Others spoke of being forced to choose sides on the school playground. Or of being rejected by both sides. From Eden to exile by David Rohl Chapter Eight This was no ordinary statue. It was nearly three metres high. It depicted Joseph in his prime, with flame-red hair, a pale yellow skin tone (to indicate his northern origins), and a throw-stick held across the right shoulder as his symbol of high office … but also clearly marking him out as an Asiatic (and not Egyptian) servant of Pharaoh. The body of the statue was painted as if wrapped in the full-length robe of the vizier. But it was a vizier's cloak of a very different kind - decorated in an elaborate pattern of reds, blues, blacks and whites to represent the woven coat-of-many-colours' of a Middle Bronze Age Asiatic chieftain.

This was so dope. Finally made it to the Queen City Memorial at the Metropolitan Park in National Landing AKA Pentagon/Crystal City. For those who don’t know, Queen City was one of the many lost black cities that were pushed aside and buried for “expansion”. This particular city was erased because of the Pentagon, which is right down the street from the park. If you’re in the area stop by and take a peek. #queencityva #arlingtonva #blackhistory #blackhistoryisworldhistory #iminentdomain

April is National Poetry Month 📚 throughout the month we will be showcasing poets who had significant contributions in history. Beginning with the bright Richard Wright. The celebrated author and poet, left an indelible mark on American literature during the 20th century. Born in 1908 in Mississippi, Wright’s upbringing in the racially segregated South profoundly influenced his writing, shaping his exploration of themes such as racism, oppression, and social injustice. While Wright is best known for his groundbreaking novels such as “Native Son” and “Black Boy,” which vividly depict the struggles of African Americans in the United States, he also made significant contributions to poetry. His poetry often echoed the same themes of racial identity and the quest for freedom that permeated his prose. Wright’s poetry reflects the raw emotion and stark realism that characterized his literary style. Through his verse, he delved into the complexities of the human condition, confronting the harsh realities of racism and inequality with unflinching honesty. As we celebrate National Poetry Month, let us remember Richard Wright not only as a novelist but also as a poet whose work continues to inspire and provoke thought. Greene’s most notable achievement came with his television program, “Petey Greene’s Washington,” which aired on Washington, D.C.’s local station in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The show provided a platform for Greene to engage with his audience on topics ranging from civil rights and racial inequality to poverty and urban issues. With his charismatic personality and street-smart wit, Greene became known as the “voice of the people,” advocating for marginalized communities and challenging the status quo. In addition to his tv show, Greene made significant contributions to black film history with his role in the acclaimed 2007 biographical film “Talk to Me,” which depicted his life and career. In honor of Marvin Gaye’s 40th death anniversary, we will highlight some of his accomplishments and achievements. He was a legendary American singer-songwriter, he left an indelible mark on the music industry with his soulful voice and socially conscious lyrics. Marvin began his career as a session drummer before transitioning to singing and songwriting. He signed with Motown Records in the 1960s and quickly rose to fame with hits like “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)” and “Ain’t That Peculiar.” Gaye’s groundbreaking album “What’s Going On,” released in 1971, addressed social and political issues such as poverty, racism, and the Vietnam War. It marked a departure from Motown’s typical commercial sound and solidified Gaye as a voice for change within the music industry. In addition to his musical achievements, Gaye faced personal struggles, including battles with addiction and tumultuous relationships. Tragically, he was shot and killed by his father, Marvin Gay Sr., on April 1, 1984, one day before his 45th birthday, following a domestic dispute. Marvin Gaye’s legacy lives on through his timeless music, which continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, and his contributions to soul music and social activism remain unparalleled. Did you know that In 1938, Lloyd Gaines filed a lawsuit after being denied admission to the University of Missouri Law School in 1935 because he was black? In the 1930s, Gaines applied for admission to the University of Missouri School of Law, which at the time was a segregated institution. When his application was denied due to his race, he filed a lawsuit challenging the university's discriminatory admission policy. His case, Gaines v. Canada, reached the US Supreme Court in 1938. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Lloyd Gaines, stating that Missouri must either admit him to its law school or provide an equal educational opportunity within the state. However, the victory was bittersweet as Gaines mysteriously disappeared shortly after the ruling. His disappearance remains a mystery to this day. While his own legal battle was tragically cut short, Lloyd Gaines's courageous actions and the landmark court case bearing his name set an important precedent for racial equality in education. His case laid the groundwork for future civil rights victories, including the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, which declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional. Lloyd Gaines's story serves as a reminder of the individuals who bravely fought for justice and equality during a time of deep racial segregation and discrimination in the United States. For daily black history, follow us @lackhistorybuff #didyouknow #365daysofblackhistory #blackeducation #historyteacher #thursdaytruth #blackhistoryisworldhistory #instagood #photooftheday #throwback #followthispage #learn

Isabel Sanford was an American actress best known for her role as Louise “Weezy” Jefferson on the sitcoms “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons.” She won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1981 for her performance on “The Jeffersons.” making her the first African-American actress to win in that category and remained the only African-American actress to do so until 2023-24 when @quintab Quinta Brunson achieved this feat for her role as Janine Teagues on Abbott Elementary. Sanford’s portrayal of Weezy Jefferson was groundbreaking for its positive representation of an African-American family on television during the 1970s and 1980s. The Jeffersons was one of the first shows to portray an upper middle class Black family, paving the way for The Cosby Show and other successors. @theblackarchaeologist Cowboy Carter isn’t a country album—- it’s a history lesson: It’s a nod to the Africans who brought their musical genius with them through the middle passage. The banjo ( a cousin to the West African akonting instrument) is undeniably African in its origin. And to the first string band performers —- captive African people, whose music was appropriated to form Blackface minstrelsy the United States. The music style’s first successful commercial music. And to country legends like Deford Bailey , banjo and guitar masters like Etta Baker, Libba Cotten, and Lesley Riddle—-Who both shaped country music and the picking style that originated in the Piedmont region’s blues. And to halls and juke joints like Roseland Gardens (owned by my great grandfather) that gave artists like these a place to perform. And to Black Cowboys…whose labor once dominated the cattle ranching industry. THIS DAY IN BLACK HISTORY. IN 1938, LOIS JEAN WHITE, THE FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION, IS BORN IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE. SHE HELPED RAISE THE PTA'S PROFILE IN SEVERAL INNER CITY CLASSROOMS WHERE THEY WERE NOT PRESENT BEFORE. HER MAJOR CONCERNS WERE THE FACT THAT BIG CITIES SUCH AS PHILADELPHIA, BOSTON AND NEW YORK DIDN'T HAVE A STRONG PTA PRESENCE IN COMPARISON TO SUBURBAN CHAPTERS. MUCH OF HER TIME WAS DEDICATED IN INCREASING THE PTA'S REACH AND ENCOURAGING INNER-CITY STUDENTS TO STAY IN SCHOOL. EACH YEAR THE LOIS JEAN WHITE AWARD IS GIVEN BY THE TENNESSEE PTA TO TEACHERS WHO MEET THE LEADERSHIP ACHIEVEMENT REQUIREMENTS THREE YEARS STRAIGHT. WISHING YOU A HAPPY BIRTHDAY. #BlackHistoryIsWorldHistory

Mary Lou Williams was a jazz pianist, composer, and arranger whose influence on the history and culture of black music is profound. She rose to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance, where she became known for her innovative compositions and arrangements that bridged the gap between traditional jazz and bebop. Williams’ career spanned several decades, during which she collaborated with some of the most iconic figures in jazz, including Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. Beyond her musical contributions, Williams was a mentor to many aspiring musicians, particularly women, and she played a vital role in shaping the evolution of jazz as a distinctly American art form. As a pioneering figure in a male-dominated industry, Williams broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of female musicians. She challenged societal norms and stereotypes, demonstrating that women could excel as composers, arrangers, and bandleaders in the world of jazz. Williams actively mentored and supported aspiring female musicians, providing them with guidance, encouragement, and opportunities to showcase their talents. Over and over again, I wrote about Marian Anderson, who is recognized as a key figure in the struggle for #Black equality—especially in the arts. Lillian’s Right to Vote by Jonah Winter and Shane W. Evans is a powerful picture book that tells the story of Lillian, an elderly African American woman, as she reflects on her journey to the voting booth. Through Lillian’s eyes, readers witness the historical struggles of the African American community in the United States, from slavery and the Civil Rights Movement to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. As Lillian makes her way to vote, the narrative beautifully weaves together her personal memories and the broader history of the fight for voting rights. Shane W. Evans’ vibrant illustrations complement the text, creating a visually engaging and emotionally resonant exploration of the importance of voting and the resilience of those who fought for this fundamental right. This book serves as a valuable educational resource for children during Women’s History Month, highlighting the significance of civic participation and the ongoing pursuit of equality. #womenshistorymonth #womensrights #womenshistory #righttovote #yourvotematters #vote #election #voter #votingmatters #americanhistory #blackhistory #blackhistory365 #blackhistoryisworldhistory #kidsbooksrecommendations #kidsbookreviews #kidsbookstagram #socialjustice #socialjusticeeducator
