The number of Australian wood ducks using our orchard dam has jumped noticeably the last month. We had a resident family of 8 through spring and summer but now regularly have 30+ as a few smaller dams in the area have dried up. They’re doing a good job keeping bugs down in the patch and enjoy a few broccoli leaves in return. #farmwildlife #biodiversity

' Vole View ' As promised, I'm going to spend more time photographing the fantastic wildlife on the farm. This incredibly cute little character is a Bank Vole. Bank voles and field voles don't hibernate so you can spot them all year round. Voles produce three to four litters of between three and five young per year, making them perfect food for birds of prey. Our killdeer pair has a clutch of 4 eggs. They've moved their nesting area to the blackberry rows. This is a better area since it gets less traffic than the flower rows. After a morning watching Mr Red Kite I have a new respect for them. They are often spoken of as lazy scavengers but this morning he put in a big shift for the Mrs… hunting over the Barn field he made 3 separate kills and went up to feed her through the morning. Amazing to watch his dexterity threading those huge wings through the trees to the nest. Confined to my rest spot I cannot get close to the tree to get a clear shot of the female but hidden away up there I realise she is always watching me watching her! Morning! Well it’s been 7 weeks since I posted anything on social media. February passed by without taking any pictures and March is looking like it’ll be the same. FIELDFARES 🪶 || It will be time to say goodbye to these lovely birds soon… as they head off on their spring migration. We often see them round the farm enjoying left over autumn crab apples and fallen fruit over the winter. Fieldfares are migratory, spending the winter in the UK before flying back to Scandinavia to breed in spring. While on our shores, their diet features large amounts of berries and fallen fruit. Hawthorn, holly, juniper and yew are among the trees that provide an important food source for these birds. In summer, the fieldfare’s diet switches towards insects and invertebrates. On Castle Farm we welcome wildlife across our fields, rivers, footpaths and woodland. Our organic wildflower meadows, wild bird covers and diverse herbal leys are home to lots of interesting species. A nightime bird survey recently revealed 15 visiting woodcock feeding in just one field. It must be full of bugs and worms in the soil to attract that many, all probing away. Growing up on the farm, we never saw bald eagles in the area. Ever. Now they are a regular occurrence as they live in the area, but it still gets us excited to spot them. This morning was a first though as a juvenile bald eagle decided to land atop our tallest silo. I’ve never seen the pigeons that regularly hang out there scatter so fast. Another breakfast with Barney… Such a treat watching him hunt over the rough grass but boy it’s hard work for him! So much landing, listening, swooping, incredible flying manoeuvres all for a mouse! We’re getting used to his route and his mannerisms - eg he sometimes makes like a flamingo and stands one legged on his fave fence post. Occasionally he eyeballs me as if to say “oi stop making so much noise am trying to get my brekkie here”. Don’t suppose he’ll ever allow me to get close enough to get a really clear shot but hey respect! Nothing but nothing in any gardening I have done to date will ever match the joy of seeing a Barn Owl perched on one of the young trees we planted here at the Barn or hunting over our scruffy wildflower meadow and rough grass margins. The female may be gone but we have a second owl - perhaps her partner? still appearing every morning, flying hard. On Barn Owls… sound on For the past 4 mornings we have been blessed with sightings of Barn Owls hunting over the rough grass by the house. Dark mornings bring the rare treat of seeing the Barn Owl hunt over the rough grass areas round the house. After an hour of relentless hunting it finally made a kill and hunkered down in the grass with it before being dive bombed by the red kite. The owl won out and the kite had to retreat, hungry, to its nighttime roost. 🚜 How to make a forest farm! 🐄 Agroforestry - bringing trees and hedges into farming systems - has huge benefits for wildlife and sustainable agriculture, but it's still a rare practice across the UK. 🚜 It's been month since we hosted The #AgroforestryShow with the @soilassociation, and we're still on a mission to make agroforestry mainstream! Here are some common types of agroforestry that can be used to boost biodiversity and support #NatureFriendlyFarming: 🌳 Silvopasture - trees in livestock fields provide shade on hot days, reducing heat stress. They also store carbon and provide a home for many plants and animals. 🌳 Shelterbelts - can protect crops and livestock from extreme weather, supporting food production. 🌳 Alley cropping - rows of trees in fields can support pollinators for crops, reduce flooding and soil erosion and provide an additional crop of fruits, nuts or wood products. 🌳 Woodland corridors - linking up existing woodlands by planting trees creates new pathways for wildlife on the move 🌳 River woodland - protects rivers from fertiliser run-off and stabilises river banks, reducing flood risk and soil erosion. 🌳 Caring for old trees - many of the UK's ancient and veteran trees are on farms. Past few days these young doves keep popping up almost under my feet. They seem to have little fear. Like two young teenagers in the city for the first time. We don’t mow our fields and let the sheep, goats and horses do it. We have the shaggiest fields on our road but tones of crickets. Forestry works almost complete on an estate in East Anglia.
