Revenge of the Goldfish (1981) Artist / Origin: Sandy Skoglund (American, b. 1946) Material: Cibachrome color photograph Medium: Prints, Drawings, and Photography She builds elaborate sets, filled with props, figurines, and human models, which she then photographs. In her work, Skoglund explores the aesthetics of artificiality and the effects of interrupting common reality. Each element of her constructed scenes, taken individually, is familiar and unremarkable. The juxtapositions she creates among the parts, however, are surprising, strange, and new. The composition is centered around a bedroom. A child sits, awake, on the edge of a bed where an adult sleeps. The monochrome uniformity of the blue-green room and furniture plays on the idea of the whole scene as an aquarium. The detail, variety, and bright orange color of the 120 goldfish make them the most vivid part of the image. This photograph was taken in Thessaloniki where women were holding crosses to protest the state for taking land away from the church. In truth, the church in Greece pays no taxes, owns 1.4 million miles of land, while austerity measures are keeping people in poverty and closing services, becoming a land only for tourists. There is no “right” religious dogma. Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, are the most populated religious denominations in our world. With lesser known having equal power for the believer. I’m an Omnist, believing there are truths in every religious philosophy, and not one is better than the other. Working at the time on city details with Ektachrome 400 and push processing to accentuate grain and colour shifts, usually in full sun, this was just around the corner from where I worked. A site on the Georgian square was being demolished and developed, like others in the city. This building housed a shop display business which had been approached to sell. Some time later a construction machine ‘accidentally’ hit the side wall rendering the building unsafe and ultimately its demolition. Not an unusual occurrence I imagine. I’ve always liked how this print seemed slightly unlike a photograph, as if it was a commercial illustration like those in the Graphis Annuals we held in the library. I was very much influenced at the time by @francofontanaphotographer and he remains a part of the mix in my practice today. We print from the original glass plates, in a dark room to ensure we deliver archival standard black & whites every time. Brooklands was the world’s first purpose built motor racing circuit. The vision of local landowners Hugh & Ethel Locke King it was constructed on their 330 acre estate at Weybridge, Surrey. Work started in 1906 and eventually cost Hugh his personal fortune, a price equal to nearly £16m today.
