Felt inspired to share after a cool conversation with @darrenachtzehn this morning about old photos and the lives that our loved ones lived before us ❤️⬇️ These images are of the late + great John V. Graziano, my paternal grandfather. Grandpap was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, and was stationed in Paris where he served as an embalmer for U.S. servicemen and their families who passed away in Europe. His daughter & my lovely aunt @lynncook9386 found and shared with me an envelope of film negatives from his time there. They were beginning to deteriorate at the corners. I set out on a mission to learn how to camera scan the images in hopes of glimpsing a piece of my grandfather’s history that I would’ve otherwise never gotten to see (Photo 2 shows part of the process). When I scanned the first image, I actually burst into tears. With the exception of my grandparents’ wedding photo, I had never seen a photo of him younger than myself. It was a bit surreal. No longer was I looking at my Grandpap John - I was viewing still moments in the life of a young man called “Johnny,” who had his full life ahead of him. We often forget that our parents and grandparents were once where we’ve found ourselves in adolescence and young adulthood - they had dreams and plans and hopes for what their future would hold. They, too, were living this life for the very first time - making mistakes and having experiences - and maybe taking it for granted because they were young and had their whole lives to think and reflect and grow. Maybe we - our families - were the dream for them. Or maybe there were many lost dreams along the way that they hope to see us fulfill someday. Have you ever thought to ask your elders “what did you want from this life when you were my age?” 💭 Take the time to sit and ask questions. Listen to the stories. What I wouldn’t give to hear my grandfather share his memories with us at the Sunday dinner table, over a heaping plate of spaghetti with a gin & tonic in hand, just one more time. ❤️ #FilmFriday #FilmNegatives #StoryTime

The Flanagan house was converted into the Greenville Art Center, and the inaugural art exhibition, comprised of Old Master paintings loaned from various New York galleries, opened in May 1960. In 1963, the Rachel Maxwell Moore Art Foundation was established, and before Moore died in 1964, she bequeathed $24,000 to the foundation for the sole purpose of purchasing works of art for the Museum’s permanent collection. Her foundation continues its strong support today, purchasing one to three seminal artworks each year for the GMoA. In 1981, the name of the Greenville Art Center was changed to the Greenville Museum of Art to reflect its status as an institution with a growing permanent collection of art objects. When I graduated from middle school I was already interested in photography. I had a point and shoot film camera and spent all my money on film and developing. My parents bought me a SLR camera and a decent lens. And I spent my time learning how to shoot. Back then you had to keep a notebook of every shot you took so when they came back you could see what you did right and more often than not wrong. And the best way to learn was to use black and white film. Once I had gotten through the exposure triangle I learned some darkroom techniques and started developing and printing. Was going through some old negatives and came across some gems from my film era. I don’t miss the anxiety of taking film pictures but I do miss the art and science for darkroom printing. I also still find myself drawn to black and white images The simplicity. The contrast and light with no distraction from color. #printthepictures #filmphotography #filmnegatives

I had a pile of negatives from decades of pictures, many in the 50s and 60s. At one point I thought about just tossing them, sure that we had all the corresponding prints. But I didn't, and it would pay off, because in 2017 I pulled them out in a frenzy of searching and inspected each one. There were many I did have prints for and recognized, but just as many that I didn't. This was one of them. 1960, Evelyn (my grandma) standing by the clothesline full of clothes to be dried and taken inside. This photo was the one i had in mind when I considered the cover for the book and settled on the name, The Record Keeper. To me, it is one of the most powerful images I have of my grandmother. Here is a photograph of a section of film that I worked on. Using a craft knife I began scratching off a small section on one image. After working out how much pressure to use, I worked my way along a few more images. Scratching away a little more each time, careful to not remove the main character image until the end..
