Originally, Michelle Kondos made her bones as a professional artist by doing fi ne art portraiture in oil, including two official portraits of the mayors of New Orleans. However, the beauty of the landscapes, people and animals of the West soon beguiled her. She still maintains a busy portraiture practice in New Orleans, but in 2013 she moved to Borrego Springs, in the remote California desert, to pursue her fascination with Western art. On any given day, you can find her at her easel in her studio there, light pouring in through her northern windows and layered images forming on her canvasses—or maybe she’s wandering somewhere in the back of beyond in her Jeep, sketching rocks and arroyos, hoping for a bighorn to wander by. This month in our #freshpaint we have some pretty exciting highlights from up-and-coming artists and brand new works available in studios and galleries around the country. First is a piece titled Wondrous Desert from Naomi Brown, you can see her work in the Cowgirl Up! show at Desert Caballeros Museum in Wickenberg March 22. The second piece is from artist Alice Leese who is a Texas painter who grew up on a ranch, and still lives on one today, which is how she finds herself so inspired. “My work is about place, specific locations. The work is regional to the Southwest United States, particularly the YT Ranch where I live and work. Coming from a background of ranching makes conservation and stewardship of place a priority,” she says. This work, Glass Mountains, Alpine, Texas, is available at Western Gallery.
