Paramount Stars on Parade: (1923-1928) An exotic, glamorous creature of stormy romances on and off the screen, Polish born Pola Negri (1897-1987) captured the imagination of fans around the world at the height of the roaring 20’s. Born of Russian nobility it was said at the time of the Russian revolution, her parents fled to Poland where she was born into poverty. Beginning as a ballerina, then the theater as a trained actress. Her success on stage got her noticed by the then thriving German film industry. She was invited to UFA and working Ernst Lubitsch became a star. By the end of WWI Germany was rivalling Hollywood as the centre of the film world so studios invited their competition to join them. Paramount invited Negri and Lubitsch to Hollywood where she became the first international star to be invited to Hollywood. Launched in epic fashion by Paramount, Negri typified what being a Hollywood star was all about in the 20’s. Living in a home modelled after the White House, in and out of high profile tempestuous romances with the 2 biggest male stars of the era Chaplin and Valentino, furs, jewels, low taxes and great wealth. Her films were dramatic spectacles often in period costume. “Bella Donna”, “The Cheat”, “The Spanish Dancer”, “Forbidden Paradise” with Director Lubitsch, a change of pace with a comedy “A Woman of the World” and again becoming more accessible to mainstream audiences as a peasant in “Hotel Imperial”. She was a Top 10 box-office star in 24. Her breakdown at Valentino’s funeral backfired with her audiences feeling it was inappropriate so her career in the final silent years went into decline. Marrying into European nobility she retired from film. In an unhappy marriage to a Count her break was short. A Hollywood sound comeback failed although her accent wasn’t the issue. She turned to the stage and then to Germany for her best remembered film role today “Mazurka”. Considered a classic today she remained in German cinema until the Nazi invasion brought her back to America. Negri would occasionally make films and turned down some. Remaining active by feeding the publics fascination with the mystic of Hollywood’s most exciting era.

Paramount Stars on Parade:1919-1926) No star of the silent era was more glittering, more glamourous or more movie star-like than legendary Gloria Swanson (1899-1983). At her height receiving 10,000 fan letters a week and the first star to earn $1M a year. She herself said “All they had to do was put my name on a marquee and watch the money roll in”. Her story was as incredible as her career. Discovered while touring a film studio she started as an extra at 14, then in comedy shorts with first husband Wallace Beery, then slapstick comedies for Mack Sennett. She became a major star with director Cecil B. DeMille in the hits “Don’t Change Your Husband”, “Male and Female”, “The Affairs of Anatol” with Wallace Reid, “Beyond the Rocks” with Valentino, “Her Gilded Cage”, “Zaza”, “Manhandled”. The hits were endless - 20 in a row - with audiences just coming to see what she would be wearing and equally dazzled by her off screen opulent life including marrying a French Marquis. She was a Top 10 Box-office star from 21, 23-25. Despite a phenomenal offer for her to stay at Paramount she wanted more control. After a disastrous start she hit with “Sadie Thompson” for which she received an Oscar nomination. Sound proved no problem for her with “The Trespasser” a smash and another nomination. The ill fated “Queen Kelly” never released was almost as interesting as her relationship with its producer Joseph Kennedy millionaire father of JFK. Her career slowed in the early 30’s so she moved to NYC where she started a patents and Inventions company, theater, painting and sculpting, TV and then in her greatest. Norma Desmond in Wilder’s “Sunset Boulevard” was so spectacular that audiences thought she was playing herself. This film noir look at Hollywood has never been topped. She was nominated again for an Oscar. More TV, more theater and an occasional film, notably playing herself (no one could better play Swanson than Swanson) in the smash disaster film “Airport 1975”. A star who looked and always lived like a movie star she remains one of the greatest of cinemas birth a century ago. As Norma Desmond once said “I am big, it’s the pictures that got small!”

Paramount Stars on Parade: (1915 -1922) Known as Wally to his myriad of fans, Wallace Reid (1891-1922), was one of cinemas first superstars, biggest heartthrobs of WWI who died tragically fighting his own personal war with drug addiction. From a show business family he followed in his fathers footsteps first on stage and then to film still in its infancy. He worked behind the scenes until it was obvious that this boyishly handsome all-American needed to be in front of the camera. Between 1910 and 1922 he would appear in over 200 films. His breakout role was in cinemas first true epic D.W Griffith’s “Birth of a Nation” as the blacksmith. Like the film he was a sensation. “Intolerance” followed and then a contract first at Universal where he met his future wife actress Dorothy Davenport and then Paramount where he achieved superstardom. Director C.B. DeMille said “Wally Reid was a 180-pound diamond”. This matinee idol often referred to as “the screen’s most perfect lover” loved speed and fast cars. Forgotten today and kept quiet at the time were scandals including speed and a fatal car crash, affairs and drink and ultimately drug addition. While on location and suffering severe injuries due to a train crash he was treated with morphine and it became his drug of choice. Paramount’s biggest box-office draw couldn’t stop working for long enough to stop the addiction so they fed it. His biggest films were “Carmen”, “The Affairs of Anatol”, “The Roaring Road”, “Double Speed”, “Excuse My Dust”, “Too Much Speed” and “The Ghost Breaker”.A Top 10 box-office star in 1917-1921. He was No.1 in 1919&20. Legendary director Henry Hathaway described Reid’s final day on set by saying “He sort of fumbled about, and bumped into a chair, and then just sat down onto the floor and started to cry. They put him in a chair, and he just keeled over. They sent for an ambulance and sent him to the hospital.” He died in a sanitarium with his wife describing to the press every detail. She would bring attention to the dangers of drug addiction. With modesty he once said “Just another so-and-so who never got into uniform except when he put on his greasepaint.” A tragic end to a young life.

Actress Norma Talmadge was born on May 2nd, 1897. She began appearing in silent films while in her teens and married exhibitor Joseph M. Schenck. Talmadge was a big box office attraction and considered one of the finest dramatic actresses of her time. She only made two sound films, but they proved unsuccessful and she retired from the screen. While her films are rarely shown, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival recently screened her 1925 drama “The Lady”. She is interred with her sisters in the Abbey of the Psalms at Hollywood Forever. #hollywoodforevercemetery #hollywoodforever #silentstars

This is a book I’ve wanted for awhile. I bought this recently as an impulse buy. The cover art featuring silent film vamp Pola Negri looking sort of dominatrix-y/Venus in Furs-esque is only one reason. This title, a novelization of the pre-Code Hollywood film A WOMAN COMMANDS, was published by Grosset & Dunlap, a great old publishing house that had cornered the market by publishing very well-made novelizations of popular silent and pre-Code movies. . Grosset & Dunlap titles from the 1920s are especially collectible. Their 1928 novelization of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, which contains stills from that legendary lost film, is a holy grail-type title from them; that one regularly sells for close to $1,000 USD. A WOMAN COMMANDS is not in that league of desirability but it’s still a neat title to own. The one I happened to get here is in pretty immaculate condition. . A WOMAN COMMANDS was one of several attempted American “comeback” films for silent film vamp Pola Negri. Her star had faded after her histrionic antics at Rudolf Valentino’s 1926 funeral. (She’d claimed Rudolf was the love of her life, had a large floral wreathe sent to be placed by his coffin that had “POLA” written on it, and loudly wailed and “fainted” multiple times before the cameras, during Valentino’s funeral proceedings.) The film of A WOMAN COMMANDS garnered Pola a minor hit with the song “Paradise,” which does have a Marlene Dietrich/Blue Angel cabaret feel to it. It was popularized by others over the years. The movie lets Negri play an imperious femme fatale—soomething for which she already had a reputation—with a character that has the suitably dominatrix-y name Madame Maria Draga. By this point in real life Negri was technically not only a Countess (1919), but by marrying “Prince” Serge Mdivani (who said he was royalty in exile in the US, from the USSR) in 1927 she also became a “Princess.” But that’s a whole different story. . . . #polanegri #grossetanddunlap #grosset&dunlap #sergemdivani #Marryingmdivanis #precodehollywood #vamps #vamp #femmefatale #precodestars #precodemovies #precodehollywoodstars #silentstars #silentfilms .

"Si puedo hacer reír a la gente, eso es todo lo que quiero hacer. La risa es la mejor medicina del mundo. Te saca las cosas del pecho. La gente dice que en mis películas me gusta poner algunas lágrimas entre las risas. Esa no es la idea en absoluto. Si puedo hacerles llorar con la belleza de una idea, eso es otra cosa. Y ese es mi objetivo." –Charles Chaplin. "If I can make people laugh, that's all I want to do. Laughter is the best medicine in all the world. It gets thing off your chest. Fighting Blood (1911) was probably Bobby’s first big role under Griffith’s direction. In this surviving film he plays the oldest son of a strict Civil War veteran. The two have a fight and the son leaves on horseback, but then discovers that American Indians are planning an attack. Bobby shows an eye-opening glimpse of intensity in his acting (and also surprisingly good horsemanship). Griffith must’ve been pleased, because he was then given the official lead in Bobby, the Coward (1911), playing opposite Florence LaBadie. #RobertHarron #FlorenceLaBadie #dwgriffith #SilentFilmStar #silentstar #silentstars #silentstars #BobbieHarron #FightingBlood #1911

PART 9 - THE EDWARDIAN BEAUTY: GIBSON GIRL During the 1910s, the Gibson Girl reached her pinnacle of popularity. Women were expected to be voluptuous, with a thin waist and legs, and wide, curvy hips. With the help of tightly-cinched corsets, their figures would often resemble the number "8" in order to accentuate their curviness. The Gibson Girl was the personification of the feminine ideal of physical attractiveness as portrayed by the pen-and-ink illustrations of artist Charles Dana Gibson during a 20-year period that spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the United States. The artist saw his creation as representing the composite of "thousands of American girls". Evelyn Nesbit (slide 2 and 4) was the prototype of her original Gibson Girl and often posed with the trademark hair and curls. In the 1910s, makeup was rapidly being introduced and used by many women. The word “makeup” was being used for the first time after it became popularized by Max Factor, who was the inventor of a foundation that was commonly used among Hollywood stars and was then spread to the general public. He sold his makeup claiming that it would make women look like their favorite actresses. Max Factor was a very influential person in the world of makeup as he not only came up with the word itself, but he also went on to create a brow pencil and lipgloss along with his greasepaint foundation. The eye makeup used during the 1910s was applied heavily and somewhat carelessly as opposed to modern day eye makeup application. Vogue started this trend when they featured models using henna to outline their eyes; Hollywood caught on very quickly and the “vamp” look was born. Prominent models of this look were Theda Bara and Pola Negri, both featured in slides 1 and 6 respectively. Although this look became popular after Vogue introduced it, it is important to keep in mind that makeup was still not fully accepted socially. Women often hid their makeup because of husbands or fathers who disapproved of it. . . . #redvinyl #gibsongirl #thedabara #hollywood #classichollywood #beautystandards #evelynnesbit #polanegri #silentfilms #silentstars
