Binance Executive, Gambaryan, Collapses In Court A dramatic scene unfolded at a Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday when Tigran Gambaryan, a detained executive of Binance, suddenly slumped in court due to alleged ill health. As the case was called by the #court registrar, Gambaryan failed to step forward to the dock from the back row seat where he was seated. #Justice Nwite then inquired about the whereabouts of the second defendant (Gambaryan), and one of the #lawyers in the defense team, who was sitting beside him, assisted him to the #dock. However, as they walked slowly to the dock, #Gambaryan fell down, and the lawyer helped him sit in the front row seat. Gambaryan’s lawyer, Mark Mordi, Senior Advocate of Nigeria ( #SAN), explained to the court that his client had been indisposed and that a written application letter had been filed to notify the court of his failing #health. He stated, “My lord, the case may not certainly proceed today.” Throughout the proceeding, Gambaryan rested on the arm of the seat where he was sitting, appearing visibly unwell. Recall that Justice Nwite had earlier dismissed Gambaryan’s bail application on May 16, citing that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( #EFCC) had established that the defendant, who is currently being remanded at #Kuje #CorrectionalCentre, would likely jump #bail if granted. Additionally, the alleged tax evasion charge filed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) against Binance Holdings Limited and Gambaryan could not proceed on Wednesday due to his absence in court. Former House of Representatives member, Israel Sunny-Goli, has dismissed allegations of planning a protest to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, seeking to compel it to commence a probe into the multi-million-naira investments made by the Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board, NCDMB, under Engr Simbi Kesiye Wabote. A group, Niger Delta Justice Forum (NDJF), had recently said it uncovered a plot being bankrolled by the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, using Sunny-Goli to rent a crowd to protest in Abuja, Port Harcourt and Yenagoa, against Wabote and former Minister of State (Petroleum), Chief Timipre Sylva, in the bid to stampede the EFCC to commence investigations into the allegations of misappropriation of funds by the NCDMB. Sunny-Goli, who represented Nembe/Brass Federal constituency in the 9th National Assembly, in a statement, accused NDJF of being bankrolled to publish falsehood in the attempt to divert the attention of the public from the petition which bordered on the misappropriation of public funds by the Simbi Wabote-led NCDMB. While dismissing allegations of being used by Lokpobiri, he maintained that his decision to submit a petition to the EFCC was borne out of personal conviction that public funds must be accounted for. Since the creation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2003, the commission has taken steps to fulfil its mandate of tackling economic crimes in Nigeria. While I commend their efforts in trying to remain relevant by a bunch of convictions amidst a mountain of disastrous legal defeats in court, it is glaring that the consistent resort of operatives of the commission to unprofessionalism is derailing it and increasingly making it clear to Nigerians that the commission may not be more than a tool of witch-hunt as it is no longer news that the commission has an infamous record of indulging in executive rascality, which often manifests in sheer bullying and intimidation of perceived opponents of the ruling government. A memorable reference point is the ordeal of former Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, wherein unruly agents of the commission were caught on camera removing the roof of the residence of the serving senator, all in a bid to effect his arrest. EFCC operatives take orders from ‘highest bidder’ in corruption cases, Oba of Benin told Oba of #Benin, Ewuare II, said he was told the Economic Financial Crimes Commission ( #EFCC) operatives take instructions from the highest bidders in corruption cases. The #monarch disclosed this while hosting Effa Okim, the new Benin zonal director of EFCC, in his palace in Benin on Monday. “No matter how much you try to support the EFCC from the #palace, It is very difficult because they seem to listen to other parties. What I have been told is that they take instructions from the highest bidder,” the monarch said. He added, “We get news from everywhere. We try to assist the EFCC. I even wrote a letter to the then-chairman who was removed from office.” The monarch expressed displeasure in the manner the anti-graft agency managed a case involving a palace official under former EFCC chair. “I even sent an emissary to talk to him regarding certain elements in Edo State, particularly the palace. How can EFCC operatives, especially the lady who handled the case I cited earlier, behave like that? If I was asked to comment on her performance, I would score her zero. I do not know if she was doing an EFCC job or just dancing to the tunes of people who were giving her money. “At the time we were trying to assist EFCC, the report we kept getting was negative, and I was not happy about it,” the monarch said. Mr Okim, however, urged the monarch to support the anti-graft agency in combating financial crimes in the state.
