In ancient Egypt, Horus was a deity depicted with a human body and the head of a falcon, while Thoth often was represented with the head of an Ibis. Salvador Dalí for his interpretation of the image of the birdman remakes the Roman sculpture of Antinous (now considered as of Hermes) from the Belvedere gardens of the Vatican. In his sculpture “Birdman”, Dalí substitutes the human head with the head of a heron, sculpting a half-human, half-bird-like figure. The pose, curves, and drapes are as in the original sculpture and emphasize the figure’s fluidity and sophistication. With this work, Dalí expresses both his fascination with metamorphosis, his obsession with birds and the anatomy of the body and his admiration for the art of classical times, with the great balance and correct proportions as were represented in ancient Greece and Rome. Isn’t the charm of this sculpture perhaps in its Classical and yet Surrealistic essence at the same time? Salvador Dalí captures the essence of a formidable warrior on horseback, heading into battle with an uplifted arm in a gesture of victory. It was in 1971 when Dalí painted the Sun King in gouache, marking the birth of the Surrealist Warrior’s image. Dalí’s surrealistic interpretation of the warrior includes a window of light illustrated through a hole in his chest. The opening in the chest is a recurring theme in Dalí’s art and is present in many of his works, such as “The Madonna of Portlligat”. Our partnership marks an exciting project that brings Salvador Dalí’s limited bronze editions to Greece. Salvador Dalí was a true visionary and a prominent figure in the Surrealism movement and one of the most significant and innovative artists of the Twentieth Century. With his limitless imagination, Dalí created unique dreamlike images, using the technique of metamorphosis and his famous method known as “paranoid-critical activity”. In the beautiful gallery in Kolonakiou, a selection of Dalinian bronze sculptures conceived by the Catalan artist during his lifetime are exhibited alongside leading Greek and contemporary artists. In the Picture we see the “Surrealist Piano”, the image of a grand piano transforming into a surreal dancing living object. The conventional wooden legs of the piano are substituted with the legs of a cancan dancer with boots, skirts and frills.
