It is a beautiful target to frame specially if you use narrowband filters, This image is in HOO color with RGB stars, meaning the nebula details were shot with a dual band filter to isolate HA and Oiii details, and later without filters, to get the natural color of the stars. Here’s M101, aka the Pinwheel Galaxy, from my William Optics Pleiades 111 telescope. It’s 46 stacked 300s subs with no filter under Bortle 4 skies. I’ve been experimenting with filters and took a ton of subs using a GNB filter. I used PixelMath to combine the red from the GNB with the red from the clear at a 30/70 ratio. It was really tough to get the background black right after that, but the object was definitely enhanced. M8 lagoon nebula and M20 trifid nebula. Taking a photo now takes longer and longer. I'm curious about the limits of deep-sky photography under intense light pollution. This is a photo of the L channel, stacked from over 800 images in total. Compared to 200 images, you can clearly see the enhancement in the faint details. With single exposures of one minute under high light pollution, even increasing the exposure time by just 30 seconds makes the average value far exceed the midpoint of the camera's dynamic range. I believe there's still room for improvement, but since the rainy season is approaching, this will be it for this year. One advantage of deep-sky photography is that a photo can be completed over several years. I'll keep accumulating data. Sunspots AR3661, 3663 and 3666 taken from my drive on Tuesday May 7, 2024. These are the last of the images I've taken of some of the above active regions of our nearest star. You'll notice these shots are displayed in monochrome/false colour and a solo shot in typical inverted fashion. La Galaxie du Moulinet - M101 Située à 21 millions d'années-lumière dans la constellation de la Grande Ourse, M101 est une galaxie spirale de très grande taille, comparable à la Galaxie d'Andromède avec environ 1000 milliards d'étoiles. Elle a été découverte en 1781 par Pierre Méchain puis très vite ajoutée au catalogue de Charles Messier. C'est aussi l'une des galaxies qui occupe le plus d'espace dans notre ciel, du fait de sa taille et de sa proximité. Les interactions avec les galaxies voisines ont comprimé certaines zones d'hydrogène de M101, créant des zones de formation d'étoiles et donc des bras spiraux irréguliers autour de la galaxie. I photographed this during the night last night. Messier 57, The Ring Nebula. M57 is in the constellation of Lyra, it is a planetary nebula (a planetary nebula is a star in it's later stage of life which has ejected it's outer layers). The star at the centre of the ring is what's left of the original star as it begins its process of becoming a white dwarf. This is the fate of our own Sun in 5 billion years. The blue-green is caused by ionized oxygen and the reddish hue is caused by hydrogen. I photographed only for two hours or so last night until the clouds rolled in, 30 second exposures at ISO 3200. Sadr Region in Cygnus This region refers to the emission nebula surrounding the star Sadr (Gamma Cygni) that forms the intersection of the cross in the constellation Cygnus, which is in the center of this image. It contains the Butterfly Nebula (on the left) and open star cluster NGC 6910 (top left of Sadr). This is our first true narrowband image since transitioning to a monochrome camera a couple months ago. We were excited to fully test our mono setup and processing including capturing and incorporating RGB stars. The image is in SHO (sulfur in the red channel, hydrogen in the green channel, and oxygen in the blue channel) with stars captured in RGB to show their natural colors. ¿Sabíais que hoy es el Día Mundial de la Astronomía? Por eso os quiero compartir una de mis primeras fotografías de la Vía Láctea de las que estoy realmente orgullosa, de 2017. Siempre amé mirar al cielo nocturno, desde pequeña me encantaba localizar constelaciones junto a mi padre. Pero sin duda la fotografía fue la que realmente me hizo interesarme por la astronomía, porque amaba capturar el cielo nocturno y empecé a querer saber mucho más sobre él. Y empecé a estudiar astronomía, astrofísica, incluso física de partículas! Yo, que siempre fui de letras toda la vida, que en la ESO huí de Física y Química en cuanto tuve ocasión porque las odiaba, leyendo ahora libros de física de partículas y deseando ir al CERN a ver el acelerador, increíble! Ojalá mis profesores hubieran sabido despertar en mí esta pasión tardía, quizás me hubiera dedicado a otra cosa. Pero quizás entonces nunca hubiera descubierto cómo amo la fotografía, y cómo me apasiona enseñarla a otros. Stolen with pride from Wikipedia: #Messier53 (also known as #M53 or NGC 5024) is a #globularcluster in the Coma Berenices constellation. It was discovered by Johann Elert Bode in 1775. M53 is one of the more outlying globular clusters, being about 60,000 light-years (18.4 kpc) light-years away from the Galactic Center, and almost the same distance (about 58,000 light-years (17.9 kpc)) from the Solar System. The cluster has a core radius (rc) of 2.18 pc, a half-light radius (rh) of 5.84 pc, and a tidal radius (rtr) of 239.9 pc. This is considered a metal-poor cluster and at one time was thought to be the most metal-poor cluster in the #MilkyWay. Abundance measurements of cluster members on the red giant branch show that most are first-generation stars. That is, they did not form from gas recycled from previous generations of stars. This differs from the majority of globular clusters that are more dominated by second generation stars. The second generation stars in NGC 5024 tend to be more concentrated in the core region. Overall, the stellar composition of cluster members is similar to members of the Milky Way halo. NGC 3293 - The Gem Cluster Hot blue stars shine brightly in this beautiful, recently formed galactic or "open" star cluster with a beautiful blue reflection nebula appears just in front of a dense dust lane and red glowing hydrogen gas emanating from the Carina Nebula. Open cluster NGC 3293 is located in the constellation Carina, lies at a distance of about 8000 light years, and has a particularly high abundance of these young bright stars. A study of NGC 3293 implies that the blue stars are only about 6 million years old, whereas the cluster's dimmer, redder stars appear to be about 20 million years old. If true, star formation in this open cluster took at least 15 million years. Even this amount of time is short, however, when compared with the billions of years stars like our Sun live, and the over-ten billion year lifetimes of many galaxies and our universe. A stormy Sun The full enormity of sunspot group AR 3664 (at the bottom of the Sun’s disk in this image) is apparent in this shot taken with a Nikon Z9 mirrorless camera and 400mm lens at ISO 32. The shot is a composite, one exposed for the solar disk (1/32,000 of a second at f/32) and one for the landscape (1/4,000 of a second and f/9). The Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) is located approximately 25 million light years away, and is estimated to contain at least one trillion stars. If even a fraction of those had planets and a fraction of those had life, there could be millions of life forms just in this image alone. While my set up times are getting faster, the persistent cloudiness in New England hasn’t allowed for a clear night in what seems like months. Unfortunately, I was only able to get about an hour of integration time before the clouds rolled in! NGC 4725 and Arp159 Taking advantage of some clear nights near the New Moon, I took the opportunity to shoot again this lovely interacting galaxy pair in Coma Berenices constellation. This cosmic landscape features NGC 4725 (the largest galaxy), an intermediate barred spiral galaxy with only one arm, giving rise to an interesting ring structure and located at about 40 million light years from us. This galaxy is strongly interacting with its neighbour NGC 4747, also known as Arp 159, the lobated galaxy on the right of NGC 4725. These lobes are tidal tails which indicate this galaxy has suffered strong gravitational interactions somewhere in its past. It is the second time I shoot this area, the first one at being at my Bortle 8 home location while this one is taken from the Bortle 3 skies at the remote observatory. Quite similar integration time but much better outcome this time. Hope you enjoy. 📍 NGC 7023, Irisnebel, 14.05.2024 🔭 Skywatcher Heritage 150/750 📸 @svbonyastronomy SV605CC 🎞️ Sharpcap 4.0 (40min exposure, subframes 9s) ✏️ GraXpert, Siril, DenoisePY, Gimp, Astrosharp 🌠 Adobe Lightroom Mitte Mai hatten wir in Hessen neben beeindruckenden Polarlichter auch endlich wieder zwei klare Nächte in Folge, die ich für ausgiebige Beobachtungen genutzt habe. Dabei habe ich mich diesmal auf wenige Objekte konzentriert und dafür versucht, diese so lange wie möglich zu belichten. Die Resultate zeigen mir, dass dies die richtige Herangehensweise für die Zukunft ist, denn durch längere Belichtungszeiten können viel mehr Details dargestellt werden - wie zum Beispiel die Dunkelnebelstrukturen um den Irisnebel in diesem Bild. Ein schönes Erfolgserlebnis! In mid-May, we finally had two clear nights in a row in Hesse, which I used for extensive observations, as well as impressive auroras. This time I concentrated on a few objects and tried to expose them for as long as possible. The results show me that this is the right approach for the future, because longer exposure times can reveal much more detail - such as the dark nebula structures around the Iris Nebula in this image. Güneyin Fırıldak Gökadası olarak bilinen Messier 83'ü çekmek benim için baya zor oldu. Zira adından da anlaşılacağı gibi Güney Yarımküre'den çok daha iyi çekilebilen bu hedef Kuzey Yarımküre'de 23 dereceden yukarı yükselmediği için her türlü kirlilik ve atmosferik etki nedeniyle temiz görüntü elde oldukça zor oluyor. Ok… so it has been a very long time since I have been able to post an actual complete deep space image… with the equipment nightmares, weather and a new steep learning curve with mono imaging and processing, I have finally managed to get everything together! So, here it is! My image of M81 and M82, Bode’s and Cigar galaxies! Not a whole bunch of data as it was mostly from equipment testing and was hampered by high cloud over two nights and it being my first attempt at LRGB processing I am alright with the turnout! I am sure I will be improving over the next while as I gain confidence with the equipment and processing but this was a great first go at it! NGC2903 Située à environ 26 millions d'années-lumière et dans la constellation du Lion, NGC2903 est une galaxie spirale isolée. Étant donné qu'elle n'appartient à aucun groupe identifié, on dit qu'il s'agit d'une galaxie du champ. De forme spirale avec une légère barre, elle fait partie des cibles principales du début de la saison des galaxies, mais la mauvaise météo cette année m'avait empêché de la photographier plus tôt. Hallo zusammen! Gestern konnte ich die klare Nacht nutzen um eine weitere Galaxie abzulichten. M51 die Whirlpool Galaxy. M51 ist eine Spiralgalaxie im Sternbild Jagdhunde, die Entfernung zu unserer Milchstraße beträgt etwa 24 Millionen Lichtjahre und sie hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 80000 Lichtjahren. M 51 hat einen nahen, wechselwirkenden Begleiter, NGC 5195. In M 51 findet derzeit eine außergewöhnlich aktive Sternenenstehung statt, die vermutlich durch die Gezeitenwechselwirkung mit NGC 5195 verursacht wird. In ihrem Kern befindet sich ein supermassereiches schwarzes Loch. Gestern bin ich auch so richtig warm mit meiner neuen Montierung der UMI 17 geworden. Ich hatte ein recht gutes Guiding mit einem RMS Error von unter 0,7" :-). 🔭Messier 63 auch als NGC 5055 bezeichnet ist eine Spiralgalaxie im Sternbild Jagdhunde. Das auch Sonnenblumen-Galaxie genannte Objekt ist vom Sonnensystem etwa 25 Millionen (je nach Quelle auch 30 oder 37 Mio.) It's not "good", but it's a start. I had planned on 4 hours of imaging, but my camera had different thoughts. I don't know what happened, but it shut down after 90 minutes. This is the first time I've actually captured something that's recognizably a DSO, especially as you squint. I wasn't kidding when I said it was a journey. Milky-Wat at Portland Bill Here I come with my 3rd favourite photo from the trip to Portland Bill on Friday the 3rd of May. Track/Stack/Blend/Composite Story: Since I started taking Milky-Way photos I wanted a flowery foreground but I never had the chance of getting something that I liked. This time, while looking for a good composition with the lighthouse, I noticed the little purple flowers and I thought of giving it a try. The area around the lighthouse is very well lit but the flowers were in the dark, making it harder to have them as my foreground. I never thought it was gonna work but I used my head-torch to slightly light them up and I can say that I'm very happy with the way the photo came out. Equipment: Astro-modified Canon 6d Sigma Art 24-35mm f2 lens at 24mm f2.8 iOptron Sky-Guider Pro star tacker The foreground is a single image, 30sec, ISO 1600, 24mm f2.8 and the sky is a stack of 12 x 120sec, ISO 1600, 24mm f2.8 tracked images The stacking of the tracked images was done in Sequator and the editing was done in Lightroom Classic, Pixinsight and Photoshop with the blending with the final touches in Photoshop.
