Fasting is fantastic...for some. id this you? Pushing the eating window further out and closing the gap tighter. Overtraining during your fast to optimise fat loss. Never stopping during the day to distract from thoughts of food. Topping up a bottomless cup of caffeine to help kill cravings to make the fast last that much longer...but to what end? No eating window at all? The obsessions tighten up and you began to isolate further. If you know your intentions are to restrict yourself because you cant control yourself when faced with food OR so that you can REALLY enjoy the binge without putting on weight after you finally do indulge...I get it and i've been there, but it will not help you with your emotional eating disorder and it will torment your self image. Fasting can do serious damage if not done 'correctly'. If you are undernourished because of dieting or as a result of eating too many processed foods, fasting wont help you, it will only lead to more binging, bloating and brain fog. If you're fasting to fix body image issues, it can lead to harmful consequences like deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, and increased anxiety and depression. This can perpetuate a cycle of unhealthy eating patterns and further damage your emotional state. I can't stress this enough, I loved fasting when my mind was right, I got all the benefits. At my lowest weight, I consumed mostly ultra-processed diet foods with as few calories as possible that absolutely OWNED me.๐ญ Food addiction is closely related to binge eating disorder. A 2021 study showed, for example, that people with binge eating disorder eat mostly ultra-processed foods. Studies on UPF addicted rats show that theyโd rather inflict self-harm for a constant supply of these foods and when they don't receive any, would rather starve, even when whole foods are available to them. You can see how, without fully understanding why you feel the way you do, the case against ourselves builds, leading to insidious guilt and shame that send you into a self-loathing downward spiral. Understanding these invisible enemies can help you find the self-compassion needed to recover from compulsive behaviors and a harmful inner dialogue. Although energy balance is the underlying principle of weight management, it ignores the hundreds of factors that influence both sides of the โenergy inโ (i.e., eating) and โenergy outโ (e.g., physical activity) equation. In fact, a 2017 research article, "The DONE Framework," exploring the determinants of nutrition and eating, identified 441 factors contributing to nutrition and eating behaviour. Examples include: Individual factors: โข Biological taste preferences โข Income โข Education โข Mental health โข Self-efficacy Interpersonal factors: โข Social support โข Social norms โข Cultural background Environmental factors: โข Food availability โข Product marketing (packaging, price, etc.) โข Product palatability and sensory appeal โข Food outlet density โข Exposure to advertising Policy factors: โข Nutritional guidelines โข Food advertisement regulations โข Healthy eating and nutrition campaigns Weight management is complex. Individuals who are overweight or obese often face significant stigma, prejudice, and discrimination because of their weight. This social pressure can be more distressing than the chronic health issues associated with obesity, which typically donโt manifest until after prolonged periods of being overweight or at higher levels of obesity (BMI over 35) occur. I hope this provides insight into the complexities of eating behaviour and weight management. Relying solely on weight as the primary outcome is not an effective measure of overall health. Moreover, it can fuel stigma and judgment towards individuals based on their weight and body shape. This stigma impacts not only individuals with larger bodies but also individuals within a "healthy" weight range who may engage in disordered eating habits to control their weight, compromising their health in the process.

Cutting out and restricting certain foods that are labeled as โunhealthyโ or only eating โcleanโ can lead to bingeing or overeating those same foods when we get hungry or stressed. Many of us have been on an endless rollercoaster of so called healthy restrictive diets that cut out entire food groups: Paleo, Keto, Low Sugar, No Sugar, etc etc etc and on and on. Mindful eating is a much better approach to slowing down and savoring the foods that you eat. No foods or food groups are โforbiddenโ. You get to decide who youโre going to be. Itโs difficult to find the words that are enough to encapsulate all of what the last two years have felt like, brought to me, kindly removed from me. These years have felt fast and slow all at once. Theyโve let me feeling full and particularly empty in a strange and difficult to articulate type of way. I feel new and yet different and also the same. Two years ago I would have felt frustrated and annoyed and quite crazy for articulating the fact I feel and experience two differing and opposite emotions at the same time. Yet, I think the most profound and life-changing concept Iโve come to adapt is the truth that I can live in the grey. I donโt have to be happy or sad, I can be both. I donโt have to reflect on good experiences or bad experiences, I can reflect on both. I donโt have to choose them or me, I can choose both. I donโt have to be full of knowledge or ask for help, I can have both. I can choose both Itโs okay to live in the grey And itโs okay to not know Two years later, the end of a beautifully transformative season and the beginning of a season that holds a lot of โI donโt know.โ Iโm scared and excited and apprehensive and I anticipate a lot of goodness, restoration, redemption, transition, and change. There is a lot I have learned and there is still a lot I donโt yet know. How do I leave something that was so good to me? Even now, Iโm struggling to find the words to end this post, which seems reflective of this least season. How do you neatly and beautifully end something that has impacted you so greatly? How do you say goodbye? Honestly, thatโs not something I feel as if Iโve learned yet. I kept a little list of the microaggressions I experienced over last week, after seeing more and more of the "fatphobia doesn't exist rhetoric" being thrown around. This is just a small slice of the way I'm treated every week. Tell me that I'm not experiencing fatphobia every minute of every day.... And tell me that can't have an impact on my health. Just existing in a space makes people angry, I want another few inches to get out and walk to the toilet in a restaurant and I get grunted at. Or people see me coming and they just don't move. This approach, piloted by Michigan Medicineโs academic medical centre through the Weight Navigation Program (WNP), has been proven to facilitate access to evidence-based weight management treatments and support patients in achieving notable weight reduction within a year. @sisugrams has been helping me prep for my presentation tomorrow at @mountsipt for their postpartum return to run group! ๐ Our diet culture is toxic enough, but there is an added layer of pressure when youโre pregnant or raising kiddos because youโre not just responsible for yourself. Many of my pregnant or postnatal clients are motivated to heal their relationship with food not just for themselves but also so that they can pass that healthy relationship down to their kids. Even as a kid with 6 weeks off from school, my Dad put so much pressure on me โYou should be outside, enjoy the weather while it lasts!โ -- it's a very British attitude to not complain about the unpredictable and elusive summers here -- but I was never an outdoorsy kid, and Iโm 100% not an outdoorsy adult either! (Swipe for baby Melanie in the summertime with my Dad) โ๏ธ Nowadays the summers are hotter, and Iโm the parent with a kid at home, juggling childcare, work and as few โIโm bored!โ moments as possible. The last few summers have required so much mental preparation, and I found that as Iโve divested from diet culture and learned to accept, honour and respect my fat body in its current form, I discovered products and routines to help me feel more comfortable. ๐ Listen, I will always be a cold weather person. ๐ Give me all the chilly mornings and unexpected snow falls, but I canโt control the weather, so I've decided to reclaim the summer! โก๏ธ WE should reclaim the summer. People are often surprised when I, the naturopathic doctor, encourage them to use medication for their blood sugars, cholesterol or high blood pressure. There is so much stigma around medication use, especially in conditions that we consider 'lifestyle diseases'. We've been led to believe that if we 'just' ate properly and moved more that we wouldn't need the meds. And so if we need meds, then that means that we're not doing enough or not doing it right. There are two problems with this: 1. Things that we have labelled 'lifestyle diseases' are largely genetic and often don't respond to lifestyle changes. 2. Lifestyle changes need to be implemented consistently over the long term in order to provide any health benefits. Changing how we eat, move and live isn't easy, even amongst the most privileged. So imagine how much more difficult it is for those who are marginalized. Medication can be a wonderful tool. They can provide the much-needed space in order to make lasting changes (if they're appropriate). You can let the medication control your blood sugars while you heal your relationship with food and your body. What if I put it this way? If a carpenter decides to use a nail gun instead of a hammer, does that mean that they're a failure as a roofer? If I use a calculator, is that a moral failure? No, they're tools. And using them makes life easier and more peaceful. Medication and lifestyle changes can work together. Rome wasn't built in a day, and muscle and endurance aren't either. Here are some tips when you are starting out (or resuming) your fitness routine. ๐๐๐ฌ๐ ๐๐๐๐ค ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ฑ๐๐ซ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐. Whether you recently had a baby, took a break due to injury, or haven't exercised in years, commit to starting small and slow. Give your body time to adjust to exercise, and ramp up slowly. ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ง ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐๐ฒ. If a workout feels too hard, pushing harder is not always the answer. Especially as you ease back into exercise, listen to the signals your body is sending. Reach for a lighter weight, slow your pace, or take frequent breaks. ๐๐๐ญ ๐ซ๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐ ๐จ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ฑ๐ฉ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ. Just because you easily ran five miles a day in college doesn't mean that's a reasonable starting point. Be realistic about where you are, and temper your expectations. Need a little motivation? Spend a few minutes today cleaning up your social media accounts. Fill your feed with content that is uplifting and affirming. Eliminate messages and images that lead to comparison, envy, or other negative thoughts. ๐๐ญ๐๐ฉ ๐: Unfollow any social media accounts that make you feel bad about yourself. ๐๐ญ๐๐ฉ ๐: Find accounts that focus on body neutrality and/or body positivity. Follow those accounts instead. ๐๐ญ๐๐ฉ ๐: Set a limit on how much time per day you spend on social media. Most devices have systems that can shut down various apps after you've reached a daily limit.
