🌳🌲PAINTING OF THE WEEK 🌳🌲 Esther Tyson is better known for her bird studies and a critical part of her artistic practice is to sit and observe the creatures she paints. This is one of her more abstract works. In her own words, Esther describes the process of making these paintings: "Sitting in the middle of a scrubby woodland exploring line. I spend time sitting, watching, mixing colour, absorbing the place I'm in before I begin. And then I do, begin. Today, I am struck by the lines that surround me, pigment lends itself, the water dries leaving the earth. The light is strong above and the shadow falls hard. Black ink lends itself perfectly. I am immersed." 👩🎨🧑🎨 MEET THE ARTIST 👩🎨🧑🎨 This is Esther Tyson and a selection of her work from The Forest. Esther Tyson is a painter and printmaker. She studied at Cumbria College of Art, the University of Wales and the Royal College of Art (RCA), London. She primarily works in oil and is a renowned wildlife artist. Observation is a major part of her practice - she photographs and films the birds before setting to work. Her work is deceptively simple - the birds seems to emerge from just a few deft brushstrokes. Esther has worked all over the world studying birds from South Wales to Slovakia, from the Seychelles to Senegal, with Phnom Penh, Turkey and Nepal in between. She currently lives and works in the South Peak District where she combines a studio and observational outdoor practice. I've been a bit quiet on here lately but there's lots going on in the background. One of the biggest things is that @SpeyBankStudio has a new exhibition starting in July! The Forest will showcase work by a range of artists in the Cairngorms, all with a distinctive take on the trees and woodlands that surround us. There's depictions of the beauty of light and shade through the trees, paintings of joyful trees, psychedelic landscapes and even woodlands that seems to reveal ethereal portals to another world. We're excited to reveal that we've got a guest artist in residence at the studio this month. @esthertyson is a renowned wildlife artist who has travelled the world with her work. A graduate of the University of Wales and the Royal College of Art, her work centres on observing creatures in their natural habitat. Birds figure prominently - from snow buntings to bullfinches to goldfinches. There is a beautiful simplicity to the brushstrokes that capture the birds in these paintings. Esther will be based at the studio during the whole of January and you can see and buy some of her fantastic work. We're now operating our winter hours and will be open on Thursdays 10am-2pm, and on Friday 10am-5pm. OPENING THIS WEEK / ART, SCIENCE AND THE NATURAL WORLD / 18 - 27 NOV Esther Tyson (b. 1973, Barrow in Furness, Cumbria) is a British painter and printmaker. Tyson studied at the University of Wales before being accepted into the Royal College of Art, London. Whilst at the Royal College of Art Esther won a travel scholarship to study large carnivores in Slovakia. It was this trip ignited a passion for travel, drawing, painting and observing creatures in their natural environment. Tyson’s drawings and paintings celebrate Britain’s birdlife: known and loved by many although many formerly common species are now in decline. She has travelled the world studying and drawing birds in their natural environments working alongside scientists in organisations such as Birdlife International and the British Trust for Ornithologists. This pencil and acrylic artwork is a composite of sketches made on the Bass Rock back in 2018, during the John Busby Seabird Drawing week. The week long drawing course was held about this time in June. What an experience the Bass Rock was, treading carefully along a path as gannets pecked at our ankles with rapier like beaks, the noise, the smell, and the land and sky filled with gannets, flashing brilliant white in the sun and almost pterodactyl in their movement. Brilliant tutors and great people on the course made this even more memorable. Esther Tyson spent the winter in the Cairngorms observing, among other sights and wildlife, the Snow Bunting as they foraged along the snow-ploughed roadside. Esther was due to exhibit with John Threlfall and Pascale Rentsch this April. Their joint exhibition is now rescheduled in 2021, but we will post more of these three artists' work over the next few weeks...stay tuned.

I was an honoree and the Keynote Speaker at the launch of the Atlanta Ardenne Alumni Chapter and Ardenne Reunion. The event saw Ardenne past students largely from the decade of the 1980's coming together from London, Toronto, Jamaica and various states in the USA joining with the Ardenne past students in Atlanta to launch the Atlanta Ardenne Alumni Chapter. I spoke to the past students about the process that Ardenne High School went through in the first decade of the 21st Century to move it from being a school of second choice to one of the most sought-after high schools in Jamaica. I also highlighted some of the outcomes of this process, including our national acclaim academically, in the performing arts and particularly in Science. I challenged my fellow alumni to protect our traditions: understanding who we are as Ardennites committed to operating with humility, yet pride in who we are, with excellence in every sphere of our lives, with graduating students who will give back and build society, of students who are spiritually centered and focussed and of students who understand our identity as Ardennites. We are like no other school in Jamaica. We are unique, we are special! In this picture Esther was the guest speaker at the appreciation ceremony for Retirees at Shortwood Teachers' College. She encouraged the Retirees to do the 5Rs: Reflect, Reassess, Re-energize, Retool and Relax. Most importantly, they should give themselves spiritual retreats where they reflect, connect with God and restore their souls. Last week I addressed the graduates of The Abilities Foundation at their Graduation and Awards Ceremony. I was able to use the story of my husband to encourage them. Rawle, who is paralyzed from gunshots and who later suffered a massive stroke, has fought to live a fulfilled life in spite of his disabilities. I told them that the spirit of the overcome that I see in my husband is what I have witnessed among them. Last week I was the Guest Speaker at the Graduation and Awards Ceremony of Quality Academics. I shared with them a Tweet from Heather Thompson who said that she defended her dissertation one year before. The same girl who had been expelled at Grade 8. She said that eventually your worst moments come down to 2 words: "But then" But then I moved on But then I tried again But then I finished my PhD. I also shared with them 3 sets of two words that I wanted them to internalize and use to drive their thinking so they too, like Heather will say, "But then".
