Back to my YA paranormal phase with @authoroux ’s “Catacomb”, the third and final book of the “Asylum” series. This review may contain spoilers for the previous two books of the series, “Asylum” and “Sanctum”. As warnings go, “Catacomb” does contain mentions of mutilation, stalking, mental illness (disassociation), the foster system, homophobic parents, murder, and kidnapping, so proceed with caution and stay safe my dear companions. Published 1 September 2015, “Catacomb” is once again told from the perspective of young Daniel Crawford, as he, Abby, and Jordan embark on one last road trip before college, helping Jordan move out of his parents house to live with his uncle in New Orleans. But as always, trouble follows these three, and another bit of Daniels family history has cropped up. Reading this book was especially exciting for me, because just last summer I got to spend a week in New Orleans with my family, as my own ‘last hurrah’ before college, and I got to see them do all the fun touristy things I did, from beignets at Cafe Du Monde, to shopping at the street market! I would definitely recommend this series if you’re a paranormal horror fan looking for an easy read! In Vienna: inside St Stephen’s Cathedral where you are surrounded by gothic glory while you pray for your soul. I didn’t pay to go into the nave. Anyway, the “church workers” who sold tickets within the church are all so surly and unfriendly. I did go for the tour into the underground crypt. No camera allowed. That is the staircase leading down to the catacombs. The tour guide was clear and gave interesting information about the tombs and showed us the gory charnel house. Over 11,000 people’s remains are in the catacombs. 1220/ I is for : In The Maze Of Kadath – CATACOMB – 1993. Unless you’re an old French metalhead, you’ve probably never heard of Catacomb, who were, in the early 90s, a Death Metal act from the French Riviera. Even in the French scene, Catacomb never made it big, but they were known and respected in the underground. After two demos (“Morbid Attraction” – 1991 and “The Lurker At The Threshold” – 1992), Catacomb finally made a deal with Drowned Productions, the Spanish label of Dave Rotten (Avulsed), and “In The Maze Of Kadath”, their third demo, was released as a 7” inch single in 1993. It was quite strange that the Spanish version only had three tracks while the French tape had five. Like many French Death bands (I’m thinking of Supuration for example), Catacomb played a unique kind of Death Metal – they had a very strong identity, and didn’t try to copy American gangs. The music of Catacomb was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, and so the tracks are introduced by sick keyboards openings to set the mood (keys played by a girl, Nathalie, which was quite unusual by then). Then, you get gripped by James’ inhuman growl, and it comes very easy to fall for that pretty slow, incantatory, ambient Death Metal. Day 2 in Rome: we got to visit The Domitilla Catacomb, it is one of the largest and the most ancient underground cemeteries in Rome, part of a property then belonged to Flavia Domitilla going back to the year 120 A.D. The frescos preserved underground in this Catacomb demonstrate the Faith of the first century Christians in Rome. This is the only #Catacomb in Rome which has an underground Basilica. It is believed to have buried more than 150,000 bodies. We also got to see the famous Neptunes Fountain & Trevi fountain made a wish in it as well ✨

Part of that is thanks to do a 24 hour Extra Life board gaming event I went to a few weekends back. Another part was my enjoying ThunderGryph’s new Soda Pop collection which features a solid line of quick, but strategic 2-player games. This month also had me playing a lot of The Castles of Burgundy on BGA along with some Potion Explosion. I’ve also been enjoying some Moonrakers and it’s expansions solo more. The party finds themselves in a mystery involving one of the players. One of the PC’s is somewhat undead, but everyone in his hometown thought he was killed and buried six months ago. The questions keep coming and the group decides to head to the family crypt he supposedly was placed in. Here they’re attacked by assassins and displacer beasts! What’s even weirder is that the urn that should’ve held the pc’s own remains was instead filled with deer bones. Very strange indeed. A fun way to start a mystery while also worldbuilding and defining dwarven burial rituals. Also again I used a classic dnd monster, the displacer beast! I’ll admit it wasn’t my favorite stat block to use, i felt the displacement feature was a little wonky.
