On Friday, and Saturday me and my good friend Dr Allan Barton embarked on a road trip to explore many churches of Norfolk. An absolutely massive hit of history. The churches are so very different from the churches of Lincolnshire. Norfolk is beautiful. Most of the churches we visited were made of flint, built on a grand scale, and constructed in the 15th century. In this post you will see medieval art of Saints that look like they have been purposefully vandalised. These are called Rood Screens. They seperate the nave and chancel, and were defaced at the time of the English Reformation in the 1500’s. Most of the Rood Screens, and Rood Lofts in the churches of Lincolnshire have completely disappeared, so to see this stunning medieval art, up close and personal for the first time, was such a treat. Saw many great medieval brass memorial plaques too. My favourite plaques are of the knights. It’s great to see their armour, and I always like to guess the date of the tomb based on the armour, as it changes through the centuries, and you can estimate the date based on certain styles. Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson! Yes! (I’m a big fan of his). Went to the church where his father was the vicar at, and also went to Horatio’s home village. So great see the things Nelson once saw, to walk where he once walked. It was an awesome experience for me. Took a ridiculous amount of photos, can only post ten on here. Going to make a few more posts to show you some of the delights Norfolk has to offer. My friend Dr Allan Barton @drallanbarton took his drone with him. He has taken extensive footage of a medieval ceiling absolutely covered with wooden statues of angels. The ceiling can only be described as a Masterpiece. Aerial view of the iconic Se Cathedral in Old Goa. Located in Old Goa, Se Cathedral is dedicated to the St. Catherine of Alexandria. Famed to be one of the largest churches in not just India but within Asia, this Church attracts hordes of tourists from everywhere. It is also known as St. Catherine's' Cathedral. It was on the feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria when in the year of 1510, Alfonso Albuquerque overthrew the Islamic Army and captured Goa. Se cathedral is also known to be one of the oldest and the most revered religious place in Goa. It has been recognized by the UNESCO as a heritage site as well. It is easily accessible as well via buses as well as local taxis. This Church was completed in the year of 1940; its construction took almost 80 years because of lack of funds and Spain’s temporary win over Portugal control in Goa. It is located towards the West of the Terreiro de Sabaio, the great square while its porch is facing the East side. Se cathedral stands beautifully with its marvelous architecture. It has Portuguese styled architecture, perfectly encompassing a Tuscan peripheral and Corinthian core. Se cathedral boasts of a captivating patio which can be reached via steps. With a height of 250 ft and a breadth of 181 ft, it mesmerizes visitors with its majestic beauty. Se cathedral also has five massive bells. One of the largest bells in Goa, 'Golden Bell' is also placed here. Revisited the Convento of the Templers in Tomar. The inner prayer altar is now open only to walk around the 8 sited of the altar, but still it is hard to see everything at ones, so rich are the adornments. A bit of history: The Convent of Christ (Portuguese: Convento de Cristo/Mosteiro de Cristo) is a former Catholic convent in Tomar, Portugal. Originally a 12th-century Templar stronghold, when the order was dissolved in the 14th century the Portuguese branch was turned into the Knights of the Order of Christ, that later supported Portugal’s maritime discoveries of the 15th century. The convent and castle complex are a historic and cultural monument and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. The famous round church (rotunda) of the castle of Tomar was also built in the second half of the 12th century. The church, like some other templar churches throughout Europe, was modelled after the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, which was believed by the crusaders to be a remnant of the Temple of Solomon. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem may also have served as model. The Romanesque round church is a Catholic Church from the castle (charola, rotunda) was built in the second half of the 12th century by the Knights Templar. From the outside, the church is a 16-side polygonal structure, with strong buttresses, round windows and a belltower. Inside, the round church has a central, octagonal structure, connected by arches to a surrounding gallery (ambulatory).
