Lunar New Year 🧧🐉🥮🏮🐉🧧 Happy Year of the Dragon. In the Chinese culture, the dragon represents good luck, strength, health and also Yang energy. The dragon is unique in the zodiac because it is the only mythical creature of all the animals and babies are born in the year of the dragon more than any other animal. An excerpt from the story of how the dragon came to be the fifth animal of the zodiac: “Just then a kind dragon swooped down to take fifth place. ‘Why didn’t you win the race, as you can fly as well as swim?’ the Jade Emperor asked. ‘I was held up because some people and animals needed water to drink. I needed to make some rain,’ the dragon explained. ‘Then when I was nearly here I saw a poor little rabbit on a log in the water and I blew a puff of wind so that the log would float to the river bank.’” The dragon is a creature that cares more about the collective and taking care of each other than itself. This year’s wood dragon is also in line with the astrological placement of Aquarius in Pluto. Aquarius is also a planet that is humanitarian and revolutionary. The events leading up to this year have been no coincidence at all. It is time to start caring more about others and how we all exist with each other in this world. This year I wanted to kick off #AAPImonth with something that is important to me: breaking stereotypes and learning truths. In the US we have been taught to center race and stereotypes for understanding cultures and people. We are taught that race exists, diluting the fabric of what is known about culture. Since a lot of my cultural knowledge around my identity has been self guided, I wanted to share some of the beginning stories with you all to provide context of what it’s like to grow up mixed in the US. It wasn’t until high school where I put together that I was technically “half” Asian (the language I used at that time). I would tell my friends and significant other (who happened to also be mixed Asian as well) that technically I am also half Asian. I was excited and secretly proud of this realization (secretly because I was taught not to share that I am Afghan with others nor was it ever really discussed once we moved to OC). I was excited for this realization because I longed to fit in and belong. I wanted to feel connected to others. However, this was not my experience. I was met with several laughs, comments, and reactions that made it feel even more isolating as a mixed person. I was not supported, becoming even more silent in who I really was. I don’t blame others for not knowing or understanding. I haven’t even been aware of these understandings until more recently in my life. But it is important! Our ideas of what something is shape how we see things and the actions we decide to take. So, although I will not be posting every day and hold myself to this standard (unlearning perfectionism/high achieving tendencies which also comes from my cultural experience) here are a few images of me and my Central Asian American diaspora family. I hope to create a few posts on contributions within the mental health field from my community. When you think about AAPI month, would you ever have considered that Asian can look like me too? 🇦🇫

Who remembers this quote from @saweetie ? "I definitely felt out of place at times because the cultures that I was raised around were completely night and day. But I feel like those [types] of internal struggles help me understand people better, and I now know that not one set of people is the same." For many mixed race folx, growing up in multiple cultures, that at times seem so different from one another, can be quite confusing and lead to identity crisis. Although it is difficult to experience the in-between, and the trauma that can very much come from it, just knowing you are not alone can be helpful.
