While on the bus heading home from school, Cora's brother, Clayton, experienced anaphylactic shock. Despite not having an epi-pen on hand, Cora recognized Clayton's reaction and alerted the bus driver. The bus driver promptly informed Cora's mother; hence, upon reaching home, Cora's mother was able to administer an epi-pen to Clayton, providing him with necessary treatment. 💛 Cora not only saved a life, but serves as an example to all Girl Scouts—way-to-go Cora! 💛 #GSMISTS #GirlScouts #MedalOfHonor #BraveryAward #GirlPower #InspiringYouth @girlscouts

May 21, 1969⠀ Specialist Four Santiago J. Erevia distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a radio telephone operator in Company C, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 501st Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) during search and clear mission near Tam Ky. ⠀ ⠀ After breaching an insurgent perimeter, Specialist Four Erevia was designated by his platoon leader to render first aid to several casualties, and the rest of the platoon moved forward. As he was doing so, he came under intense hostile fire from four bunkers to his left front. Although he could have taken cover with the rest of the element, he chose a retaliatory course of action. With heavy enemy fire directed at him, he moved in full view of the hostile gunners as he proceeded to crawl from one wounded man to another, gathering ammunition. ⠀ ⠀ Armed with two M-16 rifles and several hand grenades, he charged toward the enemy positions behind the suppressive fire of the two rifles. Under very intense fire, he continued to advance on the insurgents until he was near the first bunker. Disregarding the enemy fire, he pulled the pin from a hand grenade and advanced on the bunker, leveling suppressive fire until he could drop the grenade into the bunker, mortally wounding the insurgent and destroying the fortification. Without hesitation, he employed identical tactics as he proceeded to eliminate the next two enemy positions. With the destruction of the third bunker, Specialist Four Erevia had exhausted his supply of hand grenades. Still under intense fire from the fourth position, he courageously charged forward behind the fire emitted by his M-16 rifles. ⠀ ⠀ Arriving at the very edge of the bunker, he silenced the occupant within the fortification at point blank range. Through his heroic actions the lives of the wounded were saved and the members of the Company Command Post were relieved from a very precarious situation. ⠀ ⠀ #valorveterans #vietnamwar #vietnamveterans #ThisDayInHistory #medalofhonor

On this date in 2021, retired Colonel Ralph Puckett Jr. was awarded the Medal of Honor from President Joe Biden for his actions in the Korean War. On November 25, 1950, Puckett and his company captured Hill 205, a strategic point overlooking the Chongchon River, as part of the Battle of the Ch’ongch’on River. Puckett led the Rangers during the attack, shouted words of encouragement and got supporting fire from the closest tank. When a platoon was pinned down, he ran across an open area three times to draw enemy fire, which allowed the Rangers to locate and destroy the enemy positions and to seize Hill 205. After capturing the hill, the Ranger company was over a mile from the nearest friendly unit. Puckett coordinated artillery support prior to the Chinese counterattack. At 10pm, the Chinese began their attack by firing a mortar salvo against the Rangers. Six waves of Chinese forces assaulted the hill, with the first five waves attacking the hill for four hours. The Rangers were outnumbered 10-to-1. Several times, Puckett was forced to call in “danger close” artillery fire. During the sixth assault, the Rangers were overrun in hand-to-hand combat. There was a lack of artillery support due to Chinese attacks throughout the American lines. Puckett, who had previously suffered a thigh wound, incurred several wounds to his feet, buttocks, and an arm when two mortars landed in his fox hole. After his wounds immobilized him, Puckett ordered his Rangers to leave him behind and abandon the position. Two of the Rangers, David Pollock and Billy Walls, ignored his orders, shot three Chinese soldiers who were yards from Puckett’s fox hole, and evacuated Puckett from the hill. After he was evacuated, Puckett was able to call for artillery fire to hit the hill. He was hospitalized for 11 months due to the wounds he suffered that night. Puckett was initially awarded a Distinguished Service Cross before it was upgraded to a Medal of Honor three years ago today. Pollock and Walls received the Silver Star for gallantry. #medalofhonor #weremember #hero #valor #ranger #RLTW #MOH #armyhistory #army #rangerregiment #koreanwar

May 21, 1966⠀ Six members of the platoon were killed instantly and a number were wounded, including the platoon leader. Sgt. Dolby's every move brought fire from the enemy. However, aware that the platoon leader was critically wounded, and that the platoon was in a precarious situation, Sgt. Dolby moved the wounded men to safety and deployed the remainder of the platoon to engage the enemy. ⠀ ⠀ Subsequently, his dying platoon leader ordered Sgt. Dolby to withdraw the forward elements to rejoin the platoon. Despite the continuing intense enemy fire and with utter disregard for his own safety, Sgt. Dolby positioned abled-bodied men to cover the withdrawal of the forward elements, assisted the wounded to the new position, and he, alone, attacked enemy positions until his ammunition was expended. ⠀ ⠀ Replenishing his ammunition, he returned to the area of most intense action, singlehandedly killed three enemy machine gunners, and neutralized the enemy fire, thus enabling friendly elements on the flank to advance on the enemy redoubt. He defied the enemy fire to personally carry a seriously wounded soldier to safety where he could be treated and, returning to the forward area, he crawled through withering fire to within 50 meters of the enemy bunkers and threw smoke grenades to mark them for air strikes. ⠀ ⠀ Although repeatedly under fire at close range from enemy snipers and automatic weapons, Sgt. Dolby directed artillery fire on the enemy and succeeded in silencing several enemy weapons. He remained in his exposed location until his comrades had displaced to more secure positions. His actions of unsurpassed valor during four hours of intense combat were a source of inspiration to his entire company, contributed significantly to the success of the overall assault on the enemy position, and were directly responsible for saving the lives of a number of his fellow soldiers.

THE LAST PATROL FOR DOSS: May 21, 1945, marks 79 years since Desmond Doss was injured by a grenade in a night attack near Chocolate Drop, more than a mile past Hacksaw Ridge. U.S. Army Pfc. Desmond T. Doss and two other soldiers were in a foxhole when a grenade landed among them. The other men scrambled out, but Desmond was too late. Instinctively he covered the grenade with his boot, but it detonated and hurled his body into the night. Rather than call for another medic to risk his own life, Desmond bandaged his own wounds and waited five hours alone until morning. As the litter bearers began to carry him out, they passed a more critically wounded soldier. He asked them to put him down, rolled off the litter and told them to take the other man. While waiting for their return, Desmond and another wounded soldier set out together. Desmond was struck in his arm by a sniper’s bullet. He used a rifle as a splint for his useless arm, and the two continued to crawl to safety. -Redemption at Hacksaw Ridge May 21 marks the end of the war for Pfc. Desmond Doss. For his wounds, Doss received 3 Purple Hearts. 🇺🇸 To learn more about Desmond Doss, his life, and the new video education series EDUSODES, please visit 👉 DesmondDossFoundation.org #DesmondDoss #MedalOfHonor #MOH #OnThisDay #History #LiveLikeDoss #HacksawRidge #Okinawa #WWII #DesmondDoss #DesmondDossFoundation #Edusodes

#realheroesmonday would like to remember Navy Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Christopher J. Chambers. Chambers was one of the two US Navy SEALs that went missing in the Arabian Sea in January during a raid on a boat carrying illicit Iranian-made weapons to Yemen. The two were lost in the rolling high seas off the coast of Somalia. The rescue mission was called off and the SEALs were considered deceased. Both men were assigned to SEAL Team 3 at the time of their passing. “Chambers enlisted in the Navy on May 17, 2012, and graduated from boot camp at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois, in July 2012, after which he served with West Coast-based SEAL units since graduating in 2014 from SEAL qualification training in Coronado, California. As part of Jewish American Heritage Month, we remember Army Captain Ben L. Salomon, one of only three dental officers to receive the Medal of Honor. Salomon, who studied at the @uscdentistry, was honored for his heroic service at the Battle of Saipan in 1944. While serving as the Surgeon for the 2nd Battalion, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division, Salomon faced an attack by a large group of Japanese soldiers. As the wounded filled his aid station, he took up arms to defend them. When the station was overrun, Salomon ordered the wounded to evacuate and bravely held off the enemy until they were safe. He was killed by the enemy during combat. After his sacrifice, 98 enemy soldiers were found dead in front of his position. It took decades for Salomon's Medal of Honor to be approved. Officials from the USC Dental School were instrumental in gaining approval for the Medal. A replica of Salomon's Medal of Honor is displayed at the school. Sgt. Emanuel Stance of the 9th Cavalry was the first African American soldier to be awarded the Medal of Honor in the post-Civil War era. Stance was born into slavery in 1844. He enlisted in the 9th Cavalry on October 2, 1866, with 50 other men in Lake Providence, Louisiana. When Stance enlisted he could read and write, which made him an advantage; many formerly enslaved men were illiterate because of laws prohibiting them from instruction. He was promoted to sergeant in March 1867. Stance was stationed at Fort Davis in Texas with F Troop, where he grew as a leader and oversaw a detachment of troopers working in the Quartermaster Department. He took his skills to the field in September, leading 8 troopers on a patrol leaving from Fort Davis. Throughout 1869, Stance participated in numerous armed encounters with American Indians. At the end of 1869, Stance and the other members of F Troop moved from Fort Davis to Fort McKavett. On May 20, 1870, Captain Henry Carroll, the officer in charge of F Troop, learned that Apache Indians had abducted two young boys four days earlier about 40 miles east of Fort McKavett. Carroll sent Stance with a 10 men to Kickapoo Springs to search for the boys and apprehend the kidnappers. 14 miles from Fort McKavett, Stance and his detachment encountered a small group of Apaches. After a skirmish, the Apaches fled into the mountains. The troopers secured their horses and continued onto Kickapoo Springs to guard the region’s mail and stage route. During the skirmish the Apaches released one of the kidnapped boys, Willie Lehman. Willie arrived at the sub-post the next day, bruised, cold, and very hungry. He was eventually reunited with his family. His brother, Herman, remained with his captors until 1878, when he arrived with a group of Comanche Indians at Fort Sill, in present-day Oklahoma. For his actions during the March 1870 mission, Stance received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military award, on June 20, 1870. The accompanying citation read, “Gallantry on scout after Indians.” #buffalosoldiers #fortmckavett #fortmckavettshs #medalofhonor #blacksoldiers #indianwars #texasfortrail #texasstateparks #texasparksandwildlife

May 20, 1967⠀ Pfc. Bellrichard was with four fellow soldiers in a foxhole on their unit's perimeter when the position came under a massive enemy attack. Following a 30-minute mortar barrage, the enemy launched a strong ground assault. Pfc. Bellrichard rose in face of a group of charging enemy soldiers and threw hand grenades into their midst, eliminating several of the foe and forcing the remainder to withdraw. ⠀ ⠀ Failing in their initial attack, the enemy repeated the mortar and rocket bombardment of the friendly perimeter, then once again charged against the defenders in a concerted effort to overrun the position. Pfc. Bellrichard resumed throwing hand grenades at the onrushing attackers. As he was about to hurl a grenade, a mortar round exploded just in front of his position, knocking him into the foxhole and causing him to lose his grip on the already armed grenade. ⠀ ⠀ Recovering instantly, Pfc. Bellrichard recognized the threat to the lives of his four comrades and threw himself upon the grenade, shielding his companions from the blast that followed. Although seriously wounded, Pfc. Bellrichard struggled into an upright position in the foxhole and fired his rifle at the enemy until he succumbed to his wounds. ⠀ ⠀ #valorveterans #vietnamwar #vietnamveterans #ThisDayInHistory #medalofhonor

#MedalOfHonor Monday! On this day in 1967, a hero engages in an action that would earn him the Medal of Honor. S/Sgt. Frankie Molnar was on his 2nd tour of duty in Vietnam on May 20, 1967. The enemy had launched an attack on the battalion’s defensive perimeter: It unfortunately proved to be the beginning of a longer nighttime attack. Molnar leapt into action. He was a squad leader, and it was his duty. “As he crawled through the position,” his Medal citation later described, “he discovered a group of enemy soldiers closing in on his squad area. His accurate rifle fire killed five of the enemy and forced the remainder to flee.” The initial attack had largely been composed of mortar fire, but now another “human wave” started. Molnar was all over the place. His Medal citation describes him making daring dashes for ammunition, distributing it to his men, supporting their counterattacks, and tending to the wounded. He was trying to move a badly wounded soldier with the help of several others when the enemy threw a grenade straight toward the small group. Molnar was the first to see the grenade, and he promptly threw himself upon it. He did not survive the move, but he did protect those around him. “It’s pretty much what I would have expected of him,” First Lieutenant Larry Rodabaugh later said. “He was an outstanding squad leader, and he was a really good soldier.” Captain Robert Sholly concurred, noting that Molnar “could have gone to Canada while on leave and stayed there until the war was over, like some did, but his family obviously had standards and raised him to be true to himself.” Molnar posthumously received a Medal in July 1969. His family was understandably proud. “We draw comfort,” his brother said, “from the thought that his actions may have spared other families . . . . Frankie’s smile and laughter will always be with us as we pass all of our fond memories of him on to our children.” FULL STORY: TaraRoss.com #tdih #otd #history #SharetheHistory

May 20, 1967⠀ S/Sgt. Molnar distinguished himself while serving as a squad leader with Company B, during combat operations. Shortly after the battalion's defensive perimeter was established, it was hit by intense mortar fire as the prelude to a massive enemy night attack. ⠀ ⠀ S/Sgt. Molnar immediately left his sheltered location to insure the readiness of his squad to meet the attack. As he crawled through the position, he discovered a group of enemy soldiers closing in on his squad area. His accurate rifle fire killed five of the enemy and forced the remainder to flee. When the mortar fire stopped, the enemy attacked in a human wave supported by grenades, rockets, automatic-weapons, and small-arms fire. After assisting to repel the first enemy assault, S/Sgt. Molnar found that his squad's ammunition and grenade supply were nearly expended. ⠀ ⠀ Again leaving the relative safety of his position, he crawled through intense enemy fire to secure additional ammunition and distribute it to his squad. He rejoined his men to beat back the renewed enemy onslaught, and he moved about his area providing medical aid and assisting in the evacuation of the wounded. ⠀ ⠀ With the help of several men, he was preparing to move a severely wounded soldier when an enemy hand grenade was thrown into the group. The first to see the grenade, S/Sgt. Molnar threw himself on it and absorbed the deadly blast to save his comrades.

- MoH Monday #26 James E Engle - May 18, 1864 James Edgar was the 21 year old 1st Sgt from Co I, 97th Penn Inf apart of Gen Butler’s Army of the James who was stuck in their Bermuda Hundred Line after being stalled by Gen PGT Beauregard. James had only joined the 97th in Feb 1864, a few months prior. He originally served in the 153rd Penn, being wounded and captured at Chancellorsville the year prior. James and the 97th was now in a reserve position with the 8th Maine in the entrenchments to their front. In the morning hours Beauregard sent in three regt’s who quickly advanced on the Mainers and forced them from their works around the Foster Plantation. With the federal line in jeopardy the 97th was rushed in to retake the lost works. Their attack worked but the rebels took cover in the ravines and buildings of the farm below and began laying a heavy fire back on the 97th. As the fight wore on, ammunition began to run out. Due to the precariousness of their position, ammunition couldn’t be readily brought up in a safe manner. Col Guss called for volunteers to run for supplies. Sgt Engle along side regt’l musician John Parson Jr and several others volunteered for the dangerous task. They were handed gum blankets and were forced to crawl to the rear to have ammo poured into the blankets and crawl back to the men pinned down in the works. The men, covered in dirt, blood, and powder, crawled back and forth for nearly nine hours. Exposing even the slightest bit of yourself could be deadly. Parsons was mortally wounded while Sergeant Engle received wounds to his face, body, and left arm which was amputated once he was ordered to retire to the rear upon his refusal to leave. Upon his recovery in Aug he was assigned to Co E, 16th Reg’t VRC as a 1st Lt and breveted Cpt. After the war he worked as a clerk in the Pension Office in DC until his death on Nov 19, 1897. He is buried in Section One at Arlington Nat’l Cemetery. On Dec 17, 1896 he was awarded the MoH for his actions and bravery on May 18, 1864. #medalofhonor #moh #medalofhonormonday #honor #arlington #pennsylvania #gettysburgguard #bermudahundred

#OTD in 1967, Leslie A. Bellrichard earned the #MedalofHonor during the Vietnam War. Positioned in a foxhole with four other men, Bellrichard faced a heavy mortar barrage, after which North Vietnamese soldiers launched a ground assault. Undaunted, he stood firing and throwing grenades at the enemy. Just as he was about to throw another grenade, however, a mortar shell exploded nearby, throwing him back and knocking the live grenade to the ground. To save the lives of his friends, Bellrichard threw himself on the grenade. Mortally wounded, he nevertheless kept fighting for several minutes before succumbing to his injuries. His wife accepted his #MoH on his behalf in 1969. https://mohmuseum.org/medal_of_honor/leslie-bellrichard/

Florence Finch (1915–2016) was a Filipino-American who worked for the resistance against the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during WWII. Florence risked her life to divert fuel from the Japanese army, supplying the Filipino resistance and buying food and medicine on the black market for POWs. In 1944, Florence was arrested by Japanese authorities and endured confinement and torture. After her liberation in 1945, she moved to the U.S. and enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard for a year. In 1955, she came to Ithaca, where she stayed for the rest of her life, raising two children and working in Cornell’s Southeast Asia program. Florence was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific campaign ribbon in 1945, the first woman to receive the honor, as well as the Medal of Freedom in 1947, and in 1995 the Coast Guard named their Pacific headquarters building in Hawaii after her. 19-YEAR OLD ‘AUDIE MURPHY’ FOUGHT 250 GERMANS WITH TANKS ALONE. On January 26, 1945, a 19-year old 2nd Lt. Audie L. Murphy leading the 15th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division faced a formidable enemy force of six German tanks and numerous infantrymen near the French village of Holtzwihr. At that time, he made the decisive call to order his men to retreat to defensive positions in nearby woods while he provided cover fire and called for artillery support to stop the German advance. In the middle of the combat, an American tank destroyer nearby was struck by enemy fire and consumed in flames. Murphy climbed atop the burning tank destroyer manning its .50 caliber machine gun to engage the enemy forces. The brave Murphy exposed himself risking his life fighting against the German forces. Despite facing a leg injury, he still neutralized over 50 German soldiers effectively halting their assault for almost an hour. At the age of 19, with his act of bravery, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on April 23, 1945. However, this was not the first instance of Murphy’s valor. Prior to his Medal of Honor, he had accumulated a distinguished record of over 20 awards for gallantry including the Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Star medals and two Bronze Star medals for his courageous deeds in Italy and France. Following the award of the Medal of Honor, Murphy gained widespread acclaim as the most decorated American soldier of World War II. #AudieMurphy #WWIIHero #MedalofHonor

May 18,1968⠀ Sp4c. Guenette distinguished himself serving as a machine gunner with Company D, during combat operations. While Sp4c. Guenette's platoon was sweeping a suspected enemy base camp, it came under light harassing fire from a well-equipped and firmly entrenched squad of North Vietnamese Army regulars which was serving as a delaying force at the entrance to their base camp. As the platoon moved within 10 meters of the fortified positions, the enemy fire became intense. Sp4c. Guenette and his assistant gunner immediately began to provide a base of suppressive fire, ceasing momentarily to allow the assistant gunner time to throw a grenade into the bunker. Seconds later, an enemy grenade was thrown to Sp4c. Guenette's right flank. Realizing that the grenade would kill or wound at least four men and destroy the machine gun, he shouted a warning and smothered the grenade with his body, absorbing its blast. ⠀ ⠀ #valorveterans #vietnamwar #vietnamveterans #ThisDayInHistory #medalofhonor

May 18, 1967⠀ Sp4c. Wayrynen distinguished himself with Company B, during combat operations near Duc Pho. His platoon was assisting in the night evacuation of the wounded from an early enemy contact when the leadman of the unit met face to face with a Viet Cong soldier. ⠀ ⠀ The American's shouted warning also alerted the enemy who immediately swept the area with automatic-weapons fire from a strongly built bunker close to the trail and threw hand grenades from another nearby fortified position. Almost immediately, the leadman was wounded and knocked from his feet. Sp4c. Wayrynen, the second man in the formation, leaped beyond his fallen comrade to kill another enemy soldier who appeared on the trail, and he dragged his injured companion back to where the point squad had taken cover. ⠀ ⠀ Suddenly, a live enemy grenade landed in the center of the tightly grouped men. Sp4c. Wayrynen, quickly assessing the danger to the entire squad as well as to his platoon leader who was nearby, shouted a warning, pushed one soldier out of the way, and threw himself on the grenade at the moment it exploded. He was mortally wounded. ⠀ ⠀ #valorveterans #vietnamwar #vietnamveterans #ThisDayInHistory #medalofhonor

May 18, 1967⠀ P/Sgt. Grandstaff distinguished himself while leading the Weapons Platoon, Company B, on a reconnaissance mission near the Cambodian border. His platoon was advancing through intermittent enemy contact when it was struck by heavy small-arms and automatic-weapons fire from three sides. As he established a defensive perimeter, P/Sgt. Grandstaff noted that several of his men had been struck down. ⠀ ⠀ He raced 30 meters through the intense fire to aid them but could only save one. Denied freedom to maneuver his unit by the intensity of the enemy onslaught, he adjusted artillery to within 45 meters of his position. When helicopter gunships arrived, he crawled outside the defensive position to mark the location with smoke grenades. Realizing his first marker was probably ineffective, he crawled to another location and threw his last smoke grenade but the smoke did not penetrate the jungle foliage. Seriously wounded in the leg during this effort he returned to his radio and, refusing medical aid, adjusted the artillery even closer as the enemy advanced on his position. ⠀ ⠀ Recognizing the need for additional firepower, he again braved the enemy fusillade, crawled to the edge of his position, and fired several magazines of tracer ammunition through the jungle canopy. He succeeded in designating the location to the gunships but this action again drew the enemy fire and he was wounded in the other leg. Now enduring intense pain and bleeding profusely, he crawled to within 10 meters of an enemy machine gun which had caused many casualties among his men. He destroyed the position with hand grenades but received additional wounds. Rallying his remaining men to withstand the enemy assaults, he realized his position was being overrun and asked for artillery directly on his location. He fought until mortally wounded by an enemy rocket. ⠀ ⠀ Although every man in the platoon was a casualty, survivors attest to the indomitable spirit and exceptional courage of this outstanding combat leader who inspired his men to fight courageously against overwhelming odds and cost the enemy heavy casualties.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ https://bit.ly/3V1QrDu

May 18, 1966⠀ S/Sgt. Stewart became a lone defender of vital terrain[--virtually one man against a hostile platoon. Refusing to take advantage of a lull in the firing which would have permitted him to withdraw, S/Sgt. Stewart elected to hold his ground to protect his fallen comrades and prevent an enemy penetration of the company perimeter. ⠀ ⠀ As the full force of the platoon-sized attack struck his lone position, he fought like a man possessed; emptying magazine after magazine at the determined, on charging enemy. The enemy drove almost to his position and hurled grenades, but S/Sgt. Stewart decimated them by retrieving and throwing the grenades back. Exhausting his ammunition, he crawled, under intense fire, to his wounded team members and collected ammunition that they were unable to use. Far past the normal point of exhaustion, he held his position for four harrowing hours and through three assaults, annihilating the enemy as they approached and before they could get a foothold. ⠀ ⠀ As a result of his defense, the company position held until the arrival of a reinforcing platoon which counterattacked the enemy, now occupying foxholes to the left of S/Sgt. Stewart's position. After the counterattack, his body was found in a shallow enemy hole where he had advanced in order to add his fire to that of the counterattacking platoon. Eight enemy dead were found around his immediate position, with evidence that 15 others had been dragged away. The wounded whom he gave his life to protect were recovered and evacuated.⠀
