The art that I make is mostly of pets (living and those that have passed away) that I have been commissioned to create by their owners. It is always a challenge to capture their essence, likeness, and being in the artwork. We’re home and I wanted to thank everyone for attending the art show ! "For many years, I had searched for a solution to my chronic back pain that threatened the end of my riding career. (In 2015) I found Hanna Somatics (HS). This approach to gentle body movements has not only made an amazing difference in my ability to manage my back pain, it has made an enormous difference in my riding position. As much as HS was helpful for me, I was very doubtful how it could work with a horse...It took me exactly one round of lifting his legs and I could not believe how much it reflected everything I felt when I rode him. For example, in the right-lead canter he would come down too fast on his right front leg, which took away some of the flow and was obvious to me in the flying change to the right. When I tried to work with his leg lift in the right front he was not able to put it down slowly and softly. Once Tonico relearned to let that front leg down smoothly, his canter and the flying change to the right improved greatly. There were many other things I found working with his hind legs, back, neck and ribs...I could feel an improvement in Tonico under saddle right away. I also found that EHS exercises became an invaluable tool at horse shows, when Tonico would be very tight after shipping. EHS is a wonderful tool that really is available to anyone. Er muss aufgerichtet sein und in sich ausbalanciert werden. Stell dir vor, du trägst ein Goldfischglas in deinem Becken und du musst schauen, dass der Goldfisch nicht rausschwappt. Aus physiognomischer Sicht ist unser Becken mit unzähligen Muskeln und Bändern ausgestattet. Es verbindet den Oberkörper und die Wirbelsäule mit dem Unterleib und den Beinen. Es gibt dem Menschen Stabilität und ermöglicht ihm den aufrechten Gang. Gleichzeitig sollte es beweglich und geschmeidig sein, damit wir uns locker bewegen und in alle Richtungen drehen können. Der Sitz, wie oben erwähnt, ist das Kernstück und die unumgängliche Grundlage der reitenden Person, um im Gleichgewicht auf dem Pferderücken zu bleiben, den Körper zu stabilisieren und gleichzeitig geschmeidig den Bewegungen des Pferdes zu folgen. The Attitude It can be hard to tell immediately whether a horse will have the right temperament for Dressage or, indeed, any top level competition. A top Dressage horse doesn’t need to be docile or lazy – in fact, a bit of “spark” is often welcomed. What they do require is a willingness to work and a trainable attitude. If the horse is under saddle, you have an opportunity to determine how they respond to pressure and new situations; so you may ask for a new movement or similar and see how the horse reacts. With an unbacked horse, you can only go as far as seeing what they’ll do in the lunge ring or stable. Ian and I had the best time volunteering at the 2-day “Through the Levels with Debbie McDonald Clinic” at the Pima County Fairgrounds this past weekend. We are members of the @tucsondressageclub Board and this was its annual educational event. So much work & such fun. Debbie McDonald has competed as a rider at the #Olympics and many other international equestrian events. Soon, Debbie’s time will be spent coaching the US Olympic Dressage Team that will compete in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. She is down to earth, approachable, and kind, yet holds riders under her tutelage to a high standard. It was a pleasure and an honor to meet her. In our sport, we hear so much about the 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐧 that we sometimes, even at the upper levels, get lost. It’s all too easy to forget that 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘴, and the process of getting to that ideal connection with both reins starts with the inside aids. Gaining submission with the inside aids gives us influence over the hindquarters and enables our horses to relate correctly to the outside aids. To start, there are two basic requirements of the horse: 𝟏. He must follow the inside rein with the hindquarters. Otherwise, you basically can’t steer. 𝟐. He must yield to the inside aids. Otherwise, you can’t put his body up to the outside aids or influence the hindquarters.

In this video, Olivia helps a rider warm up on a young mare. In the trot, the rider needs to help show the horse how she can shift her weight back and add a little more airtime with her legs. Adding 10-meter circles helps balance the horse more on the outside. The horse needs to turn and hold herself up and not rely on the rider to hold her up. Link in bio!
Training Tip There are many advantages that gymnastic exercises with ground poles can offer. For many horses, it’s difficult to maintain an even tempo over a longer period of time. Working over poles is a way to both improve and check up on the horse’s rhythm. This work develops coordination, balance, and concentration for both horse and rider. At the same time, the rider develops a feel for the correct trot, active hindquarters, and lifted back. The rider learns to maintain a “positive tension” (also referred to as “tone” or “engagement”) in her body, even as she stays loose enough to follow the horse’s movement. Link in bio for more!
