I often mention that historical portraits speak to us. This is sometimes difficult to understand because some attributes are no longer known to us. But sometimes it's quite easy when national colors come into play. Even if we don't know right away who this charming young man is, his sash tells us that he is from Austria. And since he is wearing a sash, we then also know that he is somehow important (at least in his time). When I see portraits of very young people showing such accessories and dynastic orders, I always remember that sometimes people are born into a system. This can be a life full of privileges, but also a system from which it’s almost impossible to break out (if you do not feel comfortable in this environment). That's why I wrapped his sash around him like a cosmos and also emphasized the gold of his robe, which sets everything in motion. You know, I see myself as more of an outsider, who has never been very conformist to any particular scene. But that was only possible because I was not born into a system. And here is another work that I'm happy to show in London. Meet the sweet Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina, who was just 16 when she was married and this portrait was made. Her youthful age is one explanation for her petite appearance (I mean, look at her waist), but another is the fixation of a certain fashion style on reshaping the body. In this period, with the help of clothing, the silhouette was completely remodeled, the hips wide, the waist absurdly narrow (and there are a lot more things). Well, nowadays we have a term for this fixation on a special look: a fetish. So this mask, as I put it on her, is my tool to transfer historical aspects to our contemporary wording. This is just a short explanation of why I use this kind of masks. But of course, the baroque and later especially the rococo was a time of playful decoration. You know me, there had to be some bows on her mask. Small side note: while I was working on this portrait, I always had the feeling that the sweet dog at her side is somewhat speechless whether her new look. Hahaha, I loved that. I often mention that historical portraits speak to us. This is sometimes difficult to understand because some attributes are no longer known to us. But sometimes it's quite easy when national colors come into play. Even if we don't know right away who this charming young man is, his sash tells us that he is from Austria. And since he is wearing a sash, we then also know that he is somehow important (at least in his time). When I see portraits of very young people showing such accessories and dynastic orders, I always remember that sometimes people are born into a system. This can be a life full of privileges, but also a system from which it’s almost impossible to break out (if you do not feel comfortable in this environment). That's why I wrapped his sash around him like a cosmos and also emphasized the gold of his robe, which sets everything in motion. You know, I see myself as more of an outsider, who has never been very conformist to any particular scene. But that was only possible because I was not born into a system. And here is another work that I'm happy to show in London. Meet the sweet Frederika Sophia Wilhelmina, who was just 16 when she was married and this portrait was made. Her youthful age is one explanation for her petite appearance (I mean, look at her waist), but another is the fixation of a certain fashion style on reshaping the body. In this period, with the help of clothing, the silhouette was completely remodeled, the hips wide, the waist absurdly narrow (and there are a lot more things). Well, nowadays we have a term for this fixation on a special look: a fetish. So this mask, as I put it on her, is my tool to transfer historical aspects to our contemporary wording. This is just a short explanation of why I use this kind of masks. But of course, the baroque and later especially the rococo was a time of playful decoration. You know me, there had to be some bows on her mask. Small side note: while I was working on this portrait, I always had the feeling that the sweet dog at her side is somewhat speechless whether her new look. Hahaha, I loved that. This is a very special piece for me, created for my solo exhibition RUFF HOOD jamesfreemangallery in London, which opens June 15th. I'm very grateful and incredibly pleased that through the kind collaboration with philip_mould_gallery we are able to show the original from about 1620 alongside my work. Gosh, this is breathtaking and I'm very excited, because I really love this portrait. It's not just the beautiful flowers on her linen dress that contrast with the precious black of her gown. It's the gold embroidery that entwines the flowers and is dotted with glittering sequins. She must have glittered like a treasure chest as she walked. I have now given her a floral hood that accentuates the pattern and wraps her up like a precious gift of summer. Additionally, I've sprinkled a few sequins around her like stardust, which makes everything move. It's like a metaphor that portraits, despite the need for representation, always depicted living people, which is one reason why I'm so touched when I encounter them.
