The Christ’s College Eco-Action Environment Award is to be awarded four times a year to people who show outstanding contributions to the environment. Both Hayden and James Reed have been involved in non paid work planting trees, releasing them, and spraying plus removing tree guards for a large community catchment project on the banks of the Selwyn river. To date they have planted over 12km of native trees as riparian planting using funding from Central Plains Community Trust. It’s a huge job and they have spent 3000 hours each working on it. A public walking track along the farm boundary, “Waikirikiri” (Selwyn), is also mown and maintained by both of them. The skills they have learnt are impressive and act as a tribute to being kaitiaki-caretakers of the area while also improving and protecting the native biodiversity. Left to right. Housemaster. JEWELLERY “Garland Necklace” Medium: Ceramic Artist: Blanche Fryer Location: Southbridge “The jewellery that I like to wear is a very personal expression of who I am, partly because I have created most of it myself, but it also reflects some of the stories in my life. I have been making ceramic jewellery for the last few years, exploring a smaller scale to create pieces in clay. I use a fine white porcelain clay to create each piece individually, which then gets bisque fired, in my kiln, up to 960 deg, before being glazed and re-fired up to 1220 deg. Sometimes, it takes several firings to acquire the desired colours and coverage.
