These famous Damien Hirst sculptures of sharks suspended in formaldehyde have been a cornerstone of Contemporary art ever since they were first unveiled in the 1990s, selling for as much as $14 million. Despite the price tag, some of these sharks are starting to deteriorate within the liquid. Interesting side note: this would be considered natural “wear and tear”, which is not typically covered by a fine art insurance policy. There is a recent article in @guardian exposing the fact that some of these works were actually manufactured in 2017, but still given a date in the 1990s. The article indicates this is misleading but Hirst’s spokespeople claim conceptual art is frequently dated at the time of conception, not the time of execution. I personally agree with Hirst on this one but I think the key here is that it’s conceptual art, which is not necessarily executed by the hand of the artist, but rather the artist thought of the concept (think Sol LeWitt). Though I suppose the discrepancy could have been clearer by listing both dates. On the bright side, the pieces created in 2017 probably have more “intact” sharks than the ones from the 90s. 🎨Happy birthday to Vincent Van Gogh, born March 30, 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands. I had the absolute pleasure of bringing this sculpture to market recently. This is Joe Fafard’s The Sower (Van Gogh). Here we see a portrait of Van Gogh, standing contrapposto with palette and paint brush in hand. This is inspired by Van Gogh’s painting titled The Sower, which was itself an homage to the painting of the same title by an artist Van Gogh admired, Jean-François Millet. Both Millet and Van Gogh intended to romanticise and revere peasant agrarians, as this humble man sows the seeds that feed the nation. What Fafard has done here is pay reverence to Van Gogh as he proverbially sowed the seeds of his art that has had a profound impact on art for generations.
