Today’s spin is Band of Horses - Infinite Arms (2010) Infinite Arms, the third studio album by Band of Horses, was released 14 years ago today! It’s not only my favorite BoH album, but one of my all-time favorites by any band. It’s easily in my Top 20 albums of all-time. I’ve been lucky enough to see this band a handful of times over the years, but I’ve been in a drought since 2017. I did get to see them a couple of times on the Infinite Arms tour, including when they opened for @pearljam at @thegarden in New York City. Labeling that show as incredible doesn’t do it justice. If you’re a Pearl Jam fan, that was the show they famously played “Slow Lukin”. Ben Bridwell even came out during one of the encores and sang “Kick Out the Jams” with PJ. Such a memorable, kickass show. Now playing: Band Of Horses - Infinite Arms (2010). Another band that I absolutely enjoy listening to. Mix between Indie rock and Americana/folk rock sound. I knew Ben Bridwell from his previous band,and his voice has this cool swagger to it. Any of their albums are well recommended,especially first three. This was their third effort,and I'd say it's most consistent along with the debut. Album starts off with 'Factory', a song of longing for the past and fearing the future, "It's temporary, this place I'm in. I permanently won't do, this again". This depth is immediately complimented with signature whimsy, "An hour later, I was thinking it over by the snack machine. I thought about you in a candy bar." Sweet! 😁 'Compliments' is next and it's addictive,with Vibrant guitar,strong beat and some fun lyrics to go along. "Laredo" is pure fun,sounding closest to their debut album,with great main riff and sing along chorus. 'Blue Beard' follows and this one is centered around it's harmonic chorus,reminding me of Crosby,Stills and Nash mixed with 70's Chicago. These fellas make magic when they harmonize! 'On My Way Back Home' is almost a folk rock version of the Beach Boys' classic "Sloop John B.". A wonderful song about where you want to be, "I came in this way. And here now I'll stay, if the unknown have to wait one more day". Speaking of wonderful,title track 'Infinite Arms' is simply one of my all time favourite ballads. It's totally tender,with chirping of the birds,and tickling of grasshoppers,leading to this stunning chorus and usage of harmonies. 'Dilly' in contast is one of the most upbeat tunes here,no wonder they picked it as a single. That chorus is pure winner! I can listen to this forever. Another highlights include acoustic workout 'Evening Kitchen' and fastest song in here 'NW Apt.' with some great drumming. I promised a couple friends I’d post more from New Orleans and the street joy can’t be matched with global and domestic events but I’ll bring in the joy…and one of the best was the impromptu line dancing just as evening was beginning to pump up. —Somewhere here I have a Second Line clip: what a way to go out. Shouldn’t everyone get a little parade? And if you were bad? Mean tyrant? Hmmm, maybe the parade would be ironic, a way to say: see what you could’ve had…. Between the twist & the turn, the currents we can’t change but are here for us to ride out, I admire the active ones. So often this particular poet & writer is a passive witness. I’m looking for the best ways to contribute (a friend points out: but you’re in a band). —I listen to #BandofHorses, “The Funeral.” Humanity hears before we see, heartbeat said. O, colorfully painted houses & music in the soul of the community: we know you’re making it, even as the world spins. Sidebar: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if “It” would all stop, leaving us so we could continue vivacious exchange & dance? (Scoundrel “It.”) Despite the cacophonous multitude on a Friday and Saturday night along Bourbon Street, the fearless expression founded in joy has far more “forever” than the limited vision we see projected into oblivion. “Society” sings Eddie Vedder. So I post waiting to gather the words that champion joy, and humanity, on the eve before the band’s next length of the journey. Hail the Second Line. Hail the forever student bearing witness; may we learn forgiveness by being somebody’s rescue. O.k., New Orleans, you present-past lines of resilience…. Just witnessing you gives me hope.
