@aiganagali 's practice is an act of devotion to her homeland of Kazakhstan and her spirituality. While making her artworks, she contemplates the lessons of life, how she experiences the mysteries of nature and its enriching truths. Tengrism, a core of her spirituality is, as she explains it, “an ancient, silent belief system where one connects with nature and understands their place as part of it." 𝗔𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗶 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴 07.03.2024 – 04.05.2024 𝙏𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙞, meaning "sky" in Turkic languages, was the supreme deity in Tengrism, a faith practiced by nomadic peoples of the Eurasian steppes from the 6th to 9th centuries A.D. Tengrism involves ancestor worship, animism, and shamanism, practices focused on communication with the spirit world through rituals and trances. In Aigana Gali’s paintings, colors symbolize this connection. She explains, "𝙆𝙚𝙠, which describes all the blues and greens, means ‘God given'. Tengri itself is 'a great-blue sky.’ “𝙎𝙖𝙧𝙮 describes all that is made of earth and all the earthly colors from yellow to red and brown. “𝙐𝙢𝙖𝙮 is the female manifestation of Tengri, coming from the earth. So, when we are alive, our body is from the earth and our soul from the sky, and when we die, each return to its place, and the circle is complete. We are this circle." Through the Tengri Light Works series, Gali reflects her own journey, mirroring a growing awareness of self while retaining a sense of belonging within the vastness of the sky. These works are an evolution from the abstract color fields of 𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘱𝘦, her earlier series, which explored her profound connection to the natural landscapes of her homeland. The past few months I⠀experienced a profound change within me. Amidst the physical and emotional challenges, I stepped into a realm of knowledge I never knew resided within. In the midst of stress, my mind raced, yet my body's pain elevated me beyond it all. Through the agony of my body, I found myself suspended in the ethereal dance of levitation, transcending the mundane confines of existence.⠀ ⠀ As I gaze upon the play between the mystical and the material in these new paintings, I pray to remain a simple conduit—a channel through which universal truths flow. A series of paintings from Tengri: Star Seeds, the most recent show by @aiganagali at @esmb.gallery in Dubai. ✴ "Aigana Gali is a multidisciplinary artist who works across a wide range of media, from canvas and paper to textiles and bronze, in a dynamic process guided by the essential character of each series. Born on the ancient crossing of the Great Silk Road in Almaty, Kazakhstan, her rich cultural heritage is an infinite source to her work. Gali’s paintings are invested with subtle historical or mythical references, just as the Saka buried treasures in the endless plains of the steppe. In relocating to London, Aigana explored ways to communicate and translate her cultural milieu, in particular the tonal shifts and vibrational quality of light found in the vast plains. Over the past decade she has developed an important body of work, delineated by series: Creation Myth, Steppe and Tengri. Each representing a metaphorical chapter in her evolution as an artist and thinker, Gali adapts both technique and materials according to an essential, abstracted schematic. The cusp, as captured by NASA, appears as an angel-like emanation, crowned with a halo and flanked by wings. The « Light Works » an earlier body of work by Gali, elaborate upon these remarkable images. They preserve the cusp’s formation and its pellucid quality while adding kaleidoscopic and geometric elements. Yurt is a simple, but genius creation, that also contains this universal symbolism of dyad. It has both feminine and masculine parts, lunar and solar. The unit of two gives a new life, ‘Sun and Moon as an eternal bride and groom.’ (Myth of Koblandy batyr) This interwovenness of the internal and the external, or the Microcosm and Macrocosm, illustrates the existence or rather co-existence of two sides. The reality of the daily life, the cosmos, and the internal universe, the unconscious. In this artwork, right inside covered by the manifold of a membrane/cocoon, one could see the composition of pearl like spheres. This is a spiritual symbol of the tree of life, in Jewish mysticism, comprised of interconnected nodes that bring together the energy of the divine realm and unifies physical and metaphysical realms, restoring the harmony to Creation.
