1220/ I is for : In The Maze Of Kadath – CATACOMB – 1993. Unless you’re an old French metalhead, you’ve probably never heard of Catacomb, who were, in the early 90s, a Death Metal act from the French Riviera. Even in the French scene, Catacomb never made it big, but they were known and respected in the underground. After two demos (“Morbid Attraction” – 1991 and “The Lurker At The Threshold” – 1992), Catacomb finally made a deal with Drowned Productions, the Spanish label of Dave Rotten (Avulsed), and “In The Maze Of Kadath”, their third demo, was released as a 7” inch single in 1993. It was quite strange that the Spanish version only had three tracks while the French tape had five. Like many French Death bands (I’m thinking of Supuration for example), Catacomb played a unique kind of Death Metal – they had a very strong identity, and didn’t try to copy American gangs. The music of Catacomb was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, and so the tracks are introduced by sick keyboards openings to set the mood (keys played by a girl, Nathalie, which was quite unusual by then). Then, you get gripped by James’ inhuman growl, and it comes very easy to fall for that pretty slow, incantatory, ambient Death Metal.
