Monday is for History! Did you know that Hawley had it's own private hospital over a decade before Wayne Memorial was built in Honesdale? It was rumored to have been located in the home of Dr. Fritts and records have it established around 1904 - possibly located at 520 Church Street. The earliest known record is in 1904 when The Honesdale Citizen Paper, reported it to have the requirements of a modern hospital with three patients being treated there. Eventually Dr. Fritts sold his hospital to Dr. Catterall and from there the trail was lost with the exception of knowing Dr. Catterall did practice in Hawley after the purchase. Possibly from his own home and he had moved a few times throughout the borough. While it's unknown if the hospital had beds at the time (picture shown is not of the Hawley Hospital), we do know that operations occurred there and treatments were given. It was very common for patients to be treated for many ailments in their own home or a quick visit to the hospital then returning back home. This little guy was foraging on the ground this morning and because I don't normally see my purple finches foraging, I had a feeling he couldn't fly. So I went to him and I was able to just pick him up and after sitting with him for a couple of minutes, I set him on my leg and he didn't even try to get away. AND THEN HE FELL ASLEEP. IT WAS THE SWEETEST THING. When he woke up, I gave him some droplets of water off my finger and put him in a box with some nesting material from my yard, dryer lint, and black oil sunflower seeds (the latter of which he promptly tore into) while l tried to find someone to help him. Thankfully, I found the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Saylorsburg, PA, and they were happy to have me bring him there. I know it's absolutely for the best, but I'd be lying if I said dropping him off there this evening was easy. I just love my finches so much. The community of Milford has had a long history of pulling together in the name of what’s right for the town! We at SSF wanted to take a moment to congratulate all the souls over at “Water Not Warehouse” and its supporters that put in countless hours of work to hold off the proposed building of the 434,000-square-foot warehouse at the junction of Interstate 84 and Route 6. The warehouse would have sat directly on top of the Milford Aquifer and other watershed areas with the daily opportunity for pollutants to wash easily into our precious waterways amongst countless other horrors. If this warehouse proposal had been passed, our area would have been fundamentally changed in perpetuity and would have opened the door for other warehouse developers to build on adjacent lands. Thank you for giving Milford this win, and giving us the chance to rest easy knowing the quality of our drinking water is protected; something we should never take lightly. 🍃 As the Native American saying goes: “When the last tree has been cut down, the last fish caught, the last river poisoned, only then will we realize that one cannot eat money.” 🍃 We hope you’ll join in the effort to save the land at the other gateway to Milford from development as well. …to help clear the pathway to sustainable and regenerative solutions as we fight to do what’s right for the town of Milford once more.
