TODAY IN LABOR HISTORY: On May 13th 1985, Philadelphia became known as “The City That Bombed Itself.” Today marks 36 years since the Philadelphia police dropped a bomb on a West Philly neighborhood, specifically on the house of a Black liberation group called MOVE, killing 11 members, including 5 children, destroying 61 homes and leaving 250 people homeless. On the day of the bombing, the police were sent to the MOVE house to execute arrest warrants for several members. When those inside the house refused to respond, the authorities decided to take extreme measures. They somehow justified the use of military grade weapons, despite their knowledge of children on the premises. 500 police officers shot 10,000 rounds of ammo with automatic weapons at the house. The police commissioner then ordered to bomb the house, with a helicopter dropping a satchel bomb, a demolition device typically used in combat, onto the roof. After detonation, officials let the fire spread throughout the neighborhood.

I was just 2 years old in 1985 when the MOVE organization members were bombed in Philadelphia. This horrific event resulted in the deaths of 11 people, including 5 innocent children. It's heartbreaking to think about the lives lost and the devastation caused by that bombing. The responsibility for the bombing lies with the Philadelphia Police Department. They carried out the bombing during an attempt to evict the MOVE members from their compound in the Powelton Village neighborhood of West Philadelphia. The decision to drop the bomb on the MOVE house led to a tragic chain of events that resulted in the loss of so many lives, including those of young children. The decision to authorize the police department's actions, including the bombing of the MOVE organization's compound in 1985, was made by Philadelphia city officials, particularly then-Mayor Wilson Goode. Mayor Goode and other city officials were involved in the planning and execution of the operation to evict the MOVE members from their property, which ultimately led to the tragic bombing and loss of life. This tragic incident raises important questions about police tactics, the use of force, and how law enforcement agencies handle confrontations with radical groups. 6307. “It’s horrible because it takes you out of life.” - Kelly Harris is keenly aware of the impact of cancer having gone through it herself; but for the last 20+ years, she’s been breathing life back into others. - Originally from Lansdale, PA, she went to school for Psychology & Social Work and afterwards became the director of an international adoption agency. Kelly traveled 26 weeks a year to places like Russia and China, and often got sick from her adventures. But one week in her 30s, she felt particularly ill and ended up seeing a hematologist. - The next day she got a call asking if she could be at @pennmedicine within the hour. If not, they were going to send a helicopter to get her. Kelly made it to the hospital and was diagnosed with leukemia with a grim outlook. Yet after 2 long inpatient stays and 3 years of recovery, she made it through. - Kelly went back into social work and eventually made her way to @cscphilly where she’s since worked her way up from programming director to fundraising director to CEO! More importantly, she’s helped countless other individuals (over 2,000 per year) with their own cancer experiences. - Through CSC, Kelly helps provide free social & emotional support to people whose lives have been affected by cancer (patients, family members, etc.). From camps for kids to educational sessions with doctors to peer support groups, they host ~125 events per month, giving people the gifts of community and belonging. - Kelly and her team work with people all the way from their diagnosis well into their survivorship, showing them they’re not alone in their fears and uncertainties. For some people, CSC has become the place where they found their future spouse, for others it’s been the source of friendships that have kept them going, and for Kelly it’s been her way to give back - using her experience to provide comfort and relief for others!
