On day 2 of the walk, we noticed April on a tree. My association with that month is largely about cotton bolls floating around the afternoon. The wind would carry them. They'd be seen floating in the air as children return from school in peak afternoon heat or jumping along the pavements. These soft white hair which I would be scared to touch would be sitting very lightly over the roadside dust collected or falling leaves of Ashoka and Neem on terraces, balconies, pink pavements and roads. But on day 2, for the first time in my life I saw this tree with the cotton bolls intact. Even in this wonder, there is worry. If see your neighbourhood changing, it is better to note it down rather than deposit a later of wonder on it and let it go. Seen here is the Silk Cotton tree and red bottlebrush tree as is at the end of its bloom but you can still see a few of its flowers hanging downwards. I shook hands with them and said thankyou. At the end of the walk, we saw a black and white Magpie Robin arriving on a red wall under the shade of trees. I will talk about these trees in detail after doing some more research. Can't just generalise them as trees. They were a sight to behold and of different genus. Trees of Delhi Crescentia Alata Kunth, Gourd Tree or the Mexican Calabash I had earlier photographed Crescentia Cujete or Beggar's Bowl tree and since then waited to click the other variety. What's the difference between the two? Alata- Leaves trifoliolate; petioles prominently winged; flowers maroon red; fruits globose or pyriform. Cujete- Leaves simple, undivided; petioles not winged; flowers whitish green; fruits ovoid. A few days ago I spotted the two young trees flowering by the gate of Alliance Francaise and rushed to document them. I've never seen them fruiting though. Crescentia Alata are native to Mexico & tropics of Central America. Morro is one of the native fruits to Oaxaca and surrounding regions. I heard that the seeds are edible and high in protein with a licorice-like sweet taste. A refreshing drink called horchata is prepared using the ground seeds, mixed with other ingredients. Even the ripe fruit pulp is eaten i believe. The bell shaped night blooming musky flowers and gourd like woody cauliflorous fruits grow directly on the trunk and branches. The fruits are hollowed, dried and used as eating vessels, cups or carved into kamandals. I saw some gorgeous photos of bowls made with the shells of these fruits in a book about Mexico. Handcrafted and painted with lovely designs. Wish I could get one to paint on. Anyway, for now rejoicing about the trumpet-like blooms. There's some confusion about the Crescentias of Delhi but that's always the case with rare trees here. On another note, Have you noticed that at this time of year there is a hanami of bell shaped flowers. Wonder why is that? Trees of Delhi The grand Old Peelu /Meswak /The toothbrush tree/ Salvadora persica. This quintessential desert tree, a standalone specimen with gnarly trunk and grand canopy, is not just a show stopper but home to many birds. This time it was fruiting and the last of the jewel like Ruby coloured berries were hanging here n there. A pair of crows was in deep conversation about a possible nesting sight or perhaps they were just at home in the hollow of the trunk. This magnificent tree is the oldest in Sunder Nursery though there are three more there. Peelu are Delhi's true natural heritage. The trees at Mehrauli, Lal Kot, Delhi golf course and Nizamuddin have stood there for more than a century. This one at Sunder Nursery, as per a gardener, is about 700yr old. Maybe someone should give it a heritage tag like the one in Qutub Complex. These old trees are thriving habitats for many bird & butterfly species and extremely important to ecology because they resist the climate warming and act like a shield against storms & other natural calamities. Peelu is among the 22 native species of trees that are on the verge of disappearing from the Capital’s landscape. These old trees are like sanctuaries and need to be cherished & protected. It wasn't unfortunately planted as Avenue tree because the Britishers believed it was unfit. Flowering Trees of Delhi Leucaena leucocephala. River tamarind or white lead tree is blooming these days. It has delicate creamy white mimosa like clusters of puffs with many stamens borne at the end of a long stalk. This draught hardy tree is a native of Central America but is now common across the tropical belt. The tree is often confused with Ronjh due to its leaf similarly. As it looks a lot like the Babul ( Vachellia nilotica) tree hence its Hindi name, Subabool. No other similarity with Babool though. There was a time these trees were planted excessively in cities but they would break and topple over in rains and high winds so the craze died with time. Subabul bark and pulp are the main components of the paper industry in South India. The tree is a part of the social forestry program to increase green cover and provide fuel for rural households. चैत्र और वैशाख । The balmy days of Chaitra - Vaishakha . Usually and globally Spring is considered the most colourful season of the year. This may or may not be applicable to all parts of Bharat. In the northern plains and mountains, the cusp period of Chaitra and Vaishakha (April mid to May mid), is actually most colourful. Maybe that is why people born in this cusp are so attracted to lot of colours (like me 😊). This tree, from where these green furry flowers are shedding in this month, and creating a carpet of vibrant green and yellow, is older than our society. It is said, that this tree was already there on the land, when the builders decided to plan a society here. It was a lone standing tree, with a village style chabootra around it, that would have later been converted to the current amphitheater style seating. It is one of the most beautiful places in my place of residence, and it is right outside my workspace. The person who would have planned this society, would have been a lover of bio diversity; else I do see many societies with lot of amenities, but there is a stark absence of indigenous trees and the little bit greenery that is there, doesn’t have that charm, and looks dressy only. Trees of Delhi I had missed the flowering of this tree in the last few years but this time I marked my calendar and caught it in full blooming glory with a carpet of flowers underneath. Gamhar or Gmelina arborea has these lovely trumpet shaped yellow flowers with a fruity scent. The tree itself is remarkable. A straight bole with branches on top filled with thick foliage of large, glossy leaves. The tall trunk of this old tree had exfoliated from grey to white. Gamhar tree is associated with strength, resilience, & prosperity, symbolizing the intricate connection between humans and nature. Ecologically this tree is of utmost importance. The strong, durable wood is used in carpentry and it has medicinal uses too. The tree has deep historic and cultural significance. I don't do many food posts these days but as I'm doing some Commissioned projects it's time to share a few nature and food posts. Made Pico de Gallo with a twist. I went foraging mahua the other day and are a handful while watching the gardeners rake autumnal leaves from the charbagh grounds. I always sit and talk with them about various things happening in the gardens. Sometimes sharing tea but that day we shared sweet buttery mahua and exchanged stories from the villages they came from. This Pico de gallo and other traditional red salasa I learnt from my Spanish professor. The Mexican Salsa fresca is robust in flavours and so good to eat. I often add grapes or make it with mango, peaches, pineapple strawberries etc too. It can be paired with carnitas and grilled meats, and in tacos, fajitas, tostadas, and burrito bowls. You can serve it with nachos or crunchy tortilla chips. Adding fresh mahua to this was a great taste enhancer. I came upon this idea from @sangeetaamkhanna Sangeeta Khanna's post. There's always something new to learn from her. I think this was the best use for the handful of mahua that I had. Do make this fresh salsa & pair it with guacamole. It's a match made in heaven. Always hand chop the ingredients. You can use red bell pepper instead of jalapeño. Neeli Gulmohar creating its purple magic across the city is Delhi's 'Trees in Bloom Showstopper Event' this time of the year. In the midst of all the hues of reds and yellows these tones of indigo violets steal your heart. Jacaranda mimosifolia is a favourite tree to paint too. I remember some gorgeous Jacs from Chandigarh. Chamrod, a native of Delhi, can be noticed only when flowering. It is a medium sized, non-descript tree when not flowering or fruiting! But the eco-system, with all its organic and in-organic components, loves it 🌟 Pictured here are not-so-clear mobile shots of its endearing tiny star-shaped white blooms ... which have now, after a short flowering, given way to green fruit. Harit Upvan Upralsi was a bleak and arid area of terrain where the soil was too salty to support any kind of vegetation. Many believed it was hopeless. The initial issue it encountered was flooding. Nothing could grow there because the land would always flood after a rainstorm. The Noida Authority deserves praise for its decision in 2022 to provide the HCL Foundation 6.75 acres of land, which was a major move in the direction of environmental preservation and community well-being. The delicately beautiful kachnars of Delhi. This White kachnar tree (Bauhinia variegata L var. candida) is a sight to behold. I just stood there mesmerised by this sensation show stopper. It's also known as Buddhist Bauhinia, white orchid tree and white mountain ebony tree. The flowers are sweetly scented and the tree looks stunning when in full bloom. It belongs to the Fabaceae family. The flowers are used in culinary preparations and for medical purposes too. This pink one is an old favourite. It's in the front yard of a friend's home. Meri rooh kush ho gayi.... She told me how passionate she is about the tree and how she planted it 25+ yrs ago. An excellent cook, she uses the flowers in qormas and other dishes. Yes, the kachnar flowers and buds are edible. Even the white kachnar. The tender buds make excellent raita and vegetables. Kachnar is blooming at many places in Delhi right now. It's one of the most popular ornamental trees because of its orchid-like flowers. These two are the tallest kachnar that I've seen. Kachnar belongs to the Gulmohar family and is also known as orchid tree, phalgu Raktakanchan, kanaraj or kanchan. The tree is also considered medicinal. PLANT 345 Diospyros malabarica Family #ebenaceae Native to parts of S and SE Asia, this tree is found in wet tropical forests and has the English common names Malabar Ebony and Indian Persimmon (the regular persimmon is in the same genus). This slow growing tree is prized for its timber. The ripe fruit is edible, although *extremely* astringent (it made my mouth bleed!) These trees are planted on #IISERP campus, Pune. PLANT 344 Albizia lebbeck Family #fabaceae This deciduous tree is native to the subcontinent, and is widely cultivated. It is naturalised and introduced into several parts of the world. Called Siris in Hindi, this is another one of the trees I learnt to identify through Pradip Krishen's Trees of Delhi. I find this tree extremely nostalgic, and the scent of its flowers immediately transports me to summer vacations back home in Delhi. Now savouring the orange and crimson coloured blossoms of the unusually tall Silk Cotton tree, referred to as Palash in India. The petals of its flower are firmly embedded in a rounded base, akin to a shuttlecock.
