I am excited to announce my sculpture 𝑹𝒆𝒅 𝑹𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑫𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 is now in the permanent collection at the Historic Arkansas Museum. Forever grateful and beyond thankful. As a female artist and citizen of the Caddo Nation, I am honored to give my artwork included in a collection that celebrates the Caddo people, who are indigenous to the land today known as Arkansas. It is meaningful to continue in the ancient tradition of working the clay; especially after the Caddo people endured tumultuous removals and cultural upheavals after contact. I imbued my sculptures with my technique and style, while at the same time, they naturally carry the spirit of my ancestors and their amazing resilience. Arkansas is a stunning place of natural beauty. My ancestors knew this, and it was no wonder I fell in love with it as a student at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. I feel so many connections to Arkansas, both ancient and modern. To be included in this collection celebrating modern artists and visionaries is tremendously fulfilling. For a historic museum to respect and share the history and culture of the Caddo people helps to ensure future generations can do the same. Bronze statuette of a Kushite king Third Intermediate Period, 25th Dynasty, c. 713–664 B.C. Discovered in Egypt or Northern Sudan, uncertain at the present. Met Museum. 2002.8 The Kushite kings wore a distinct regalia, including : a cap crown, double uraei, and ram’s-head amulets. The twin uraei on this kneeling monarch have been “corrected” to one, while the ram’s-head amulets on the necklace and the king’s name on his belt were hammered out by a later Saite ruler. From a technical standpoint, the sculptures are made of compatible rods of borosilicate glass, which I heated with a flame generated by burning propane-butane gas and oxygen at temperatures ranging from 1400 to 1600 degrees Celsius. When the glass rods were heated to a liquid state, I first formed them into thin rods, then joined them together and gave them their final shape. The technique of shaping glass in a flame has a long tradition, but nowadays we can more precisely control the temperature and adjust the amount of oxygen in the flame. I used black glass as well as colored glass: cobalt blue, yellow, and red colored with mixtures of cadmium, sulfur, copper, and selenium. The yellow and orange glass rods I initially used appeared colorless, but they acquired colors in the flame due to the presence of oxygen and the addition of metal oxides to the glass mixture. As I subjected the glass rods to high temperatures, the metal atoms, oxygen, and the glass mixture I used underwent a chemical reaction. After cooling, the glass remained permanently colored. The "Experiment" series belongs to the collection "Emerging in Flames: Discovering the Polish Heritage of Artistic Glass." The objects were realized as part of a scholarship from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. Congratulations to Tuan Andrew Nguyen on the opening of Our Ghosts Live in the Future, on view at Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona from May 10 through September 24, 2024. This week we are welcoming new members joining the Society from all over the world. Meet Margo Trushina MRSS @margotrushina Margo Trushina is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in London, exhibiting her work internationally. She holds an MA (Sculpture) from Royal College of Art and MA in Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Arts. In her work, Margo Trushina explores the intersection of bioart and new feminist materialist ethics. Her living sculptures and environments reflect upon recent discoveries in neuroscience, biotechnology and ecology through the lens of personal bodily experiences. In tune with speculative ethics of care, Trushina pursues direct interspecies relationships as her way to address current environmental challenges;- rising sea-levels , species extinction, outbreaks of zoonotic diseases and pathologic gene mutations. The artist offers a subjective material vision of these problems by creating fragile environments by tying together substances that come from different natures ;- such as steel and neon with corals and breast milk. As you can see by all the trash, i get inspired in urban and industrial spaces, to do post-industial art. Bust of a girl is completely hand made from a single piece of natural sandstone. Peligian produces breathtaking work and belongs to a côterie of powerful women who continue to influence the contemporary art historical conversation, including Joan Jonas, Agnes Martin, Zilia Sanchez, Phyllida Barlow, and Louise Bourgeois. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, the artist received a scholarship to RISD Saturday School at nine years old and never looked back. In 1983 Peligian lost a large body of work to a flood which destroyed thousands of her pieces. Roland Persson’s life-like sculptures will be presented at @marketartfair in Stockholm May 17-19 as part of Helsinki Contemporary's curated booth at Liljevalchs konsthall. 🐚 🧪 🥀 🔬 🍃 Roland Persson is best known for his realistic silicone sculptures that contemplate the relationship between human and nature and the way we implement a variety of meanings to nature. While Persson uses mostly plants and animals as the source of his sculptures and drawings, the works can at times be also modeled after elements from a human environment, like industrial machinery, medical instruments, vases, or electrical cabinets, invoking a sense of nostalgia for a modern world of the past. His sculptures often nod to the tradition of still lifes, and, at times, even the memento mori. 🐚 🧪 🥀 🔬 🍃 At this spring's Market Art Fair, Helsinki Contemporary will present a curated booth with paintings by Aki Turunen and Emma Ainala, and sculptures by Roland Persson.
